Tim Duncan - Kevin Kernan
Here he was, seven feet tall and on top of the basketball world. With all eyes on him, Tim Duncan decided to look back. At 23, he knew this was the time of his young life and he wanted to enjoy it in his own way.
In a few moments the MVP Trophy would soon be in Tim’s large hands. He had carried the San Antonio Spurs to a five-game victory over the New York Knicks in the 1999 NBA Finals and now it was Tim’s turn to carry a video camera. He wanted to record his own story. He was filming the Spurs’ celebration on the most famous basketball court in the world, Madison Square Garden in the heart of New York City and he did not want to miss any of the action.
What people don’t know about Tim is that he’s a seven-foot kid,
explains his best friend on the Spurs, guard Antonio Daniels.
This kid had taken the place of Michael Jordan, who had won six Finals MVP trophies. It took Jordan seven years to win his first championship. Tim won his in only his second season. Winning the MVP award in The Finals, means the world to me,
Tim said. That is because his Spurs became champions.
Just making records for myself, just keeping it on tape,
Duncan said of his camcorder approach. There’s no guarantee I’ll ever get back.
He’ll be back. You can be sure of that.
In many ways Tim is the best example of the new athletic hero, soft-spoken, bright and team-oriented player. He enjoys the game. He works hard to improve but never lets the weight of the world wear him down. He doesn’t take himself or life too seriously. He has a tattoo of Merlin the Magician on his chest and a joker on the back of his right shoulder. Born and raised on St. Croix of the Virgin Islands, he has a relaxed attitude.
Says San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich, Tim’s not an MTV player. He’s a basketball player. He’s an old-school, work hard, fundamentally sound basketball player.
Tim Duncan is not MTV; he’s MVP. After so much look at me
in the world of sports, the games are going back to the glory of we.
In baseball there is the smashing success of Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and
