    Trish looked at the cards on her dresser and stopped at the one from her sister Val. The card was printed with: ‘9 Today!’ in the top corner but Val had lovingly coloured a big ‘3’ in front of it. ‘39’...thirty-nine. On the way to the big one. Well on the way.

    Noticing the time, she hurried upstairs and stood in front of the bathroom mirror, applying eye shadow, mascara and lippy. Her fingers were quick and efficient and the desired familiar look was soon achieved. She stood back and assessed her appearance. ‘Think I’ll pull’ she thought, even though the likelihood of that happening was somewhat remote at ‘Knitting Pretty’. Still, Gerry might come in..

    That evening, after she’d cooked Alex his favourite – steak, chips, mushrooms and fried onions, she sat looking at him over the table.
