JR Robberts

JR Robberts grew up in Pretoria, South Africa with his grandparents. His passion for writing and all things artistic started from a young age, earliest work was at thirteen with poems published in a special anthology called Taking Flight published by the International Library of Poetry."I'm a dreamer. What I write comes from inside, a place so deep that sometimes it is scary but at the same time exciting to see what I am capable of. I know I'm a newbie but writing to me is not about fame or fortune. I'm a story teller and what is important is my voice and how far it carries. If I can touch someone with my words then I am happy. The rest is just a bonus."

    The Trailing Mountains

    For Ethan, a special boy

Once upon a time in a land far, far away there lived a tribe of man. These were no ordinary men, very few encountered them along their journey over the trailing mountains and those who were lucky enough to meet them shared their encounters with pride. Often no one would believe them. After a while, the trailing mountain became known amongst many folks as the cursed path, one that if walked would take away your sanity and steal your soul. Others believed it was a special place, reserved for only a select few, a place of magic.

Trisha opened the wooden door of their farmhouse and stepped outside. The air was crisp and clean, the trailing mountains clearly visible in the distance. Her boy Alex was still sleeping as she carried the metal bucket to the well. As of late, she had been troubled with disturbing thoughts, thoughts and worries her husband did not share. Alex was nearing his fourth birthday and the time of playing dumb would soon no longer be enough, just like the tales of mystic men in the mountains people around the village did not take kindly to things that were out of the ordinary and Alex was one of those things. He was unique and because of that he would often be excluded from many activities. He had very little friends which meant Trisha and her husband had no friends either, you could say they were outcasts but people were just too nice to admit it. Trisha smiled and waved politely as the pastor’s wife and daughter walked past in the distance making their way towards the chapel. The bucket was heavy as she carried it back to the house trying not to mess.

Mother let me help you, Alison said as she took the bucket of water from her mother. You know what they thinking don’t you?

Who? Trisha asked trying to pretend that she did not know who Alison was referring to.

Those two. They go to that chapel every day like it is their calling but their thoughts don’t match their actions.

Now Alison you have no business concerning yourself with that. The pastor and his wife have done a lot for this community.

I have heard them, mother. They talk about us, about Alex. I think the time they spent outside that building they cling, they use to judge others, judge that which cannot be explained.

I am sure that is not the case Alison, Trisha replied as they reached the house knowing all too well that she was right. Now come on get your chores done.

Trisha climbed the small ladder up to the small attic where Alex spent most of his days playing games only he understood. She smiled as she saw him sitting up in bed. His eyes filled with happiness as he saw her. He jumped out of bed and extended a hand to his mother who was still making her way towards him, he was all smiles. One thing Trisha could always count on was his smile and the look in his eyes. It was hard to explain to someone else but she knew that even though he could not say it, they understood each other. Alex made his mother sit down on the floor beside him and handed her a piece of coal. Trisha watched as he drew on the floor, it made no sense what he was drawing but then what four-year-old could draw well she thought to try and comfort herself. The various games took almost the whole day. The one thing about Alex was that once he had you he wasn’t letting go. Alex would take his mother’s hand and guide it towards the floor as if to tell her to do the same and she did. Trisha enjoyed these special moments no matter how small they were, days when he was in a good mood and easy to handle.

Trisha? a voice called from downstairs. It was her husband Charles and as usual, he was in a mood. He worked at the saloon in town and often had to deal with rowdy clientele. If only it ended there, many a time he would get questioned about his son, the weird boy as he was known.

You home early, Trisha said as she climbed down the ladder, Alex following closely behind. She kissed him on the cheek while Alex hugged his leg with his dirty black hands putting his tiny arms around any spot he could find. Alex laughed hysterically, it was his way of communicating.

"It is the town fair tonight remember so everyone is closing early
