    CHAPTER ONE

Amanda Daniels had stopped at a coffee shop to kill an hour before she had to be home to cook dinner. She wanted to decompress from a long day. While sitting at the small table flipping through her phone, she heard a voice.

    That’s a lovely blouse.

At first, she ignored the comment. She didn’t really know anyone who would be out this time of the day. All of her friends had kids or day-long jobs and would have no opportunity to be in a coffee shop at two in the afternoon.

    And I like your shoes.

Amanda looked up to see a woman seated at the next table smiling at her. Thank you. She responded in a questioning tone not sure if she was the one who had been complimented.

You’re welcome. Pastels look good on you. My name is Joann. Joann Wheeling. The woman held out her hand, and Amanda shook it politely. Joann made a motion towards the empty chair, and Amanda nodded for her to have a seat. I’m sorry to be so forward. I just moved here, and I haven’t really made any new friends, so I decided that I was going to just strike out and give it a try.

Amanda sipped her coffee. Well, that’s very brave of you. My name is Amanda. Joann chuckled, but Amanda had no idea why. So, why have you moved to Charlotte?

Joann placed her mug of tea on the table. I moved for a job that I start on Monday. I take it you live around here?

Sort of. I live just outside the beltway. I had some time to kill, so I stopped here.

I’m glad you did. Joann’s pleasant smile and welcoming tone encouraged conversation, and the two ended up talking for over an hour. It was only when Amanda realized the time, they had to end their impromptu session and part ways. The two exchanged emails and IM addresses and said that they would talk more. All the way home Amanda was reflecting on their talk and how unusual it was for someone to just strike up a conversation in that way. There was also something she couldn’t put her finger on about her new friend.

Over the next weeks, the pair talked online several times and had met for lunch or coffee more than once. The chemistry between them was palpable. It was only after nearly four weeks that Amanda thought she had discovered the secret. Walking into the coffee place she frequented, she spotted a thin man sitting at her traditional table. He was handsome, well dressed and oddly familiar. After getting her latte, Amanda took a seat a few tables away from the man but facing him. Was it someone she had worked with? Maybe he was an old schoolmate? She couldn’t figure it out, but she felt she knew him for sure. He hadn’t looked up for several minutes. When he did, the look on his face was a mix of surprise and horror. He gathered up his things and scurried from the shop. Amanda watched as he hurriedly left while trying his best to not look at her.

Amanda was expecting to see Joann online that evening. They had planned to chat via Skype at nine. By nine thirty, Amanda gave up. As she stepped away from her computer, an instant message popped up.

Hi, Amanda. Sorry, I missed you but I got busy and time slipped by me. Talk tomorrow! Amanda was going to respond, but she saw that the Joann is online icon wasn’t green any longer meaning she had logged out. Amanda thought it odd but not so odd that it caused any worry. She showered and prepared for bed. Michael knew about Joann but had not met her. He accepted that his wife had her friends just as he had his. As they lay in bed, he could see something was bothering her.

    What’s up?

She shifted and rolled towards him before answering. Ya know my friend, Joann? Well, we were supposed to chat this evening, but she wasn’t there.

Got stood up for a date, huh? That’s tough.

Amanda placed a cold hand on his side, and he twitched and wiggled out of her reach. No silly! I mean it was just weird. She hasn’t missed an appointment yet. I guess I’m reading too much into it. But it was weird.

Michael moved back closer. Well, I’m sure she will catch up with you tomorrow.

Amanda shrugged and rolled over to turn out the light.

The next day the two were supposed to get together and go shopping. Amanda had promised to take her to where she had bought the blouse that got Joann’s attention the first time they had spoken. Arriving at the mall, she saw her waiting near the front doors and smiled as she walked towards her. The thing that she had grown accustomed to seeing were the leering glances her new friend got from the men that passed by. She was very pretty. Standing a little over five feet ten with long chestnut brown hair, blue eyes, and even she had to admit, a great rack and butt. She got a lot of looks. The two hugged their greeting and began wandering through the mall. Having stopped in a few stores and made more than a few purchases, the two friends stopped in the food court for a rest and a drink.

I’m sorry I missed you last night. Joann acted as if there was more she wanted to say but was hesitant.

Her friend smiled. It’s okay. I was just a little worried about you, though. I mean, it was unusual for you to stand me up. She punctuated her words with a laugh.

Oh, honey, I would never stand you up! I just had some other stuff to work out.

The pair had gotten surprisingly close in the short time they had known each other. They had discussed everything it seemed, even some rather private details about each other’s sex lives. Amanda had spoken of her adventures both before and since Michael came into her life and her friend had shared a few details of her own. Balanced against each other, Joann was much more adventurous. She had even gone so far as to admit one of the reasons she had spoken to Amanda on that first day was that she found her extremely attractive and sexy. That caused her to blush and ask if she was often attracted to other women. Joann had answered in a distinctly elusive way, and she dropped it. The two chatted a bit more before heading towards the exit.

Along the way, Amanda spotted the lingerie store and motioned for her friend to follow. Inside, she picked out a couple of bra and panty sets she had been wanting and went to try them on. She encouraged her friend to find something nice and try it on as well. You deserve a treat too! she said as she closed the slatted wooden door behind her. She peeked through the slats to see if her friend was still standing there. Spotting her shoes, she spoke through the door.

Is there anyone else out there, Jo?

    No. Just me. Why?

I need your opinion. She cracked the door of the changing room and motioned for her friend to step closer. Looking inside, Joann could see her friend standing nude except for a sheer white bra and matching panty. She was stunning.

Um, you look great. I mean really hot.

Amanda noticed that her friend was almost awkward in her opinions and barely made eye contact. She thought it funny and cute. She remembered that Joann had admitted to being attracted to her, at least at first, so she decided to be a little playful.

Okay, let me change into the other one. She closed the door and changed quickly before cracking the door and showing it to her friend. The ensemble was red, lacy and as see-through as the first. Her reaction was very much the same. Almost stammering she said that her friend looked amazing and hot and again, she could barely make eye contact. Amanda was amused and flattered. She redressed and stepped into the waiting area with the two sets.

Well, based on your reaction, I think I should get these. Her friend nodded. Did you pick anything out to try on?

No. I have enough undies. Joann moved towards the registers quickly almost seeming to try to escape the current conversation. Amanda followed.

After making her purchases, Amanda went out to the mall to find her friend sitting on a bench. She sat beside her.

Joann immediately spoke. I’m sorry for how I acted in there.

    She chuckled. It’s all right.

No. It wasn’t all right. I reacted the way I did because . . .

She was concerned for her friend. Her voice had caught in her throat as if to stop her from some admission. What is it, hun?

Her friend drew a breath. Amanda, I have a secret to tell you.

She guessed what the secret was. I know Joann.

She looked shocked. How could you know?

Amanda chuckled. You told me that you were attracted to me from the first day we met. Then I go stand nearly naked and ask you an opinion. That wasn’t very fair of me.

She smiled but didn’t agree. Amanda, that isn’t it. Well, it is, but only sort of. I mean, I am attracted to you, but that’s not really the secret. Her stumbling and stammering would have been amusing had it not generated such concern in her friend.

    What is it, Jo?

Can we go somewhere more private to talk?

The two women sat in the front seat of Amanda’s Mercedes parked at the back of the mall parking lot.

Is this private enough? Joann had only relaxed slightly. She spoke quietly and in measured tones.

Amanda, I do have a secret. It isn’t that I find you attractive, you already know that. And it isn’t that I think your husband is really handsome. That had been a discussion a couple of weeks earlier.

Then what is it? She looked as if she was searching for the words, any words that might fit what she wanted to tell her friend.

    I am . . . She paused and drew a deep breath. I am a man.

    There was silence.

She stared at her friend. Her blue eyes, long lashes, perfectly made-up face, flawless coiffeur, and then there were her . . . tits. Nice, full round bosoms that were almost always prominently displayed in a deeply cut sweater or blouse. There was absolutely no way that those were fake. Even a fat guy can’t push together enough man-boobs to make a rack like that.

Say something. She had a pleading tone.

I . . . I don’t know what to say. You’re joking, right? She looked at her friend hoping to see a big smile to let on that this was some kind of practical joke.

No, Amanda, I’m not joking. I know this is hard to understand, but it’s true.

    But . . . but you have . . . tits!

Joann giggled. Yes. Yes, I do, and they cost a pretty penny too.

She was still trying to figure this all out in her head and after a minute chose to stop trying. Okay, explain. I mean really explain because I’m not getting this.

Joann was relieved that her friend was willing to listen and give her a chance to offer that explanation. All right, where to begin?

Amanda interrupted. How about your boobs? That’s a good place to start.

Joann looked down at her own cleavage and agreed. I got my first boob job about five years ago. I have had another one since then.

Her friend just nodded to encourage her to continue.

It’s like this. When I was growing up, I never felt like a boy. But I also didn’t really feel like a girl. By the time I was about sixteen or seventeen I came to the understanding that I was truly bi-sexual. I was attracted to both men and women. I tried relationships with both, some successful others not so much but one thing that was always good was the sex. I liked sex with both genders. Well as I got into my early twenties, I started to experiment a little. Experimenting with being bisexual wasn’t enough?"

Joann stopped at her comment. She made an apologetic face and continued, I experimented with the fact that I tried cross-dressing. I started going out to clubs dressed as a woman. I found out quickly that I really liked it. I like the fashion and the ritual. I liked how it made me feel, and I liked how other people reacted to me. I got very good at it. I’ve always been thin and never had much of an Adam’s apple, so it was pretty easy to pass as female. After a time I decided that this was how I wanted to be. So I got electrolysis to get rid of my facial hair and started dressing as a woman full time. The next step was to get my chest done. I did that because I liked how it looked. I like how it made me feel, and I really liked the reactions I got.

Amanda blurted out the obvious question. So, are you transitioning to become a woman?

Joann chuckled. Don’t you mean, do I still have my other parts?

Well, yeah. I guess that’s what I’m asking.

"Yes. I’m not going through a sex change. I do feel that deep
