Introduction
Every nine seconds in the United States, a woman is assaulted or beaten. Every day in the United States, three women are killed by their husbands or boyfriends. Domestic violence was a real part of my life that I survived with the grace of God. Everyone doesn’t make it out. I hope that my story inspires you, especially if you’re living in an abusive situation. Please get help - no one deserves to live in fear the way that I did. If you are not safe in your own home, please reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or on their website, https://www.thehotline.org.
Chapter 1: How we met
A girl’s first love should be from the man who loves her unconditionally: he should show her what true love is by guiding and directing her, and making her feel that she is the apple of his eye. Her first love should be her father!
I never had a good relationship with my father, and because of that I now see that I was seeking validation from the wrong men. I never believed that I was enough - I always had to do more, be more. This way of thinking was dangerous, and led me to a man that caused me so much harm.
On October 26, 2011, I met a man that I thought was sent from God. This man was so charming...he swept me off my feet. Little did I know at the time how my life would change forever. You know the saying, Be careful about what you pray for?
I got that and then some.
I met Nabel, for this is what I will call him, anticipating and believing that he was the man that I had been praying for, the man that would love me the way that God expects for a man to love a woman. My prayer was Lord send me a man that loves You, and with his love for You, I know that he would love me.
He professed that he loved me, but all love is not good love. His love consisted of control and fear. There were some good days, but when the days were dark, they were dark and ugly! That is how my story begins.
Whenever I pass by a Love’s Truck Stop, it always reminds me that this is where I first met the man of my dreams, or so I thought. He was charming, had the looks and I believed I really connected with him. It all started over coffee and conversation. Nabel was a truck driver and delivered cars, and was going back home to Seaford, Delaware. We exchanged phone numbers and he went on his way.
I was so impressed by him, that I called him the same night, instead of in the two-day timeframe that I had told him that I would call. He answered after two rings.
Is this Tina?
Yes,
I answered, somewhat surprised.
So, is this confirmation?
He asked.
Confirmation?
I didn’t understand what he meant.
Yes; confirmation that you are the one that I have been praying for.
Yes, I was praying as well.
I was surprised that I exposed that vulnerability. It just slipped out.
As we communicated over the months, we decided that he would come to visit me for Christmas. I was so excited to introduce him to two of my sons. Christmas was amazing. I just knew that this was the man that I had prayed for, and God had finally allowed our paths to cross. He treated me like a queen: there was nothing that I couldn’t have.
After returning home to Delaware, Nabel was released from his job in January. We looked at the job opportunities here in Houston, and concluded that he would be moving in with me. Looking back, what a big mistake. Talk about moving too fast! When the feeling is right
, one tends to ignore the red flags that were flying. They were flying all over the place. Shortly before he moved in, I went on a business trip to Las Vegas in January. He called my phone repeatedly and I did not answer. When I finally called him back, I could tell immediately that there was a problem. He became very irate and accused me of being with someone. I didn’t talk to him for over a week. When I finally spoke with him, he acted like nothing had happened. I asked him how the job search was going, he stated that he applied for a car hauler position and would be coming to Houston for an interview.
In February, he moved from Seaford to Houston, Texas. The interview went so well that he was offered the job on the spot. The job consisted of him hauling cars from Houston to the east coast and back. After a couple of trips on the road, Nabel asked his employer if I could ride with him. I was so excited when he told me that I could that nothing else mattered, I just wanted to be with him. Nabel had some health issues that he was dealing with.
