    Chapter 1

The gears lifting the stone doors squeal, Karika pulling a knife from her pocket. She flicks it open, her eyes glinting with craze as she reminds her goons not to shoot aimlessly or they’ll hit her.

The guys glance back at you, the moment feeling like an eternity.

Your eyes flick to Peter, the glow of his tablet contorting his face. He can see the way out of here. He’ll be able to get you out. Maybe you can help him get everyone else out, too.

Peter meets your eyes and nods, touching the earpiece in his ear and striding over to you as the guys turn away and disperse. Grimacing, Chris heads up the half-ladder in the trapdoor, Oliver and Ronnie converging next to you and Peter.

Sorry, you guys, Karika smiles. She twirls the knife in her hand, the wound in your stomach throbbing at the sight of it. But none of you are getting out of here alive.

Peter ducks under the door and you follow, Oliver slipping through right after.

Hey! Oliver shouts back at Ronnie as he watches his partner grip his gun tighter, glowering at Karika.

Oliver grabs Ronnie’s wrist and yanks him through the door just as bullets whiz past you.

    Gah!

Oliver drops to the ground, clutching his leg.

He’s only down for a moment; he’s back up and running with the rest of you before you can react.

We have to split up, Peter says as he folds the tablet in half and slips it into one of his pockets, zipping it shut so the device won’t fall out.

We need to get her and Chris alone again if we can, Oliver reminds you guys through gritted teeth as the bullet wound in his leg slows him down.

Or we can just drop her into a casket, Ronnie snaps, turning around to walk backwards. He lifts and cocks his gun, squeezing the trigger.

Gore explodes at the other end of the hallway.

Your heart palpitates in your chest and your stomach wrenches.

The four of you duck into a hallway, Peter turning to Ronnie and talking fast.

Your tracker is still on her. She’s wearing that earring you got her for her birthday.

Ronnie nods, his back pressed against the dirt wall as he peers around the corner. Good. There’s a lot of them coming down the hall, so we have to make this quick.

If any of us disappear, keep moving. We’re either dead or trapped. If we’re trapped, we’ll find a way to contact each other, eventually. If we’re dead… Oliver’s eyes catch on yours as your heart squeezes. Then don’t forget us.

You open your mouth to respond, when Ronnie presses back, holding his gun low at his side.

    We have to move. Now.

Peter’s eyes are on you, fear in your heart.

    Keep up, he breathes.

You nod and swallow hard. Your shoulder hurts. Your stomach’s on fire. You’re queasy.

    But you can keep going.

Please don’t die, you tell Oliver and Ronnie, whose jaws clench as they share a look with you and then each other.

    They nod.

Peter grabs your wrist and pulls you deeper into the tunnels as Ronnie steps out into the open and gunshots fill the air. Oliver follows close behind you guys for a while before peeling off.

Peter pulls you to the left just as a horde of Karika’s goons pass by, chasing after Oliver at the other end of the hall.

Don’t worry about them, Peter exhales as he pulls the folded tablet out of his pocket. They do this for a living. Karika’s guys won’t catch them; they’re too slippery.

You turn to peek over your shoulder as six colored dots move rapidly across Peter’s screen.

    He touches his earpiece.

Oliver, you’re headed for a dead end. Find a way out of there.

I got him, Ronnie chimes in, his voice staticky over your earpiece.

Pops rapidly explode in your ears.

Thanks, you hear Oliver say just before Peter opens his mouth again.

Chris, you need to move faster. Karika’s going the same direction as you and she’ll be on your heels in no time.

Good thing I’m on the level above her, Chris mutters.

Yeah, well, you’re going to run out of floor soon, Peter comments, pulling you right as he tucks the tablet back into his pocket.

"Chris smash, you hear Ronnie comment with a laugh. Avengers, assemble!"

Peter rolls his eyes and reaches across you to touch your earpiece, pressing the button to turn it off.

Cora’s going dark, he says aloud.

Hey, you comment quietly as the two of you briskly take another turn.

He smirks. You don’t want to hear all this.

Voices at the end of the hallway. Peter holds his arm out, stopping you as your heart pounds in your throat.

This way, he whispers, grabbing your hand and bringing you into a darker section of the tunnels, an open archway to your left. He pulls you in as the voices grow closer. Going dark.

He reaches up and switches off his earpiece.

The room is filled with discarded tables and boxes, like it’s being used as a storage room.

Peter pulls you over to the furthest part of the room and the two of you duck behind the tallest stack of boxes.

A pair of goons walks by the archway, a guy and a girl. Their conversation carries through the boxes and you make a face. They’re flirting?

Peter lifts a finger to his lips, telling you to stay quiet.

You think they would have come this far? the girl asks, her voice sounding like she smokes twenty cigarettes a day.

Probably not, the guy says, his tone slow and low as they come into the room. If they did, this would make them pretty uncomfortable.

    Are they… kissing?

You cover your mouth, the absurdity of the situation making you want to laugh. Peter rolls his eyes as a corner of his mouth quirks.

You make a face as one of the tables scoots across the floor.

‘I think we should go,’ you mouth to Peter.

He makes a pained face and nods.

He cocks his gun and stands up, the couple springing from their positions and lifting their own weapons. Peter’s eyes are icy as he stares them down, his left hand pulling a second gun from his holster.

He holds it out to you.

Oliver taught you to shoot, right? he asks.

You nod, swallowing hard as you take the gun in your palm, the weapon cold against your skin.

Drawing a deep breath in, you nod, cocking your own and lifting it to aim at the girl. Yeah.

Good, Peter says. Because you might have to use it.

The guy reaches into his pocket and reveals a flip phone. He opens it when Peter makes a sound.

Don’t even think about it. His voice is hard as he smiles cruelly. I’m Karika’s favorite.

The guy grimaces as he presses a button and begins lifting the phone to his ear.

Peter’s countenance doesn’t change as he shifts and pulls the trigger, the phone falling to the ground as the guy cries out, blood from his hand dribbling to the floor. For a split second, it brings you back to the moment Oliver lifted that gun to your head and Peter saved you at the last second.

The girl aims her weapon at Peter, its bang reverberating through the room as Peter moves slightly, the girl cursing him as she misses. Peter’s bullet finds its mark and rips through her arm as the guy recovers and turns to Peter. Anger flares in his dark irises as he readjusts his hand around his gun.

You take a deep breath in and let it out, squeezing the trigger.

You watch the guy jerk back, your bullet burying deep within his hip. He doubles over as Peter hits the girl in the foot and the calf, walking forward.

Cora, go into the hallway, he instructs you as the
