    INTRODUCTION

    My name is Elena Adani and I am the creator of the Schiena Attiva ® system and the author of this book. For more than 25 years, back pain was part of my life every single day even though I did not do any type of hard labor and I never had any accidents or suffered any injuries. For a long time, I never asked myself why my back hurt every day. I was convinced it was hereditary, since my father and grandparents always had joint pain.  I was wrong.

    Lifestyle, posture, diet and many everyday situations, especially the quality of our emotions, thoughts, and beliefs, play an important role in our health, more than you think.

    It is a fact that physiology, anatomy, and the particular shape of each of our spines is unique and different from any other individual on this planet. That said, anatomy and physiology are important and cannot be ignored. I firmly believe that emotions, conscious and unconscious thoughts, and a person’s attitude in different situations, are fundamental for his/her physical and mental well-being. In my case, facing the emotions responsible for my backache and changing my beliefs was a life-changing achievement that allowed me to cure my lower back pain, which had by then lasted excessively long.

    Today, I am no longer forced to wear heating pads, or make radical maneuvers to get out of bed, or use healing ointments. I no longer struggle to tie my shoes or do anything else. I can do exercises that, when I was 30 years old, were impossible for me.

    In addition, with this feeling as a starting point, I have the pleasure of introducing the Schiena Attiva® (Active Back) system to you.     1  THE BEGINNING OF MY JOURNEY

    This book explores the psychology of the back, paying attention to the emotions that, more frequently than not, build up in the lumbar, dorsal and cervical regions.

    If you have seen the Star Wars saga, you will certainly remember the Dark side of the Force, a mental state made up of resentment, anger and hatred, which gave certain people great power. Although my back problems were also due to scoliosis and postural errors, emotions have always played a very important role. In my case, I internalized the less positive aspects of my personality, which somatized mainly in the lumbar area to create a true joint block. After not feeling well for ages, one day I realized that if I wanted to fix my backache once and for all, I would first have to face my dark side. I knew it would not be easy, but I felt like it was the only road to take.

    Getting rid of the emotional baggage that was blocking my body and soul was anything but easy. I reached a point where I realized I would need a hand. Then I turned to a life coach, Andrea. He had his work cut out for him in helping me get rid of the behavior responsible for my psychophysical problems, to improve the way I related to others, and to eliminate my fears.  The coaching sessions with Andrea helped me get better. After each meeting, I felt like I was enveloped in physical and mental weightlessness.

    Slowly but surely, I began to feel a sense of freedom that I had never felt before, which went hand in hand with the improvement of the condition of my back. I felt like a kind of invisible force had relieved it from the weight of the past, and from unnecessary attitudes that until then had made me unhappy. This radical change in my psychophysical condition intrigued me so much that I began studying psychosomatics (the connection between physical illness and the relative psychological cause).

    I decided to investigate the deepest origins of back pain, reading many books and taking courses on natural therapies, naturopathy, and personal development.

    My research, and my contact with people who had the same problems as me, convinced me that, any kind of malaise cannot be treated only with drugs or other kind of remedies. It is necessary to understand the person’s experiences, if he or she is going through difficult times, if he or she has suffered traumas such as grief or separation, if he or she does a stressful job, if he or she is happy or upset.
