    Chapter 1

    Cora?

You’re taken aback by his forwardness, but you still freeze in anticipation, squeezing your fingers around each other. The times you’ve rebooted, he didn’t utter a single thing that made you think he knew you before you lost your memory. Could he have been right in the last reboot, saying it was a glitch? Does he remember any part of it? Or is it simply because you’re here, wearing his jacket, with Karika?

Good. So you know who this girl is, Karika says, her tone flat and a bit rigid. When did she get so callous toward you? Maybe it’s just because of the way you met her this time. She lost all her memories and was kidnapped or something and found a note with this address, so she came here.

Karika studies you for a moment more, Oliver’s face turning bright red as he tries to process everything she’d just said.

She purses her lips, eyes narrowing in your direction. Are you sure this is the first time this has happened?

Oliver’s expression tells her she’s crazy, but he says nothing as he steps into the kitchen, eyes filled with caution. He wears a white shirt, the fabric stretching to fit his built frame, and jeans, his earbuds threaded under the shirt and hanging out over the collar.

What are you doing here? Oliver asks quietly, forcing you to ignore Karika’s question.

He shakes his head, furrowing his brow. Your brain spins as you try to think of something to say, your attention catching on the scab at his temple. You’re not supposed to know any of these people and you can’t tell him that you’ve been rebooting… Can you even tell him anything?

Don’t say anything to Karika or Peter. Oliver’s words echo in your mind as you struggle to speak, looking into his eyes. I might be the only person you can actually trust.

He takes in a short, sudden breath and gently grabs your wrist, pulling you to the door. You don’t protest, but Karika does.

Where are you going? she calls. We have five minutes until the meeting.

Your nerves spike. Five minutes? That means…

Oliver nearly crashes into someone as he rounds the corner to go around the front of the store and to the parking lot. Your eyes dart away from the man standing before the two of you immediately, your pulse kicking into overdrive.

    Bad timing.

Not watching where you’re going is—

Peter stops himself short as Oliver keeps walking past, his dark blue eyes catching on yours. Something in his mind clicks and he reaches out to you, grabbing your hand, Oliver’s momentum yanking you in the opposite direction for a moment before he realizes you’ve stopped. Peter searches your face, completely distracted by it.

Your cheeks heat as Oliver turns around and lets you go, moving to stand between you and Peter. You shudder as the freezing air hits your face, remembering that it had been like this once before, when you stayed the night at Oliver’s house.

Peter had left you at the café and Chris swooped in, taking you to Oliver’s, throwing a fit, then leaving, and you stayed overnight. That next morning, Oliver had reacted protectively over you as Peter stormed into his home.

    You bite your lip.

Back off, Oliver says quietly, his face calm and stony.

Peter’s face twists with a twinge of anger. Move, Ginger.

What do you want? Oliver asks, placing an arm out to keep you behind him. Go inside before Chris comes and I have to answer more questions.

No, I don’t think I will, Peter says, his tone sharp as he looks peers Oliver’s shoulder at you. In his dark blue irises, you notice pain, and it begins to weigh on your heart. Does he…?

Why does it hurt when I see you?

Peter’s voice is almost whisper, as if he’s talking to himself, but you’re able to make out his words. Turning away, you press a hand to your aching chest.

Do you know her? Oliver asks.

Peter’s brows pull together in confusion as he stands upright, not taking his eyes off you. I believe I do. Cora, is it?

You make a sharp inhalation at your name and you nod curtly, not sure how to move on from this.

Why do I know that? Peter whispers to himself. Uncertainty follows him as he retreats, stealing one last glance before disappearing around the corner. You can’t breathe and it’s so… so cold. Colder than last time, it seems.

After a moment’s hesitation, Oliver grabs your wrist again and pulls you gently to his Mustang.

Get in, he says. Without a second thought, you obey, and he turns the car on and backs out.

You’re taking me to a path in the forest, you mumble aloud, your mind numb and your gut unsure of where you need to go from here. You’re going to shoot me.

You see him grit his teeth, but his face returns to being hard and void of emotions again.

Why would you say that? he asks, the roughness in his voice proving you right.

Because you’re worried I’m a spy or something, you mumble, your brain still frozen solid. Loose lips are probably the only option. I came to find you because I remember you. You’re all I remember. It’s taken a few days, but that’s it.

How do you have my jacket? he asks suddenly, his face giving away no emotion. I was just wearing it yesterday.

Yesterday isn’t really a word in my vocabulary today, you respond. Your heart begins to throb as you try to work out how to tell him about the reboots. You haven’t seen a butterfly yet, so maybe he really wasn’t going to take you somewhere to kill you. Or if he was, this was going to be the last time.

    You swallow nervously.

You aren’t going to believe a word I say, and that’s okay, because I didn’t believe it at first, either. You sigh, rubbing your hands on your pants to wipe away the sweat. This morning has happened four times. I’d live for a few days, die, and then it would start all over again. The same thing happened to Karika a year ago and that’s why she’s so much different than how you, Chris, and Peter remember her.

    Shaky breath in.

    Out.

"In the last reboot, you told me to find you and only tell you about this because you thought I couldn’t trust Karika or Peter. Or even Chris, but Chris didn’t wasn’t aware of this because he wasn’t present for the conversation. He didn’t have a car so he couldn’t go to Peter’s with
