    **CHAPTER 1**

    H ayley?

    My eyes popped open with intensity, my heart skipping a beat.

    ...Nice of you to rejoin the waking world. I’ll go ahead and assume you didn’t hear the question then? snarked Professor Sawyer, dripping with sarcasm. I mustered up as much energy as I could to craft a response worthy of his high standards.

    ...no. Sorry.

    That went well.

    Maybe invest in some coffee? Or some of those energy drinks the kids are all into? They may damage your kidneys or liver or whatever, but at least your brain will get some much-needed stimulus, he shot back, ever the comedian. A decent chunk of the class giggled quietly. I turned my head and saw a couple other students pointing and whispering.

    I’m making a great impression so far.

    Yeah... sure.

    And that was it. I did my time. A spectacle was made of my inattentiveness. Back to sleep. I’m sure the lesson wasn’t all that important anyway.

    I know I’m coming off like some sort of edgy rebel. Couldn’t be further from the truth. At least, if you ask me. It’s more a lack of passion than anything else. I’m 19 and repeating my senior year of high school. Forgive me if I’m not overly excited. This isn’t really the life plan I had for myself. Of course, when I was a kid, I used to ramble on about how I was going to grow up to be a cowgirl, so it’s not like that was ever going to pan out anyway. Do cowgirls even exist anymore?

    Yeah, 19 and still in high school. I know, it reeks of success and ambition. I try not to blame myself too much. With a dad that does nothing but move around from job to job, I never really had a chance to begin with. Friends are hard to make, the ones I do make are hard to keep when I peace out a few months later, lesson plans are difficult to follow when schools keep changing. I have every excuse in the book, but the truth is I just gave up at some point. Stopped trying so hard. Stopped trying to fit in, pumped the brakes on developing goals, and started simply going through the motions. Let life throw whatever it wanted to on my
