I always dedicate my books to my family, yet this time, Sandra Pesmen, a friend from Chicago brought her intelligence and smarts to aid her pal from High School. She’s been with me by email all the way through so thanks, Sandy, thanks a bunch always.

    Chapter 1

CASSIDY RAE SANG AS she drove the last mile to her favorite and only Grans in the world. Don’t stop thinkin’ about tomorrow, yesterday’s gone, yeah, yesterday’s gone. What a great song, she thought as she pulled into the long driveway with an American flag waving in the spring breeze the way Grans always welcomed her. And she doesn’t even know I’m here! She laughed to herself, grabbed her duffel bag, closed the worn Pontiac door and hurried up the steps. The door flew open at her touch.

She called, Granny, I’m here. No response. She sniffed the aroma, followed it to the kitchen to lift the covered pot of cooking potato soup. Oh yeah and hooray! Barking at the back door came from Tommy, the big white and brown pit bull. Hey Tommy, what’s the problem? He ran back and forth as if to beckon her. C.R. raced through the path toward the woods where she saw a bent foot, heard a familiar cry from the one she loved best.

    Chapter 2

C.R held back tears to see Grans with her beautiful blue eyes closed, lying in a heap surrounded by branches of the old Oak tree. She reached out to pat her the way Grans always did when she was little. Grans, she whispered. Grans, it’s me. I’m gonna take care of you right now. What happened?

Cassie Rae? Oh, my baby girl you’re here. I need an apple for a pie. Marcus likes pie for dinner. She sniffled. I dropped the apple when I tripped over a damn rock.

Dialing 911 fast from her new phone, C.R. said, Hurry. My Granny fell. It’s the old house off the main road. Watch for the flag.

Hey, Cassie Rae. Everyone loves Ms. Brown. Hang tough. We’ll be right there.

Grans lay still, eyes shut tight, but this time goose bumps covered her bent legs. C.R.pulled off the too large college sweatshirt and covered Grans slender shape. Don’t die, precious Grans. I won’t let anything happen to you.

    Chapter 3

The wail of an ambulance came close. In a frenzy, C.R. waved for attention. Two men jumped from the vehicle, stretcher in hand with equipment to examine the woman on the ground. Sam O’Connell, a man C.R. knew since childhood hurried over. My Grans fell.

I’ll take good care, my dear. He bent down to examine the elderly woman who appeared to be so frail. Cassie Rae looked, blinked her eyes to see a friend from high school so long ago. Charlie. She held out her hand. He stared at the pretty girl he once loved way back in time.

Hey, Cassidy Rae. I work with my Dad. We’re an EMT team. Sorry Grans fell. We’ll have to get her to the hospital, for sure. Follow us. She shook her head. Hell no, Charlie. I’ll lock up Tommy, turn off the range and ride with you. She ran toward the house after kissing her dearest Granny. I’ll be with you in a minute.

What do you think, Dad? To me, it looks serious. Maybe she had a stroke and fell fracturing her ankle.

His dad frowned, a mop of gray hair blew back in the wind; It’s to be decided when the doc in Emergency takes a look. Hey, the father looked up at his son, as I recall, you were nuts for this special girl. Her mom died in Afghanistan and she lived with her grandmother until she left for Veterinarian School. We must keep Ms. Brown in good shape, Charlie, because C.R. needs her and so does the whole town. As they carried the stretcher to the waiting ambulance, a loud shriek pierced the air. Birds flapped their wings close by and seemed to caw.

Pops, that sound came from this delicate woman.

Son, she always made herself known. They hurried to lift Ms. Brown into the ambulance. On their heels ran Cassidy Rae to settle in the ambulance and murmur sweet words to her Grans, faded blue eyes remained closed.

    Chapter 4

Emergency doors opened to the sound of the ambulance. A team of interns hurried out to aid the EMT’s on duty. Hurry, Sam O’Connell called. Ms. Brown is hurt. Get the best doctor in emergency right quick. The hall buzzed with activity as on call young Sam Burns hurried to see what happened. He recognized Sam, everyone’s favorite EMT. Speak to me, Sam.

Grans, eyes still closed, whimpered obviously in pain. She’s my Grandmother. I don’t know you, but you better take good care of her and fast. Cassidy
