    Wendy's Song - Robyn Branick

    Chapter One

O h my God! This is my jam! Kyle screams as he starts jumping up and down. His shoulder length hair bops up and down showing he shaved the sides and bottom too much. He has a bandage on the back of his head. Kyle has brown eyes, a skinny frame, and above average height. His features are nothing special, but his piercings make up for that, in Wendy's eyes.

Rage Against the Machine is his favorite band. He doesn't care about the message of their songs; he likes the angry grunge feeling the music gives him. They are one of the few that are playing on the radio that isn't so sullen. It is the mid-1990s, and most of the top music is Hip Hop and Grunge.

The Grunge music on the pop charts is mellow and pitiful; Kyle wants to feel more. He likes Rage and Marilyn Manson. Manson has a few hits on the charts, but because of the controversies, they don't play him enough.

Kyle, sit back down and shut up! Wendy groans. I am sick of you telling us how much you like this song. It's on all the time. We get it; you love Rage! Wendy is a redhead that loves Aqua Net and high hair. Her makeup is heavy, and her shirts are tight or cropped.  She wears oversized jeans, usually JNCOs. She just bought Adidas Gazelles, and she's proud when she gets brand named clothes. Most kids in town live in mansions, but her parents think clothes shouldn't have to be expensive. Especially since the clothes these days look used and dirty.

Kyle and Wendy have been dating since middle school. They hooked up to Pearl Jam's Jeremy. They're going to graduate high school in a couple of months, and Wendy is sick of how Kyle never grew up. Wendy used to be active in sports, clubs and dedicated to her school work. Kyle slowly convinced her to quit all of her activities and cut class regularly. Wendy feels lucky to graduate.

Kyle was never involved in much. He tried baseball when he was young, but it didn't keep his interest. Teachers are always on his case for not handing in homework, so Kyle cuts class to avoid the harassment. He likes to joke and talk during classes which annoys most of the teachers so another year with Kyle will not be much fun. The school is passing him to get rid of their beloved pain in the ass.

Since the two have nothing to do with their time, they hang out on the football field and smoke pot with a few of their other friends. John brings beer most nights and Kyle always has a couple of blunts ready. John is Kyle's best friend. John's a bit of a slacker like all Gen Xers are, or at least that's what they say.

John doesn't have a girlfriend, but he can charm the pants off of any girl in school. He has a surfer boy look to him. John’s hair is down to his earlobes; it is naturally blonde. His eyes are ice blue, and he has a dark tan. He is tall with an athletic build. John has had many girls in school. He hasn't had Wendy yet. It is apparent to everyone, except Kyle, that John wants her.

Lisa hangs out with the group but doesn't seem to fit in. Lisa has dark hair, heavy Goth makeup, and fashions grunge clothes, mostly black. She is thin and of average height. The guys seem to think Lisa is there for the free booze and pot. Most of the time she is with the group because she has nothing better to do and doesn’t want to be home. Lisa isn’t much of a talker; she doesn’t laugh or smile too often either. Kyle can’t stand her but puts up with Lisa for Wendy’s sake. Wendy needs another female around to keep the guys from being complete morons all of the time.

Lisa is intelligent but does her best not to show it. She doesn't cut class when the rest of the group does; she makes an excuse most of the time. Lisa has good grades and doesn't have to work for them, but she's not about to mess them up for a bunch of screw-ups that aren't going to be her friends after graduation. Lisa wants to get out of this town as quickly as possible, and college is the only way she knows how. In the meantime, she's fine with hanging out with the slackers; they are the only ones who accept her.

There's a party at Glenn's house. You guys wanna go? Kyle asks.

Better than hanging with just you dorks, John replies.
