    Introduction

When money realizes that it is in good hands, it wants to stay and multiply in those hands.

    ~Idowu Koyenikan

We live in a country where wages are higher than most and unemployment is lower than in many countries. Yet, we have surprisingly high debts. While Americans earn an average of $60,000, according to the latest report from the Federal Reserve, the average American household in almost $140,000 in debt.

Why is that? Well, in North American we have a penchant for owning things. The average householder has over 300,000 items. We can’t seem to part with them. Yet, we keep buying more.

One of the fastest growing industries is building and operating self-storage facilities. We buy more. There’s no place to store our old stuff so we pay yet more money to store it. Ten percent of all homeowners have rented storage facilities.

And things are not getting better. NerdWallet.com’s study indicates that American credit card debt increases at alarming rates each year. In 2017, it had reached over $930 billion dollars. That is nearly seven percent higher than in 2016.

That’s why I’ve written Minimalist Budget. I know, personally, how easy it is to get into debt. Clever advertising campaigns promise things like No down payment. Nothing to pay for twenty-four months and Two years interest-free. These unbelievable offers lure unsuspecting buyers to grab newer, better, faster, flashier items. Slick brochures
