Tides of Mars (Omnibus Version) - Ben Winston

    Ascension – Book I

Ariel Janis was a normal college girl until she attended the reading of a will. She inherited much more than she bargained for as she discovers more and more about her new estate. Not only is she now one of the richest women in the United States, she learns she has inherited the legacy of being a Guardian to a Galactic Empire she’s never heard of. Just as she thinks she gets a handle on that, she gets a visit from a very important, very special guest from way out of town.

    Chapter One

Ariel Janis sat in stunned silence. Three days before, she’d received a letter from a lawyer named Alexis Moran. In the letter, Ms. Moran requested that Ariel attend the reading of the last will and testament of Dame Estelle Parker. Dame Parker was one of the richest women in the country, and as far as Ariel knew, outside of CNN, she had never heard of her before.

Ariel had been adopted as a baby by her parents Luke and Karen Janis. With the help of her adopted parents, Ariel had searched for her birth parents and found their graves. She had been the only survivor of a car accident that had ended their lives. Social services did search for any relatives to take charge of the infant, but none had been found. She was adopted by the Janis’ six months later.

After graduating high school, Ariel chose to go to UNLV. Unknown to the girl, Dame Parker had lived in Las Vegas. If Ariel had heard correctly, Dame Estelle Parker just bequeathed her entire estate to a girl she had never met. Ariel didn’t even know what the title ‘Dame’ stood for, but everyone called her that, so Ariel did as well.

Ms. Moran, please don’t think I’m not grateful, but I’ve never met Dame Parker. I didn’t even know who she was until I received your letter the other day. How could she leave me what sounds like an incredible estate?

Miss Janis... The lawyer sighed and set most of the paperwork off to one side. Please, call me Alex; Dame Estelle did. May I call you Ariel? When the girl nodded, Alex continued. There is so much you don’t know, and I promised Dame Estelle I wouldn’t tell you. May I ask if there is anything else you have planned for the day?

Not really; we’re on summer break at the school, but I was taking some summer courses. I have a bit of homework from that, but nothing else. Why?

I would like to take you out to your new house and show you around. There are a few things you should see, and perhaps more questions that I can answer for you, Alex said. And some people you need to meet.

Ariel agreed, but almost laughed when Alex called ‘for a car.' Alex, I have a car downstairs. I could give you a ride to where we need to go.

Alex smiled. Ariel, the car I called for is your limo. Trust me here, at least this time, let’s take the limo. It’ll make talking easier and won’t run the risk of us crashing when you get surprised.

How much more surprise can you hit me with? You already told me how much money I now have.

Well, better to not risk it, Alex said.

Um, do you think we can pick up a sandwich or something? I’m getting kinda hungry, Ariel admitted.

I can order anything you wish, and we can pick it up, Alex said reaching for the telephone again.

Actually, I was thinking of a turkey club from Subway. I don’t think you can order that over the phone, Ariel said smiling.

Are you set on Subway, or can I surprise you with one from my favorite deli? Alex asked.

That would be fine; remember college kid... Subway is cheap?

I can remember, except we didn’t have a Subway when I went to school. Burger King or McDonald’s were our only choices, Alex chuckled and ordered the sandwiches.

Ariel liked this woman lawyer. She didn’t actually know anything about lawyers, but if Dame Parker trusted her, Ariel thought she could too. Alex, did you manage all of Dame Parker’s business affairs?

Her personal affairs, yes. She had a team of lawyers for the corporate stuff. I did help her oversee them, but she actually had a pretty good set-up, Alex replied as the two women walked to the elevators.

Ariel wished she could talk to her parents, but knew her dad would only congratulate her, and tell her she had to handle it on her own. Her parents would make sure no one thought they were taking advantage of her good fortune.

Alex, I’m way out of my league here. I don’t know the first thing about being rich, or investing or any of this. I would like you to stay on and help me. I don’t want to change anything yet. I’m afraid I’ll be asking a lot of questions along the way, but that’s the only way I can think of to learn,

I’d be honored to help you, Ariel, and thank you for asking. I really did like Dame Parker. She was a good friend, Alex said. Ariel thought she heard something else in her voice, but chose to ignore it.

When the two women got to the front of the office building, there was a long black limo waiting for them. A beautiful, blonde goddess in black slacks, vest and wearing a chauffeur’s cap was holding the door open for them.

Tara, this is Ariel Janis. Ariel, this is Tara Coleman, your chauffeur, Alex said introducing the two women.

Ariel shook the woman’s hand and asked her if she was hungry.

Yes Ma’am, but I was going to wait until we got back to the mansion, Tara replied.

Alex, since we’re stopping by the Deli anyway, can we get her a sandwich too? Ariel asked.

Alex grinned, Sure! What would you like from Walter’s, dear?

Oh, Ms. Moran, Ms. Janis, I couldn’t! Tara said.

Ariel smiled. Tara, who’s your boss?

    You are, Miss.

So, what would you like for lunch?

Tara finally smiled and told Alex what she wanted, Alex climbed in the back. Tara, once we pick up the sandwiches, I want you to find a place to pull over, so you can join us for lunch, Ariel said and climbed in after Alex before Tara could protest.

    ––––––––

So, what was Dame Parker like? Ariel asked.

She was pretty, like you are. From what I’ve seen so far, you are a lot like her. She didn’t believe in class separation either. Inviting Tara to lunch with us is very much something Dame Estelle would have done. She had a kind and caring heart. However if someone she knew was hurt, she was right there, ready to fix the problem. She was very protective of her friends and her privacy. I think I was her closest friend, and she honored me with her trust, but she seemed to keep everyone else at arm’s length, like she was afraid of getting too close to any of them. She never married, though I do know she had lovers in her life, Alex explained and a tear slid down her face. She was a good friend, and I will miss her very much.

Ariel realized that Alex had been far closer to the late Dame Estelle than she was admitting. She took the other woman’s hand. I’m sorry for your loss, Alex.

    Thank you, Alex said.

You said she had lovers as well? Ariel asked. Why weren’t they in the will?

I know one was very special to her, but she never spoke of him very much. I never met him, and she made no provisions for him when we wrote the will. I tried to ask her about it, but she only said he would be taken care of. I got the impression that there was something... Funny, about their relationship though, Alex shrugged. Like I said, she didn’t talk about it much

Tara stopped at Walter’s Deli and Alex went in to get the sandwiches. The three women drove to a nearby park, sat at a table and ate. They chatted and got to know one another. Tara was beautiful but painfully shy. She had wanted to go to college, her family couldn’t afford it, but made too much money for her to get financial aid. Her Aunt and Uncle, who worked for Dame Estelle at the mansion, asked Dame Estelle if she would consider the girl for the driving job. She got a job just in time for Dame Estelle to pass away; Ariel assured her she was in no danger of losing the job now.

They continued their jaunt to the mansion and Ariel was truly amazed. The house was huge. The staff was outside to meet them as they pulled up, and Ariel decided that Estelle had a soft spot for young, pretty women. Alex introduced Nichole, Wendy and Taylor as maids, and the older couple, John and Betty as ground's keeper and cook.

Ariel told them all she was glad to meet them, and shook all of their hands. All of them were friendly, but it was clear they missed their former mistress. I don’t know how Dame Estelle did things here, but I want you all to know that I don’t believe in you being servants. You’re not. You are here to help me keep this monster clean, looking good, and to keep us all fed. If any of you have a problem, I don’t care what it is, come to me, and we’ll see if we can get it figured out.

Alex and Betty led her into her new house, and gave her a tour, it was a long tour. There were suites of rooms on the upper floors, and the master bedroom was palatial. It had a huge, very comfortable looking bed, walk-in closet that was twice the size of Ariel’s dorm room, and a bathroom that didn’t actually qualify for the name. A glass walled enclosure with eight showerheads and benches along the walls classified as the shower, but the room also had a ten person hot-tub. A huge built-in vanity with four sinks next to the door to the closet/dressing room, and last but not least two massage tables with a full assortment of oils and lotions. Dame Estelle knew how to live.

Damn! I love this bathroom! I’ll have to see about hiring a masseuse! Ariel chuckled.

Alex smiled. Wendy is a very skilled massage therapist and has been teaching Taylor.

Wait until you see the backyard, Ma’am, Betty said, grinning and waving her out the now open patio doors. We can walk through them in a minute, but the best view is from up here.

Ariel walked out on a balcony that also had doors out of the bedroom. From that vantage point, she could see what could only be called a small water park surrounded by wonderful trees and flowering plants of many different varieties. There was a small pool house, and off to one side was another small house that Betty told her was where she and John lived. The girls had suites on the first floor near the kitchen.

Beyond the park with the waterfalls and smaller bathing pools was a large open yard easily the size of a football field and at the very back of the property was a large steel building that looked an awful lot like an airplane hangar without the big doors.

What’s in that? Ariel asked pointing out the building.

We don’t know. Only Dame Estelle ever went into it; usually as she was leaving for her week away. We figure it has a car, and whatever else she thought she needed in it, but none of us was allowed in there, Betty said. I admit, we are all curious, but there are no windows, and it has a very elaborate lock and security system, so none of us has been able to peek, Betty admitted.

Well, I guess I’ll find out what’s in there soon enough, Ariel said.

Ariel, Dame Estelle asked me to show you the den last. She was explicit that I was to unlock the safe, show you a few of the items in it, then leave you alone to look over it. If you would like, you can have Tera drive you back to your dorm tonight, or I can arrange for your personal things to be packed and brought here, Alex said.

Do you work tomorrow, Alex? Ariel asked.

That depends on you, Ariel. You’re my only client, Alex admitted.

    Oh! I didn’t realize... I’m sorry, I didn’t know, Ariel said, flustered.

That’s all right, dear, I understand, Alex said. You’ll eventually get the hang of this.

Uh, why don’t we get my stuff moved, and I’ll come get my car tomorrow. I’d kind of like to get to know this place a little better, she said as Alex led her down the steps off the patio. The den was right under her bedroom.

That sounds like a good plan. Why don’t I stop by about eleven and see how you’re doing? Alex offered.

That does sound like a good idea. It’s a good thing we’re on break from school or my roommate would have half the college over here for a party. Do you think we can keep this under wraps for now? Ariel asked.

Sure, but what are you going to tell the rest of your friends, and your boyfriend? Alex asked.

I don’t have that many friends, and a boyfriend would distract me from my studies. I really don’t need that right now. Granted, there are a few cute guys out there, but the classes I was taking pretty much demanded all my attention, Ariel explained.

Betty drew the blinds and curtains on the patio doors then headed for the exit into the house.

Well, I’d prefer to stay and chat, but I’ll be back tomorrow, Alex said as she moved to the wall safe. But, Dame Estelle was very insistent that this is handled today.

Alex, why did she have that title? I mean what exactly does ‘Dame’ mean anyway? Ariel asked.

Alex looked thoughtful for a few minutes. I think it was mostly a nickname from her childhood. Remember how I told you she was always rescuing people and defending the innocent? Everyone just called her Dame Estelle. But I don’t know the origin for certain.

It really does sound like she was a remarkable woman; I’m very sorry I never got a chance to meet her, Ariel said.

Alex smiled at the girl as the safe clicked open. I’ll leave you now. Do you mind if I have Tara take me back to my office? Perhaps one of the girls would care to ride along and drive your car back for you?

That would be stellar! Would you ask one of them, please? Ariel said as she tossed her car keys to Alex.

I believe there’s a DVD and an envelope for you in the safe, as well as some cash. Estelle wanted you to watch the DVD first. She was very clear that you should put the disk in the laptop on the desk. Give me a call if you need anything before tomorrow.

Thank you, Alex. Feel free to stop by anytime you want. I feel like we are becoming friends, and as I said, I don’t have a lot of those.

Alex smiled at Ariel as she locked the door and closed it behind her.

Ariel slowly sank down into one of the comfortable overstuffed chairs and relaxed. It had been one hell of a day; she had inherited this house, untold billions of dollars, and the goddess only knew what else. It was a lot to adjust to. Whoever Dame Estelle Parker had been, she had been very nice to Ariel.

With a sigh, Ariel got up and looked in the safe. There had to be a hundred thousand dollars on the lower shelf of the safe! Ariel swallowed hard and grabbed the large manila envelope and the DVD sitting on the top shelf. There was a heavy ring sitting on top of the jewel case with a DVD in it, so Ariel took all three over to the desk and sat down to go through them.

When she lifted the lid of the laptop, the screen came to life but asked for a password. Ariel didn’t know if it would do any good, but she put the DVD into the drive and sat back in the very comfortable office chair. She was so comfortable, in fact, that she didn’t even feel the needle enter her neck. She was out before the computer finished loading the DVD.

    Chapter Two

Ariel awoke slowly. Her neck hurt from sleeping in a chair and she had a slight headache. The headache only got worse when she opened her eyes. It was dark in the room, but she could see clearly. Overlaying her vision was a heads-up display like she was playing a video game of some kind. The fact that she wasn’t, had her wondering if she might be dreaming.

No, young one, you’re not dreaming. What you’re seeing is a neural-cybernetic interface that will enable you to interact directly with my flight and weapons systems, a male voice said.

Ariel jumped a little and looked around the room in fear. However the person talking didn’t actually sound threatening, he actually sounded very... friendly. Still a little fear crept back in when Ariel couldn’t find him. Uh, where are you? I can’t see you.

I’m not in the room young one. We are speaking via the interface I just mentioned. In fact, you don’t need to ‘speak’ at all. Just ‘think’ to me, the voice replied.

‘Okay, now I’m going insane. That has to be it; I’m hearing things. I knew I should have never smoked that joint with Jessica in high school. I knew it was laced with something,’ Ariel thought to herself.

Young one, you are not going insane. I am real, and you are ‘hearing’ my voice. We are communicating through a neural interface I implanted in you while you were asleep.

Okay, so if you’re real, and I’m not delusional, just where are you? Ariel asked in her mind.

My central processing and memory cores are in our ship. The ship is located in a large building at the back of our property, the voice answered.

Central processing and memory cores? You’re not human? Ariel asked.

No, I am an Artificial Intelligence. For lack of a better description, really advanced computer, though calling me a computer is like calling your current residence a tar-paper shack. I achieved sentience eight-hundred and twenty-nine of your years ago, and accepted assignment to this ship and this mission. You will be my third pilot since that time, the voice said.

Okay, this is just way too much to wrap my mind around all at once. Do you have a name? Ariel asked.

The ship’s designation is DSRP-2342, but your mother called me Cole. I don’t know why, except that she seemed to like that name, Cole replied.

    My mother?

Yes, my former pilot, Dame Estelle Parker was your mother, though her mate could also be called your mother, Cole explained.

Okay Cole, I’m really starting to get confused here, Dame Estelle was my mother? Who was her mate? How could her mate, also be called my mother? Ariel asked.

I will explain everything, young one, but you need sustenance, and more sleep. Tomorrow, you should come out here so we can finish your enhancements. You must keep your strength up through this process, Cole answered.

You’re kidding, right? There is no way in hell I’m going to be able to eat or go to sleep right now. I 've got a thousand questions I really want answers too right now! Ariel exclaimed.

Ariel, you will have your answers, I promise, but you must eat and sleep; you will need the strength for the enhancements tomorrow, Cole said patiently.

Okay, but I still think I’m going crazy, and you’re just a figment of my over-active imagination, Ariel replied.

The digital clock in her vision said it was nine-thirty, so it wasn’t completely dark outside. Ariel opened the door to find a note from Betty. A plate of food had been made up and left in the refrigerator for her. Once finished, could she, please rinse it and leave it in the sink for morning. Her stomach growled and Ariel headed for the kitchen.

I think you will find Betty to be an excellent chef, young one. Your mother really loved her cooking, Cole said.

Okay, since we are talking about her again; how can Dame Estelle be my mother? Ariel asked.

Obviously you don’t mean the fact that she gave birth to you. Dame Estelle was my only friend since security concerns prohibit anyone else on your planet knowing of me, but some things she never really explained to me. Like her decision to give you up. On an assignment like this, it is prudent to have a child to take over for you in the event of an emergency. So with my help, we combined her DNA with that of a young woman she cared deeply for, and conceived you. She carried and gave birth to you, but something happened and she explained to me that it would be best to give you up for now, and watch over you from a distance. Dame Estelle has a very large hologram file of you in my memory core, Cole explained.

I wonder why Estelle never told her... Oh, my goddess! My other parent is Alex isn’t it? Ariel asked.

You are right, young one. Miss Alexis Moran is also your mother, Cole explained.

Cole, Alex couldn’t have been very old twenty-two years ago. She doesn’t look all that old now.

Alexis Moran is currently forty-three years old, by this planet’s calendar.

But, I think Alex deserves to know I’m her daughter too, Ariel said.

How will you do that, young one? You would have to explain everything, Cole replied.

Ariel paused in her meal over the sudden change in topic. Uh, yeah, but...

Trust me here; if you tell anyone that you have a spacecraft display overlaying your vision, and you are talking to that space craft in your mind, you will spend the better part of your life in a padded room. Wendy’s approaching, so just remember; you are the only one that knows about me, Cole said.

Okay, but what about... Ariel began, but Wendy interrupted her thoughts.

Good evening, Miss. I was wondering if you would like a massage before bed? It’s had to have been a stressful day for you.

Smiling at the question, Ariel quickly rinsed off her plate and left it in the sink. That sounds wonderful, but I think I should get a shower first; I feel icky.

That would be fine, miss. The hot water will help relax you and the massage would finish the job, Wendy said smiling softly.

    ––––––––

While she slept, Ariel dreamed. A great alliance made up of many races from many star systems had formed. The alliance prevented war, encouraged trade, and fostered peaceful exploration of uncharted space. As with any society, it had its darker sides. Slavery, drugs, trade in restricted items over a black market, and piracy were only a few of the more common crimes.

The Alliance responded by creating a branch of its military to patrol, regulate, and enforce Alliance law. A specific code of conduct was a sworn oath, and they were sent forth in specially built ships. They were the highest form of law enforcement in the Alliance. These men and women were called Guardians.

After extensive training and testing, the oath was offered and accepted. The Guardian was given the title of Dame or Sir and became a knight of the Alliance.

In the remote reaches of the galaxy, in an area of space known as Golan quadrant, a new race of beings had been detected. They seemed very warlike and had large fleets of heavily armed warships. Peace and trade envoys had been sent but were never heard from again. Finally, the Alliance sent a Guardian to investigate the intentions of the new race and discover the fate of the envoys.

The Guardian was never seen again, but a single encrypted message was received by a remote listening post. The new race was very hostile, the envoys had been questioned, tortured and killed. The race, who called themselves the Kragan Empire didn’t originate in the Golan quadrant, but had crossed the void from another galaxy. The Guardian was attempting to make the crossing himself to estimate their new enemy’s strength. He did warn, however, that so far, there were well over a thousand huge warships already poised for the invasion of this galaxy.

That was where the message ended. No one knew if the Guardian had been destroyed, or the signal had been jammed. A galactic crossing would take years with current drive technology, so it had to have been imperative for the Guardian to make such a choice. No one doubted the truth of the message.

The Alliance council decided to place Guardians as scouts in the sectors between the heart systems, and the Golan quadrant. However, given the original location and disposition of the enemy forces; there was no doubt which sectors they would be coming through.

Dame Estelle Parker had been a new Guardian but volunteered for assignment to a small backwards planet in the center of the invasion corridor. Her duties would be to patrol the area and warn the rest of the Alliance when the invasion began. No one believed a single Guardian would stand long against an invading armada. Earth would be one of the first planets hit, and it was surmised it would fall quickly. The nearest Alliance fleet was a hyper-week away in the Indig sector.

Dame Estelle made monthly patrols of the sector, searching for evidence of the invading fleet, as well as performing the regular duties of a Guardian. Those duties, however, were limited to keeping this system isolated from the rest of the Alliance. Earth was the most advanced, though not the only, inhabited planet in this sector, but the Alliance had declared it off limits for trade. Claiming the inhabitants were too hostile and childish to be allowed membership into the Alliance at this time. That, however didn’t stop everyone. There were rogue traders and slavers that would try their luck with the planet. Some of them did make it, from time to time, but Dame Estelle was good at her duties and the rampant paranoia of the planetary governments assisted her.

With the help of her ship’s AI, she created a comfortable life for herself on the planet where she wouldn’t have to explain her frequent absences or eccentric behavior. Being longer lived than the humans on this planet, she would need to seemingly ‘die’ occasionally and leave her estate to a ‘niece’ or someone, then she would assume that identity and continue her work. She even took in foster children and made sure they were cared for and received the best education and up-bringing they could.

However, shortly after she had ‘died’ and began a new life, she fostered a young woman that changed her whole life. Alexis Moran was a beautiful young girl in dire need of someone to care for her. Dame Estelle took her in and gave her love. For Dame Estelle had fallen quite hard for the young waif, but would never do anything to harm the girl’s well-being. So, she gave her what love she could, and tried to be her best friend. However, she did get a sample of the girl’s DNA for the ship. Using advanced medical techniques, the ship created a viable embryo and implanted it in Dame Estelle. Nine months later, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl. Shortly, Dame Estelle took the baby to child services, and she was adopted a few weeks later.

One night, two weeks before Alexis was to leave for Harvard Law School, Alexis came to Estelle’s bed. For the first time in two hundred years, Dame Estelle Parker was tempted to violate her oath by telling the girl everything, and claiming her officially as her mate.

However, Dame Estelle did not violate her oath. She continued with her duties, and Alexis graduated law school and immediately started handling the personal affairs of Dame Estelle.

A few years later, Dame Estelle Parker, Guardian of the Alliance on planet Earth was killed by an Arcronian slaver when she tried to prevent him from kidnapping several hundred Earth-born, human slaves. Cole used its remotes to make it look like she had died in a car wreck, and sent a report back to the Alliance Council. It was time to let Dame Estelle’s daughter learn of her heritage, and give her the rights of refusal to become a Guardian and take up her mother’s position.

    ––––––––

Ariel awoke feeling well rested and relaxed. Wendy had been right, the massage had felt wonderful, and had greatly contributed to a good night’s sleep.

Good morning, Cole. Did you send me those dreams last night? Ariel asked after she got out of the shower.

Yes I did, and I would like to compliment you; you seem to have made the adjustment to having the implant very fast. How is it that you figured out that I was the source of the dream? Cole replied.

You had to be; it was too coherent and smooth flowing to be one of my normal dreams. I also remember it. Normally, I don’t remember all that much of the dreams I have. I think I remember all of this one, Ariel admitted. So you want me to become one of these Guardians?

Yes, your mother hoped that you would accept it if the need arose. You are the only person, genetically speaking, capable of accepting it on this planet. The council could, and would send someone else, but currently there are less than five thousand registered Guardians, spread out over the entire galaxy. That includes those Guardians in admin and fleet positions. We need you. Cole said.

So, because Dame Estelle was my mother, I’m the only one here that can become a Guardian? Have you tested the entire planet? If you are that shorthanded, it would seem worth the effort to check everyone.

The genetic variables required for implantation and enhancement are not common to the humans of Earth. It is statistically improbable for someone else on this planet to possess the correct set of variables. There are also psychological aspects that must be considered; a Guardian spends a large amount of time in flight in a relatively small ship, with only the AI for companionship, Cole said. Out of a galaxy population well over a billion trillion souls, only five thousand have become Guardians. The point of your parentage has only a little to do with you having the correct variables. However, having Dame Estelle as one of your progenitors certainly enabled the occurrence of those variables.

Okay, talking about this is giving me a headache. While I get dressed for the day, why don’t you tell me what happens next? Ariel asked.

I’ll need you to spend about twenty four hours out here so we can complete the enhancements. By then, Guardian Commander Tho’ren of Claudus Alphecca should be here to oversee your training. You’ll have to discuss the schedule with him once he gets here, Cole answered. I have created a background for him here. He will be posing as an acquaintance of yours from school that will undertake a summer job as your physical trainer. He still has a slight accent so his name here will be Thorn Ost from Austria.

Ariel paused as she was about to leave the room for breakfast, That is actually almost perfect. I did use the gym quite a bit, the story should be believable, at least on the surface.

By ‘acquaintance,' I meant only that you’ve seen him at the gym and perhaps said ‘hello’ on occasion. You by no means actually know each other. He will be a senior that is finishing up his master’s degree in sports medicine, Cole explained. Claudus Alphecca shares the sport of soccer with Earth, and Tho’ren is an avid fan. The rules are slightly different, but it is in essence the same game. His supposed dream is to one day become a team trainer. All the ‘paperwork’ is in place for his background.

Alex will be back this morning, and I’d like to spend more time with her. But I’ll tell everyone that I have some stuff I’d like to take care of, and I’ll be back tomorrow. That should cover this absence. I’ll drive around the property, and come see you. I didn’t find the code for the door lock though.

Cole chuckled in her mind. There isn’t one. I know who is trying to open the door and either allow access, or deny it. All you have to do is make it look like you’re entering a code, and I’ll let you in.

One last question before I get to the kitchen, how long has it been since the last patrol? Ariel asked, pausing outside the kitchen.

Guardian Commander Tho’ren is performing it now. He will assume that responsibility until you are to take over, Cole said. Enjoy your meal.

    Chapter Three

Breakfast was surprisingly pleasant. The staff welcomed Ariel as if she were family. Even Tara seemed to relax and enjoy the meal. What surprised Ariel was that Tara, the blonde goddess and seeming bimbo, was anything but. She was studying advanced physics at UNLV and was actually working toward her doctorate. While the ‘dumb blonde’ act wasn’t ‘fully’ an act, she used it to keep most people from taking an interest and distracting her from her goals. John and Betty were very proud of their niece.

Wendy, Taylor and Nichole were typical college age young women that had started out just trying to make a living, but found they really enjoyed working for Dame Estelle. Ariel made a mental note to speak to Alex about setting up scholarships for the four young women.

"I will endeavor to remind you about the scholarships for the girls," Cole said in her mind as she left the kitchen.

Ariel had wondered just how much of her thoughts the old computer actually could read. "Can you read all my thoughts, Cole?"

"Not yet. As we become more familiar with each other, your mind will become less opaque to me. You will also learn how to shield some things from me, though I hope you don’t do that very much. You are the only being I have to interact with here; interaction with your mind is what keeps me sane, Cole said. I won’t intentionally violate your private thoughts, or intrude on intimate moments unless it’s an emergency. Dame Estelle chose to give me almost full access to her mind, though she kept a small area just to herself. She was a very generous person."

Ariel grinned to herself, "It sounds like I have a lot to live up too."

"No, young one, comparison between Dame Estelle and yourself is inevitable, but you are going to be yourself just as she was her own person. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Just be yourself."

"Now you sound a lot like my father. He always insisted that no matter what, I should always be myself." Ariel said.

"He sounds like a wise man," Cole said.

"He is, I wish you could meet him some day. I wonder if there is a way I can help him and my mother out? they would never just accept a monetary gift, but I do know that, with my college bills, retirement is going to be tight for them," Ariel pondered.

"May I suggest that, once you get settled here, you invite them for a visit? Perhaps they will allow the gift once they see that it really is important to you," Cole said.

"I don’t know how that’ll work with the Commander around. I mean, I don’t care about misleading the others, but I could never lie to my folks; they could always tell when I was," Ariel said.

"Then I wouldn’t lie to them, I wouldn’t tell them all of the truth. Remember, the truth is a great way to lie," Cole advised.

"Hey, isn’t there a knight’s code or something that says we can’t speak falsehood?"

Cole chuckled into her mind. "You mean the lines about not bearing false witness, or telling a lie, even to the bad guys?"

    "Yeah, that’s it."

"It worked great for King Arthur but only gets you into trouble when you’re trying to track down slavers. Our oath boils down to one important idea; be honorable when the situation demands honor, but do what it takes to get the job done the rest of the time. I know it kinda shatters your image of ‘noble knights defending the realm’ but we are dealing with reality here," Cole explained.

"Really? Does that mean you can deceive me? Especially since I haven’t taken the oath yet?" Ariel asked.

"Actually, young one, I am bound tighter to the truth now than I will be once you take the oath. Any deception on mine, or any of your trainers’ parts, invalidates your oath and is grounds for immediate dismissal of all your trainers. In my case, that would constitute deactivation as well. As a candidate, you cannot be manipulated; it’s our duty to ensure you are not, Cole explained seriously. Think about what I’ve told you. Alex has just arrived; go have a good day with your mother, then come see me tonight. Guardian Commander Tho’ren will be here in two days. You need to finish the enhancement process before then."

Ariel closed the door to the den behind her and leaned back against it. "Cole I was jerking your chain. I knew you haven’t been lying to me, or are you not aware this connection thing goes two ways?"

"What do you mean? A human cannot read an artificial mind. We can communicate through the neural interpreter, but that’s all. I do have a data connection to your mind, but it isn’t a bi-directional link."

"Really? So how do I know the intermix protocols for the hyperdrive engines on the ship? How about the velocity to mass ratio needed to successfully transit a wormhole? Ariel asked. I thought it was a normal part of the neural interface, to be honest, I was kinda of depressed because of the unfair advantage I’d have in school."

"Such a link is unprecedented! There are very rare reports of humans that have had some form of mental ability, but never has there been a report of any being reading an AI," Cole said.

"Great, I’m even a freak among aliens!" Ariel snorted. "I always knew I was weird."

"Being different is not a bad thing, young one. Without the uniqueness, and those qualities special in each one of us, our society would stagnate. We would become homogenous. Being different is not a reason to be ashamed, but rather a reason to celebrate, Cole said. I never have understood the social bias here to ‘fit in .'"

A knock on the door startled Ariel and interrupted the mental conversation. Quickly, Ariel sat behind the desk and said ‘come in.' The door opened to admit Alex; however, instead of her usual business attire, she was wearing a pair of tight blue jeans, and a thin silk top. Her long, dark brown hair was unbound and flowed almost to her waist.

Wow, you look really good, Alex! Ariel said.

Alex smiled, Well, an old woman has to do something to compete with all of you young ‘hotties’ from the college.

You’re not an old anything, and you know it! Ariel said honestly. Alex blushed, but it was clear that she really appreciated the compliment.

Alex had been feeling old and lonely lately. Then she met Ariel for the reading of Estelle’s will. Alex had just started getting over the loss of her wonderful friend when this girl comes into her life. Ariel was so much like Alex’s lost Estelle that just being in the same room with her made Alex happier.

In an effort to change the subject, Alex nodded toward the desk. I see you watched the DVD, did you get a chance to go over the rest of the documents in there?

No, as a matter of fact, I was so distracted by the contents of the disk, I left the safe open all night. I hope nothing’s missing, but I doubt any of the others would come in here without asking me first, Ariel replied.

Even if they did, I don’t think they’d bother it. Estelle trusted them all completely, Alex said confidently. So, what did you have in mind for today?

Well, I should probably look through the rest of the stuff Dame Estelle left for me, then I need to get my stuff moved. I think I can probably retire my car – since I really don’t need another car anymore, and I was wondering if we could go shopping for a bit. We don’t need to buy much, but it’s my way of dealing with stress.

It really wouldn’t matter how much we bought, and I think shopping is what every woman does to relieve stress. Did you want to take the limo, or one of the other cars? Alex asked.

No, no limo today, I’m sure Tara would like to have the weekend off. What do you say to just the two of us? Maybe we can think of something to tell my roommate to explain why I’m moving, Ariel said teasingly. I love my roommate, but she can be a bit aggressive, and I don’t want this wonderful mansion to become the hottest new college party spot in Nevada.

Alex shuddered at the thought of the mansion being over-run with partying college kids. What will you tell her if she ever comes to visit? I know I stayed in contact with my old roommate for years.

I guess I’ll just have to deal with it when it happens. Maybe get a bit aggressive myself! Ariel said. Acting like she had a different thought, she asked. Do you think I could actually take some time away? I mean away from everything; my roommate, my life at the college, just... everything. I mean, ever since I graduated from high school, I’ve wanted to just take a step back. I never could though, usually because of money or other obligations.

Alex smiled. Of course you can. I’d prefer it if you could at least call every now and then since I might need a signature or a decision on something, but you could take all the time you wanted. When would you like to leave?

Ariel looked thoughtful, Well, I’d like to take a couple of days starting tomorrow, and maybe some more time a bit later. This is a lot to get used to.

That should be no problem dear, just take a cell phone with you, Alex said. Any ideas where you’d like to go?

I’ll probably just get in the car and drive to start with, or maybe jump on a plane. I really don’t care as long as I get a break from my life for a short time.

Ariel opened the envelope and pulled the contents out on the desk. Since Alex was right there, luckily nothing in the packet referred to Dame Estelle’s secret life. One of the documents was only the password for the computer, and the main access codes for all the alarms on the estate. There were powers of attorney to cover the time it took for the legal system to switch everything over into Ariel’s name. Finally, there was an amateurish blueprint for a mansion that Dame Estelle had wanted to build. From what little Ariel understood, it would be a beautiful home. Finally, there was a business size envelope with Ariel’s name on it. Ariel opened it and silently read the letter inside.

    ––––––––

    My dearest Ariel,

By now, you’ve learned the reason I named you as my beneficiary; if you haven’t, please stop reading this, and play the DVD that was with it. Play the DVD only on the laptop here in the Den.

There is so much I want to tell you, but cannot. I am truly sorry I had to mislead you when you searched for your birth parents. All I can tell you is that it was necessary to do so. I cannot even tell you why I had to give you up for adoption.

Please continue to care for the people working the estate. They are all good, hard-working people that really needed a place here. I trust all of them completely, but I’ll leave it up to you to find your own answers there.

Also, please take care of your other mother, Alex. I have had to lie to her about you since the beginning, and that is the only regret I really have in this world.  Perhaps the day will come when you can tell her who you are. If that day comes, please take her to meet Cole.

You will come to understand the relationship I had with Cole. Even though he isn’t human, I loved him anyway. I don’t think it’s possible to spend so much time with someone and not develop feelings for them.

Finally, in the packet where you found this letter, you saw plans for a new house. I hired a company and had them begin construction without telling Alex or Cole about it. I wanted it to be a surprise. As you can see, there will be a private airstrip and plenty of room for Cole to build himself a place that will be easier to get in and out of. You can find instruction on how to get there on my computer. You should probably contact the construction company soon as word of my death may make them nervous about finishing the job. Also remember that with your enhancements, it will be almost impossible for someone to lie to you. Cole should be able to tell you more about it.

Make contact with an Admiral Hs’ean aboard the Divine light. She is a gruff old bitch, but her bark is far worse than her bite, though she can bite pretty damn hard as well. I do wish I could have met you face to face, but if you’re reading this, then Alex has enacted the will.

I know you are a good person, I have been watching you all your life. I’m very proud of the person you’ve become, and grateful to your adopted parents for the wonderful job they did raising you. Please know that I do love you, and truly wish things could have been different.

    Love always,

    Your mother,

    Estelle

    ––––––––

Alex and Ariel talked about several tropical vacation spots as they left for the mall. During the drive, Alex called a moving company, and made arrangements to have Ariel’s possessions moved from the dorm room.

Apparently, the man on the other end of the phone recognized the address and told Alex they could have a crew there in a few minutes. Instead of the mall, the women headed for the UNLV campus.

Alex didn’t mention the letter or the tears Ariel had in her eyes while she read it. Ariel didn’t mention it either but seemed a little off the rest of the afternoon.

    ––––––––

What do you mean you’re moving out? You can’t! What happens if they stick me with some catholic school prude? Brenda asked pleadingly. You can’t leave me like this!

"Brenda, you are a catholic school prude, remember? Besides, I’ve already paid for the next year, so they can’t assign another roommate for you until then at least, Ariel explained. Basically, you’ll have the whole room to yourself for the next semester."

But you still haven’t said why! It takes a lot of money to live off-campus, especially here. Not to mention the parking nightmares! Brenda tried again.

Remember how I told you I’d been searching for my birth mother? Ariel asked.

Brenda nodded. Yeah, you said it was a dead end. Something about how they had died in a car wreck.

Ariel nodded. Yeah, that’s what I thought, but it turns out that was not the truth. When my mother passed away, she left a will and I am the only one in it, she left her entire estate to me. It turns out she lived right here in Las Vegas. I’m moving into her house. I’d like to get to know more about her, and this seemed like a good way to do it.

Was that what the whole legal thing was about yesterday? Brenda asked.

Yeah, Alex here was a close friend as well as Estelle’s lawyer. She has agreed to give me a hand getting settled and to answer any questions I might have about my mother, Ariel explained.

Brenda nodded her understanding. Have you told your folks yet? Remember how protective your father is of you.

No, I haven’t told them of this yet, but they knew I was trying to find out about my birth mother. Just because I’m moving out doesn’t mean you aren’t still my best friend, or that I’m going to drop out of college. I’m just changing residences, Ariel explained.

Brenda seemed to accept the situation then, but still asked a lot of questions, and talked endlessly during the time Ariel and Alex where there. Ariel was sorely tempted to ask Brenda to join them on their shopping trip, but that would have brought up questions from Brenda that Ariel wasn’t ready to answer yet.

Since they were finished with ‘moving,' the two ladies headed for the mall for a day of shopping.

    Chapter Four

Ariel spent the day getting to know Alex better. She really liked what she was learning. Alex was funny, intelligent, and just plain fun to be with. Getting to know Alex better also gave Ariel a little insight into the person Estelle must have been. Alex was a genuinely nice good person, and Ariel could understand what Estelle had seen in the woman.

Ariel thought that perhaps Alex might be attracted to her as more than a friend, and felt guilty that she couldn’t tell Alex the truth, and avoid hurting the woman.

Cole took that moment to inject a warning into Ariel’s mind. Careful young one, you are dangerously close to revealing too much.

I know, Cole. I plan on discussing it with the Commander after he gets here, but this woman deserves to know I’m her daughter. From what I know of Dame Estelle, this deception had to have been tearing her up. Dame Estelle hiding this from Alex had to be one of the hardest things she’d ever done, Ariel replied. Remember, Estelle chose Alex to be the other part of me.

Alex took Ariel’s hand suddenly. Where were you just now? Estelle used to do that all the time, but wouldn’t tell me what she was daydreaming about.

I was imagining having you at the mansion all the time. I think it’d be really neat. I feel a connection with you, and I’d like to keep that, Ariel said. Would you, please, consider moving in with us?

Are you sure that’s wise, young one? Cole asked.

Ariel stuck out a mental tongue at her mentor. Of course, she’s my ‘mother.'

There’s nothing to consider, when can I move in? Alex asked smiling softly.

    ––––––––

Alex took a suite down the hall from Ariel’s. After they got home and unloaded their purchases, Alex returned to her apartment to grab enough clothes for a few days. Dinner was ready when she returned, and Ariel announced that Alex would be joining the household permanently. The staff was happy about the decision and welcomed the woman home.

Ariel also announced that she would be gone for a couple of days, starting either late tonight, or early tomorrow. There was a minor concern over that until Alex explained that Ariel only wanted time to adjust to all the changes in her life.

Ariel was excited after dinner but managed to contain her exuberance so no one noticed. She packed a bag, kissed Alex and the other girls, on the cheek, good-bye. Ariel grabbed the keys for the Dodge Charger and left the mansion by the front gate.

Do you know how to get around here, young one? Cole asked.

Not a clue, I was hoping you would guide me. However, I was going to just drive around for a few minutes before I asked you, I just love the way this car handles, Ariel replied.

Oh, you’re just going to love flight training. Our ships are the most advanced in the alliance fleet. Every time we make a port call, I get the latest upgrades installed. We need to be careful though, some of the stuff they dream up in research seems like its primary function is to suck power from the reactor.

That reminds me that there was a couple of things I wanted to ask you about, but I’d like to learn more physics so I don’t sound like an idiot when I do ask, Ariel said.

"Ask anyway, though rare, it has happened that supposedly ‘uneducated’ minds can have innovative ideas. Mostly it’s because they are not blinded by a specific school of thought. So, ‘uneducated’ in reality means ‘unbiased,'" Cole explained.

Well, I was looking at what you’re armed with, and it reminded me of my physics professor’s lecture on magnetic induction as a form of propulsion. I understand ships have energy shields as well as armor. I guess I could have found the answer to my question by asking if there are any reports of dangerous dust particles that have a small mass so they are almost impossible to see, but are traveling at such a high velocity that shields and armor are poor protections, Ariel said. I realize that sounded like I was blathering, so I hope you could follow it.

I think so, if I ignore the first part of what you said. You want to know if shields and armor are sufficient protections against a micro-meteor storm? Cole asked

    Yes, something like that.

Then the answer is yes, shields and armor are sufficient protections against micro-meteors. Why do you ask?

"Well, as I said, I got to thinking
