John's Journey - Robyn Branick
Chapter One
John opens his eyes . He feels something dripping on his face. The liquid almost tickles. He takes his hands and wipes his cheek. Is that blood? What the hell? He tries to sit up. The world is spinning. He needs to lie back down. Why am I in the back of Kyle’s car? What happened? John takes a deep breath. He attempts to sit up again, slowly. He grabs the seat for support.
John looks out the side window. He realizes the car is on the side of the road. Somehow he was in an accident. He looks in the front seat. Kyle is in the driver’s seat. Kyle? Hey, Kyle!
. He shakes his friend but no response.
John tries to open the back door. It is difficult for him. His arm is in pain. Lights are flashing in the background. Maybe I should lie back down for now. He blacks out.
A couple of days later, John goes to visit Lisa. Hey, Lisa,
he yells to her window. Lisa comes out of her house. His memory is slowly coming back to him. At the hospital, he had no recollection of the crash. He recalls a party that night; he has no idea how he wound up in the backseat of Kyle’s car.
John, where have you been?
The hospital. What happened Friday? We were all at the party; then I wake up in Kyle’s backseat. Where were you and Wendy?
Wendy broke up with Kyle, so we walked to her house, and you guys drove home, at least that’s what we thought,
Lisa lies to him.
You know Kyle’s dead.
Oh my God!
Lisa is worried now. John is beginning to remember. What if his entire memory comes back? He will say something; Kyle was his best friend.
Yeah, and we were both drunk and high, I still had weed in my pocket, so I got in trouble. My parents got me out of it, thank God, but now they’re sending me away. Two months left before graduation and they’re making me leave.
Where are you going?
Well, I have to live with my grandparents for a few months. They want to make sure I’m healthy, then part of the deal they made with their cop friends is I sign up with the Army. It’s gonna suck.
It could be worse. You might not be graduating with us, but I don’t think jail would be fun for you either.
Yeah, you’re right. Well, I gotta go, my parents will kill me if they realize I’m not home. I’ll keep in touch.
Okay, see ya John
Lisa hugs him. John leaves.
John shows up at his grandparents’ house. They are way too old to relate to a teenager, at least that’s what John thinks. John’s grandfather still works. His grandmother stays home to take care of the house. He will be bored sitting around talking to Grams all day. Hopefully, they have cable.
Oh honey, how are you?
Grams greets John with a hug and kiss on the cheek. Grams is a short woman with brown curly hair and plump cheeks like a newborn baby. She is up in age, but one would never know it. She is losing her hair but never had to dye it. The little hair she has left she gets it done once every few weeks, mostly for social purposes.
Hi, Grams. I’m good.
Pops will be home from work around six. I know you think you’ll be bored, but Pops and I have plenty for you to do around here. You’ll be fine.
Oh, mom told you, huh.
No worries. Let’s get you settled until Pops gets back from work; then we’ll have a nice chat.
