Paul Thompson’s smartphone beeped. A text message had come in. Even though the phone was right next to him, Paul didn’t notice the sound. But his new kitten did. The curious kitten reached out his big white paw and patted the screen. Paul looked up from his work and spotted the new text. He couldn’t help but smile. This new kitten was going to be a big help!

When he was very young, Paul got sick with German measles and whooping cough at the same time. After that, he began to lose his hearing. By the time he was six, one ear was completely deaf, and he had only a little hearing in the other. He wore a hearing aid and got good at lip reading. A speech teacher taught him how to speak clearly.

When he was just 11 years old, growing up in East London, South Africa, he met a boy his own age down on the docks in the harbor. The boy had been sailing on a yacht with his family and was just passing through. But he and Paul quickly became friends. They talked about the thrill of sailing across the vast blue ocean.
