    About me

    Scenario

Incredibly clear skies to see the Northern Lights and easy access to spectacular landscapes make Abisko, in the Artic Circle, one of the most attractive and popular places in Sweden’s remote north. The 75 square kilometer Abisko National Park extends from the southern shore of impressive and scenic Lake Torneträsk, the biggest mountain lake in Sweden (about 50 miles long). Abisko is framed by the equally impressive profile of Lapporten (the door), a space between two mountains that form the entrance to the Lapland region. This is also the driest region in Sweden and therefore has a relatively long hiking season.

Abisko has two train stations: the Eastern Station (Östra) that puts you in the center of the tiny village, and the Abisko Tourist Station (Tursitstation) on the other side of the highway in front of the STF Hostel (Svenska Turistföreningen) of the Swedish Tourism Association.

Chapter 1: Why Abisko to see the Northern Lights?

Simple: mostly clear skies. One of the biggest obstacles to seeing the Northern Lights are the clouds, common in the northern winter. Abisko is a microclimate; a ring of mountains that serve to break that cloud cover
