ABOUT THIS BOOK

It was Sunday morning in Franklin, Tennessee, and like so many in this small town, I was in church with my family. It was a Sunday on which I was not leading worship in another part of the country, a Sunday to rest with my own church family. So, this Sunday at Church of the City was already special. But what I didn’t know as we sang the opening songs of praise was that this service would transform and deepen my understanding of praise and worship. It would change the way I led worship from that day forward.

That morning, my friend and pastor Darren Whitehead shared a message entitled The Seven Words of Praise. It was a message that explained the different words the ancient Hebrew people used to express their praise to God. I was stirred by the depth of the expression of praise embodied by God’s people. I kept thinking to myself, I’ve been leading worship and writing songs for over twenty years. How have I never heard this before now? This was a game changer for me.

Darren closed the sermon and said, This will be your first time to experience worship with all this new knowledge. He smiled and held his hands out wide. Make the most of it.

I was overcome as the music began to play, and if the response of the congregation was any indication, they were too. There was a palpable difference in the congregation’s expression of worship after Darren’s message, and it made the experience all the more overwhelming. A new sense of what it meant to praise God had taken hold; there was no turning back.

I may have waited an hour after the service before blowing up Darren’s phone. I texted him, Your message this morning was amazing. Everyone needs to know about the seven words of praise. It needs to be everywhere. Maybe even a book!

It was the text message that would lead us to writing this book, Holy Roar: 7 Words That Will Change the Way You Worship.

This book is meant to deepen our collective understanding and experience of praise and worship. In each chapter, Darren helps us understand one of the Hebrew words for praise and invites us into that particular praise practice. After Darren’s invitation, I’ll share the story of a song I’ve written or recorded and how it relates to that particular word. We’ll close each chapter with scriptures and reflection questions designed to lead you and your small group into a time of contemplation and discussion.

INTRODUCTION

I grew up in a rural town in South Australia, where I attended a small country church. The Christian tradition of my youth was not a particularly animated tribe. We were reserved, more conservative in the way we expressed ourselves in praise and worship. On any given Sunday, as we were led in traditional hymns (with a smattering of worship choruses), we’d sing along with sincere but subdued hearts. This is not to say, of course, that celebration wasn’t happening in the pews, but the assumption was that any sort of celebration was personal, internal.
