Her Wayward Rogue - Megan Slayer

    possible.

    Chapter One

Jaxon Jordan wasn’t a fan of the throbbing rave music, but he had to play the role of club kid, so he danced to the music. He wasn’t ready to out himself as a mob child. Being part of the crowd was safer and more entertaining.

Right now, he didn’t care who he was in his other life. He wanted to have fun.

No one knew him besides the regular crowd of college kids who thought his name was Maddox, and no one expected anything from him because they thought he was a struggling student like them. He could relax.

His brothers didn’t know the meaning of the word relax. If they weren’t running the family business, they were chasing wives and kids -- not his idea of a good time. Why settle when there were plenty of experiences in the world and he wanted to try them all? Hell, he wanted to date around and be sure he found the right girl, so why pick one? Sure, he liked Christy and knew she made Dashiell happy, but big deal. So Clint had found a husband and a lady partner. They had a triad. Who cared? At least Clint had made his husband into an honest man. He’d never met his brother’s husband or lady partner. He’d met Christy because she’d been around before he’d left for college.

But he wasn’t ready to have a solo relationship. He wanted variety. He’d seen his brother Danil lose his balls when he got married. Jax refused to be tamed. He wasn’t going to be pushed around, either.

Maddox. Roy joined him at the edge of the dance floor. Where the hell have you been?

Trying to find you. He couldn’t say he’d been debating even going to the club that night. Roy wouldn’t understand.

You weren’t trying to find a piece of ass? Roy laughed. There are a lot of chicks here tonight.

I see. Let’s go to the balcony. It’s too loud. He nudged his friend. Go.

Roy ambled up the winding steps to the balcony overlooking the dance floor. The sound was muted. People sat together in groups of three and four at tiny round tables.

The variety is a little thin tonight, Jax said and selected one of the few empty tables. He gestured to the waitress. Whiskey sour, please?

Me, too, Roy said. He turned his attention to Jax and fidgeted with the napkin. Yeah.

What’s your problem? Jax stared at his friend. What’s eating your ass?

Nothing. Roy refused to meet his gaze. It’s just you’ve been gone a while and out of circulation. It’s like you don’t want to hang with me.

I’ve had classes. Remember? We’re here to become educated, Jax said. You’ve been out of class for a week. Where have you been?

Working, Roy said. He glared at Jax. I have to work to get through school -- unlike you, Mr. Trust Fund.

I don’t have a trust fund. More like an allowance he could pull from as long as he stayed in school. He scanned the crowd. Did you meet a girl or are you working an angle? You don’t believe in honest work. The women below were pretty, but none of them stirred his blood like Emily Wilson.

God damn. This wasn’t the time or place to think about his former love. But wouldn’t the women in the crowd change their mind if they knew he was one of the Jordans? Would they still want to be with him? Or run the other way?

Did you find a girl you like? Roy asked. He nodded. I see a couple that might be fun for a night, and you need a chick.

The conversation made no sense. He hadn’t even started drinking, and he couldn’t keep up with Roy’s changes in discussion. I’m good for now. He accepted the drink from the waitress and smiled. She winked. He held onto the glass, but didn’t imbibe. The wink unnerved him. Maybe he’d grown jumpy in his old age, but something felt off.

How can you be good? You haven’t had your dick sucked in ages. Roy downed three-quarters of his drink. Life’s better when you do.

I know. He abandoned his glass on the table. Spit it out. Who is she? You’ve got a girl.

Ava. Roy beamed. She’s hot. I can’t even… She’s out of my league and totally into me. I’m supposed to meet up with her at ten.

Nice. He nodded once and folded his arms. So, what’s your work?

Being with her. It’s not work, but she gives me nice shit. Roy downed the rest of his drink. The best of everything. I keep waiting on the dream to end.

Ah. He focused on the women. He had no idea who Ava was, but he hated knowing she was most likely using Roy.

Hey, I hear one of the Jordans is here tonight. Roy laughed. In Tulsa. A fucking Jordan here. Why would they come to Tulsa? Don’t they run Ohio or some shit like that?

Maybe they want a change of scenery? Fuck. If the rumor was out there, then he needed to go. So much for his education. He’d have to find another small college. He’d never finish his damn degree.

Whatever. As soon as I can get out of here, I’m leaving this town, Roy said. This town is good enough, but it’s not New York or Los Angeles. Maybe I’ll go to Vegas.

And do what? You’re going for a general studies degree.

So? Roy crinkled his lip in a sneer. You know, I wonder what this Jordan kid looks like. Which one he is. I’ve only ever seen Dash. He’s kind of boring.

Have you considered maybe the kid with the last name of Jordan is just unfortunate to have the same name? He might not be related. Jax shifted in his seat. The sooner he got out of the bar, the sooner he could pack his shit and get the hell away from Oklahoma.

I doubt it. Dash Jordan’s a huge prick and forces people out. He probably made the people with the last name of Jordan change their name or paid for them to go somewhere else so his brother could attend college here. Roy nodded. I bet that’s it. He bought the school off.

You’re talking about my brother. We have more integrity than that. What if the kid didn’t want to stand out? I want to blend in.

Please. They’re into organized crime. They love to be seen, Roy said. I’d want to be seen if I was one of them. Think they’d adopt me?

I have no idea, but if they’re into organized crime, wouldn’t they want to stay on the down-low? They’d never accept Roy now that he’d seen Roy’s true colors. Anyway, it’s a good thing they aren’t around to ask.

    Do you know them?

    Who? The Jordans?

    Yes, Roy snapped. Jesus.

I didn’t know anyone from the Jordan family was at the college. You’re the first one to say anything. Besides, why do you care? He spotted a woman who reminded him of Emily. She exuded sweetness, had curves and seemed down to earth. If Emily was there at the college, she would’ve kicked him in the ass. She’d never have let him hide out, either. She’d have made him earn his degree with his own name. She would’ve kept him on course, instead of allowing him to drift. She hadn’t understood how he felt -- like he had no purpose.

I don’t care, but hey, I got a text from Ava. Her friend, Lucy, wants to go to Muldoon’s. Come with us. Please come. Roy finished Jax’s drink. Maddox, you owe me.

He hated his cover name. He wasn’t a Maddox. I don’t owe you.

I’ve been your friend when you’ve been weird. You’re boring and need to get laid. Let’s go. Roy polished off the second drink. Oh, and pay the bill.

Lovely. Jax pulled a twenty from his pocket and offered it to the waitress as she passed. Thanks. He had no desire to go to another bar and he needed a plan. He’d ditch them on the way. Then he’d go home. He should accept his fate and be a Jordan. His mother probably wanted to see him, even if she’d never understand why he’d run away. Oh well.

He left the club with Roy, but he didn’t see Roy’s girl on the sidewalk. Hell, he noted there weren’t any people in
