It tells of the Brethrens involvement in his love affair and how the family put an end to his marriage because he had slept with his fiance. It outlines his escape from the Brethren while he was working in a large London hospital.
The book is a fascinating account of how other people live, depicting life in a hospital and the main characters work as a district nurse.
