Chapter One

Daniel 

It's another evening, another warm evening and I find myself grabbing two beers from the fridge and going outside to the barn. I find Jake there, underneath the engine of his Mustang, covered in dirt and oil. 

He sees me when he comes out from under the car. Hey, he says. He stands. He uses an old rag to wipe his hands. 

I offer him a beer. How's the car coming along? 

He hesitates, but he takes the beer. It's fine. Thanks. He takes a drink, eyes on me, searing into me with that lethal gaze of his. Is that all you came out here for, Daniel? 

I could turn around, walk away and retreat. But I've had enough of that. No. I uh, I came out here to apologize, really apologize. You're right. We don't even really know each other that well, and I shouldn't have said some of those things to you. 

It didn't hurt, man. 

Obviously it did, if it made you feel this way. You wouldn't have gotten so defensive if it didn't hurt, Jake.

He leans against the passenger door of the Mustang. He laughs under his breath. Are you trying to psycho analyze me now or something? 

No. I'm just trying to apologize. And you ought to know how to be a real man and accept the apology. 

His brows raise for a moment. He's surprised by my sudden use of attitude. He nods. Alright. Yeah, you're right. Fine. I accept. 

I stand next to him and lean against the hood of the car. We don't say a word for a moment, just look out at the pastures and watch the sun begin to sink beyond the horizon. 

So, where are you from? I ask. 

Why? 

I wanna get to know you a little better.

He looks my way with a kind smile, and a kind gaze in his eyes. Are you trying to get to me better? Is that was this is? 

Maybe... 

He leans off the Mustang. If you wanna get to know each other better, I know a better place we can do it. 

Chapter Two

Jake 

Mustang fixed, I'm going to take Daniel into town to a cowboy bar. It's about time we get away from the ranch for a night. I'm dressed in clean jeans, clean boots and a nice button up. I go down the hall to find Daniel in the bathroom, checking himself out. He even turns to the side and puts his hand over his stomach. 

I lean in the doorway. Seeing how good your butt looks? 

Surprised, he turns from the mirror fast. No, I uh, I was just, making sure these jeans fit. 

I look up and down his body. He's in jeans, a little tighter than the ones he wears for work. And he has on a plain black shirt, tucked underneath his jeans and under a thick black belt with a golden belt buckle in the shape of Texas. 

I bite my lip as I stare at him. Don't worry, cowboy. You look great. 

He stares back at me, a little shy. You think so? 

I nod. Definitely. Although, turn around. I think you have something on your back.
