    THE ILLNESS

I looked up into the cloudy grey sky with the rain pouring down to the ground wishing I could stop working in this rain. I felt the wheezing in my chest with every breath I took holding my chest with my free hand feeling my headache pounding in my temples. I felt a sneeze coming waiting for the bucket to move out of the way.

I pulled the bucket out of the ditch with nothing but mud and water doing my best not to collapse the walls of the ditch back in. Each pass I made caused the mud to slide back into the ditch aggravating me. I swiped three more buckets of mud and water out, only to have the walls collapse even more inside the ditch. I got more and more aggravated watching Keith and Dustin get what they could out with their shovels before I made another pass.

I helped Keith shovel out the mud as fast as I could before the bucket knocks my head off. I watched Keith lean against the handle of his shovel not looking very good. I got worried as Keith’s face became white with every minute he spent standing in the pouring rain. I got more concerned for him when I saw him hold his chest looking as if he is having a hard time breathing. I was just about to ask him if he is okay when the bucket got into my view of him.

I stepped closer to the ditch trying to keep my balance from the dizziness over powering me. I sneezed a few times causing me to loose my balance on the muddy bank and fell into the ditch. I looked up in time to see the bucket swing closer to where I laid in the muddy water. Just before the bucket could hit me in the head, a cold wet hand grabbed me by my collar yanking me out of the ditch fast. I gave Dustin a weak smile glad he was close enough to save me.

I smiled back at Keith happy I was there to get him out before the bucket crushed him. I looked into the cab of the backhoe giving my boss, Mark Barkelson the okay sign and got out of the way. I kept one watchful eye on Keith making sure he doesn’t fall back in the ditch again.

I did one more pass with the bucket only to have the banks fall back in before I can move the bucket out. Fed up with this rain, I shut the motor off and got out of my seat half soaked and cold. I jumped down to the muddy watery ground and walked around my machine pissed off.

Dustin and I stopped looking in the ditch when we heard the motor to the backhoe become completely quiet and watched Mark walk into the office not looking too happy. Most likely because of all this rain. Dustin took my shovel from me and tossed both of them in the back of the small dump truck. I followed slowly behind him walking towards the office to get out of the rain too. Once inside, I leaned against my desk pinching the bridge of my nose feeling my pulse throbbing in my sinuses. I heard Dustin grab a chair by a wall and sit down looking very wet, sore and just as muddy as the rest of us.

I took off my rain coat swearing out loud about this freaking weather. I looked at Dustin and Keith ready to give the both of them the news they probably been waiting for since the rain started four hours ago. I leaned against my desk telling them the news. Well, guys. It’s pretty obvious this rain isn’t going to let up any time soon. There’s no way we are going to get that pipe in today! It’s time we… .

I sneezed cutting Mark off from what he was about to say. I saw Mark and Dustin staring at me looking very worried. I smiled at them to reassure them that I will be fine. I’m okay, guys. I just feel like crap. I don’t mind leaving early. I want to go home anyway. Then I began to cough pretty hard.

Go home and get a lot of rest over the weekend, Keith. We got to wait for the rain to stop before we can finish this job. I’ll see you guys on Monday.

I shook my head in agreement standing up still watching Keith. I put the chair back and walked over to the time clock punching out. I waved good bye to the guys but they weren’t even looking so I got my keys out of my pocket and walked out the office door into the pouring rain, running to my truck, relieved that Mark shut the job down until Monday. I got into my truck slamming the door shut putting my key into the ignition and turned the key. I fixed the heater to go full blast and drove off for home.

I stared at Keith’s white face sitting at my desk with papers in front of me. I turned to look behind me ready to blurt out a question at Dustin but I saw him drive by the office window. I looked back at Keith watching him lean against his desk still pinching the bridge of his nose. It looked to me like he’s fast asleep standing up. I slowly got out of my chair and walked to him pretty sure he will be out for longer than three days. I stood beside him watching his chest move every time he took a ragged breath. I spoke to him a few times with no response from him so I put my cold hand on his shoulder causing him to jump. Why don’t you go home, Keith. You look worse than you did before. Keith looked at me shaking his head and slowly walked to the time clock punching out and walked even slower out of the office. I’ll see you on Monday. If your feeling better. Give me a call if your not coming in, okay? I watched Keith wave his hand and walk out into the pouring rain.

I walked inside sneezing my head off while I shut the front door. My wife, Kelly was doing a crossword puzzle sitting in her usual chair. She looked up when I shut the door. Your home early, honey. I sneezed and coughed walking further into the living room Yeah. I caught this being in the rain for most of the freaking day. She set her puzzle book aside and got up. I’ll be right back, honey. I sat down in my chair watching Kelly leave the room going into the bathroom. I took off my boots and socks setting them next to my chair then I reclined back. Kelly came back out carrying a blanket and two bottles of medication with a box of tissues. I watched her set all the stuff on the table next to me. She unfolded the blanket and covered me up from under my chin to my feet. Thanks, hon.

I felt instantly warm when she disappeared into the kitchen. When she came back, she had a glass of water and a teaspoon. I watched her shake the bottle of cough syrup as I took two aspirins she handed me. She had the cough syrup on the spoon after I set the glass on the table next to me. Open wide! I drank down the cough syrup feeling the syrup warm up my throat and chest making a face as I swallowed it down. This stuff tastes terrible! Kelly laughed a little at me. I know it does but you need to take it. I’ll wake you up when it’s time for lunch, okay? She tucked the blanket around my shoulders and under my chin kissing me on my forehead. I looked up at her smiling. Okay. Kelly sat back in her chair and started on her puzzle again.

My eyes began to get heavy trying to stay awake. I could feel the medication working. I smiled at Kelly again as she did her crossword puzzle sitting across from me wondering how I got so lucky to have her in my life. I finally stopped fighting the medication and closed my eyes. Slowly, I began to dream… .

I awoke to the sounds of a dog barking far in the distance. I looked around the living room listening to the emptiness of the house thinking Kelly must have left me in my chair to sleep when she went to bed. I uncovered my arms rubbing the sleep out of my eyes. I glanced at the end table turning the lamp on so I could see my glass of water. But that’s not what I saw. There were five empty beer bottles and a plate with dried on food stuck onto it. A fork was placed on top of the plate but there was no glass of water or my medication on the table anywhere. I stared at the empty bottles wondering when did I drink those? I turned the television on flipping through the channels finding nothing to watch still wondering if I drank those beers on top of my medication before I fell asleep. I still felt confused thinking about it when the phone rang. I got up to look on the caller I.D. seeing it was my son, John. I picked up the phone and answered it before the machine came on. Hello?

Hey, dad! How are you doing?

    I’m doing okay.

Are you sure? You don’t sound it.

I was just watching the television, that’s all.

Oh, okay. I’ll let you go so you can watch your program. I just wanted to check on you. I’ll see you in the morning, dad. Okay. Good night, John.

    Good night, dad.

I heard John hang up and I put the phone back on the cradle looking at the table by my chair. I still just can’t remember drinking those five beers or eating anything! I searched my mind trying to remember but I just couldn’t. I walked to the open window feeling the warm summer breeze on my face staring out at the full moon still not remembering anything. I turned away from the window and walked to the table to clean up the mess.

I walked into the kitchen putting the dirty dishes in the sink and put the bottles in the beer box by the stove. I stared at all the dishes left in the sink undone. I rubbed my forehead trying to remember when I dirtied so many dishes. I drew a blank! I leaned up against the sink looking at the garbage can overflowing with garbage onto the floor. I know Kelly would never leave such a mess behind.

I walked back in the living room with my hand on my hip rubbing my forehead trying so hard to remember. Nothing came to me as I thought about it. I had no memory of doing anything. I sat in my chair covering up again to get the chill out of my body I felt the moment I saw the mess in the kitchen. I picked up the remote and started to flip through the channels. I settled on watching an old movie. As I watched it, my eyes began to droop. I moved around forcing myself to stay awake. I didn’t want to go back to sleep, afraid to sleep. I covered my arms and got comfortable under the blanket. I moved around once in a while just to keep from falling asleep. I yawned every few minutes getting tired. I couldn’t keep my eyes open any longer. I yawned once more settling down. My eyes got heavier and heavier as I watched the old movie.

I awoke with a jolt. My head ached as if I drank most of the night. I sat up listening but I didn’t hear a thing. I glanced at the television seeing it was on the same channel when I fell back to sleep. I looked around the room for no apparent reason only to be startled looking towards the picture window. I saw quite a few empty beer bottles on the other end table with an ashtray full of cigarette butts. A crushed empty cigarette box laid next to it. I stared at the table in shock thinking. I turned my head away from that table to look at my own. My table was also full of empty beer bottles. I spoke out loud to myself. I didn’t have a party… did I? I uncovered myself still staring at all the bottles scattered on the table feeling a little scared. I got out of my chair and walked slowly over to the other end table. I stood there trying to remember if I had a party but my mind was totally blank. I closed my eyes hoping to get a mental picture of why these bottles were on the tables but nothing came to me. I spoke out loud to myself again feeling a little angry and scared. Why can’t I remember!? In frustration, I picked up the mess on both tables and headed for the kitchen.

Just as I entered the kitchen, I almost dropped everything out of my arms and hands. The table was covered! Some dried up left over snacks were on two different plates. A bigger ashtray was full of cigarette butts. Empty beer bottles were scattered on the table, the counter by the sink and on the stove. I looked around in disbelieve thinking, I am loosing my mind. I almost cried trying so damn hard to remember! My mind was still totally blank thinking of what happened here while I slept. I quickly started to clean up the mess in anger at myself for not remembering. I put all the bottles back in their cases. I had to empty a few bottles that still had beer in them. I stacked all the full cases neatly by the stove. I emptied the ashtray into the garbage along with the plates of dried up snacks. I washed all the dirty dishes and wiped up the messes on the counter, the table and the stove. Satisfied the kitchen was clean enough, I threw the dish cloth in the sink and walked out of the kitchen.

I got comfortable under the blanket watching an older movie. I looked around the living room putting a mental picture of the clean room in my mind hoping the next time I wake up it will be the way it is now. I rubbed my temples from the headache I woke up with wishing it would just go away. Slowly, I started to fall asleep. I didn’t want to sleep afraid of what I would wake up to next. My eyes got heavier and heavier as I forced myself to stay awake. Sleep was destined to take over me from being so tired. I closed my eyes letting sleep over power me. I once again was in a deep sleep.

I awoke to the sound of my front door closing. I laid there afraid to open my eyes and see who would be standing before me. I slowly opened my eyes a slit seeing my son, John standing at the kitchen table opening a Mc Donald’s bag. I closed my eyes being tired from the memory loss I had during the night. Before I opened my eyes again, I heard John talking to me. Come on! Wake up! It’s time! I felt his hand on my shoulder shaking me to wake up. I opened my eyes again looking into John’s face. My eyes got wider as John’s lips moved. His voice began to change. I stared at his lips wide eyed not wanting to look in his face afraid his facial features would begin to change into something other than his own. I stared at him listening to his voice change to a female. I became very scared not moving frozen in my chair in fright. I wanted to just get up and run but my eyes were transfixed on him. The voice I heard kept on repeating the same phrase over and over. I looked into his face wide eyed scared to death of what would happen next… .

I woke up feeling Kelly shaking me hard staring into her beautiful face. Keith! It’s time to wake up! Come on! I slowly focused my eyes feeling very tired seeing Kelly looking at me scared. Kelly?

Yes, honey. It’s me. I want you to eat before your lunch gets cold. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and sat up straighter when Kelly sat a tray on my lap. When your done, I want you to take your medicine, okay? I looked up at her with a smile nodding my head yes to her. I was just so happy I woke up looking into her face and not someone else remembering my dream I just had. Kelly smiled back at me and then went into the kitchen.

I ate my lunch watching Kelly for a few minutes. I looked at my table seeing the medicine bottles, the remote and a box of tissues next to my glass of water. I stared at the stuff on the table remembering everything that happened in my dream. Kelly walked in the room seeing me stare at the table. She walked up to me worried feeling my forehead. Are you okay?

I took a sip of my orange juice before I answered her. I’m okay. I took a bite out of my tuna fish sandwich while Kelly walked over to her chair and sat down. She picked up her puzzle book after she set her glass of soda down. I ate half of my sandwich watching television. I picked up the remote and flipped through the channels. I settled on watching a different movie. I finished eating the rest of my sandwich and ate my chicken noodle soup quick. I drank down the rest of my orange juice in one big gulp. Kelly not taking her eyes off her book heard me set my empty glass down on the table. Did you have enough to eat? I wiped my mouth off with my napkin and put it on the tray. For now. Kelly set her book and pen down and got up. She took the tray off my lap and walked into the kitchen with it. She stood next to me handing me my water. She shook the cough syrup waiting as I took a couple of aspirins. I set the glass down on the table watching her put some cough syrup on a spoon. Open wide! She said with a smile. I drank down the cough syrup making a face.

Now I know why the grand kids wouldn’t take this stuff! It may taste terrible but it will help with your fever.

I sighed heavily. I know. I grabbed a tissue just in time for me to sneeze into it a few times as Kelly went into the kitchen. I heard her cleaning up the lunch mess. I slowly started to fall asleep again listening to the noise from the television and the dishes clanging in the sink. It put me into a deep, deep sleep. That’s when I started to dream… .

I awoke to the sounds of a thunderstorm. I sat up listening feeling the rumble of the thunder after the lightening struck near by. I felt the cool wind and the misty rain on my face looking at the window left open. I got up out of my chair and dropped my blanket on the floor at my feet. I closed the window tight and locked it. I put my hands in my pants pockets staring out the window.

The wind blew hard bending the trees wild every which way. The rain poured down making the road look like a major river. The lights began to flicker but stayed on. The storm became a striking force with the lightening lighting up the sky with the thunder shaking the ground.

The lights began to dim then went out completely. It was pitch dark inside my house as I looked around my living room. I still stood by the window watching the storm pass by. I headed for the kitchen to get myself something to drink. I picked up the flashlight off the top of the refrigerator turning it on to see with and got me a beer out of the frig. I went back into the living room opening my beer tossing the cap on the end table and turned the flashlight off setting it down. I walked back over to the window looking out it as I drank some of my beer.

A flash of light lit up the sky. I saw a man wearing a long grey trench coat with a big grey hat that looked like something Indiana Jones wore in those movies, standing in the middle of the road by my driveway. I slowly walked closer to the window with my beer still in my hand. I looked at the road making sure I wasn’t imagining what I just saw. I took another sip of my beer waiting for the sky to light up the road again. Which I didn’t have to wait for very long.

A flash of light lit up the sky as the lightening struck making the thunder rumble. The man was now standing in the middle of my driveway with his arms at his sides looking down at the ground. I swallowed hard as my heart began to pound. Sweat beaded my forehead and the palms of my hands became clammy watching the man just stand there in the storm out my window. I stepped closer making sure my mind wasn’t playing tricks on me. I waited for another flash of light to see where the man would be standing next praying he was only stranded because of the storm.

A flash from the lightening strike lit up the sky. I looked at the spot I saw the man standing in but he wasn’t there any more. Instead, he was standing at the bottom of my ramp leading to my porch.

The man was staring at me in the darkness with the rain drenching him. I dropped my beer at my feet feeling my heart beating in my throat. I took a step back away from the window automatically feeling scared. The expression on the man’s face scared the hell out of me. He looked so evil like he wanted to kill me! Sweat trickled down my temples. I could barely breath from the pounding of my heart. It was still pouring rain outside with the thunder now becoming a weak rumble with the lightening still lighting up the sky.

I still kept my distance away from the window staring out into the darkness. My throat was dry and my shirt was soaked with sweat. I was in fear to see the strange man standing in front of my window looking at me with those evil eyes. I stood close enough to be able to see the whole driveway and the ramp as I stared out the window. I got nervous waiting and watching not knowing what this stranger really wanted.

A weak flash of light lit up the sky just then. I looked out my window everywhere trying to find the man outside my home but he wasn’t anywhere to be seen. Curiosity got the best of me slowly making me step closer and closer and closer to the window until I could see my own reflection in the glass.

My heart was still beating hard as I waited for a flash of light so I could see outside putting my hands in my pockets to keep them from shaking. I looked everywhere out in my driveway but I didn’t see the strange man anywhere. I peered out at the bottom of my ramp but the man was gone. I prayed the man was stranded and moved else where for help.

I began to relax a little feeling my heart beat slow down to a normal
