FOWARD
Industrial revolution generated heavy and sundry industrial activities that propelled engineering and complex systems, establishing corporate organizations and institutions that will assist in the management of the contending issues of large scale production, marketing, financing/accounting, administrative expertise, and HSE (health, safety and environment) for sustainable growth. The development in technology and management systems that is felt in modern business practice owe credence to the enormous effort and time spent in building professionals through career processes, who are able to define appropriate majors and mechanisms in all the areas that are capable of industrial sustenance and to man the expected responsibilities involved.
However, if you read in books on the growth of industries and the economy from inception to our modern time, one thing is often too silent in the books that probably would have raised the consciousness of a greater number of people before now, for more than a enough participation and contribution to industry and the economy. I am talking about CAREER and the effect of its consciousness, as all defined processes of industrial growth from beginning to date have gone through career development and management processes. It is these creative aspects of career development that have impacted prolifically on the world’s economic growth, but which only is often highlighted in passing, on pages of books, that has prompted the writing of this book (Career Appreciation). Career management books are hard to come by, though yearned for, for guide and direction of the yearning populace.
When I wrote the first motivational book on career (Career Bridge), which aims at drawing the attention of the readers on career preparedness, I had in mind to write this book (Career Appreciation – For Optimum performance) to build on the awareness by given practical examples that will help the readers embrace their career life with a sense of direction and responsibility. The book marries several management principles with process building technics which may not be directly discussed in management books to show the relationship with career development and management.
The work environment sometimes presents itself quite a difficult place from what is learnt in management books because of the challenges therein that sometimes go beyond the offered solutions prescribed by the books. To carry on as a career individual goes beyond what is experienced in the work place but demands painstaking approaches to having solution on posing challenges. This book (Career Appreciation) acknowledges this fact and proffers the advice that will help a career conscious individual manage his problems and experiences where ever he works. The book also looks at career growth and associated responsibilities that the individual seeking growth must learn and be able to handle by the application of what would be learnt here.
You would have made a long worth journey on your career path when you endeavour to read to the end of this book. Don’t fail to take the benefits home.
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTING CAREER
Today the term ‘career’ is becoming a concern, especially for many organizations because of the need for highly productive and efficient labour in high demand. Many organizations are folding for this single reason as their managers may lack the competencies to run all the applicable resources for success, sometimes where top management is competent, the teaming work force available to it may constitute the problem by their lapses in skills and efficiencies capable of driving the desired ‘Key Performance Indicators’ (KPI’s) to support top management. In most cases organizations are liquidated not because they lacked the required funds but because of the poor management of the funds, even when commensurately available to them. Today, for these stated reasons, organizations have developed career training programs to build or develop her staff to meet with set KPI’s that will drive the goal and objectives for success. Individuals in the labour market should be aware of the fact that they have to endeavor to develop themselves and be made relevant to win job opportunities out there, hence the concern and attention for career.
Students of institutions who spend more than required years of study in school may suffer from this problem because of inappropriate career placing or choice in school. They may have miss out completely in the career they should go for in school. Guiding and counseling has revealed a lot more on career, and has made it possible today for students to plan on their career by first identifying those areas where they have the potentials to excel before choosing a career. Also to assist those who have successfully completed their school program but who do not wish to carry on in life in the accomplished field of study but rather to change for a career of their interest, to achieve success. You have a lot to learn on career as you study on through the chapters of this book.
DEFINING THE TERM ‘CAREER’:
I belief at this point, you may want to know what the term ‘career’ means, since it is so much talked about today. Simply defining, a career is the overall sum of paid and unpaid work, learning and life roles that one may undertake throughout a lifetime. Career was before now associated with paid employment and referred to a single occupation. In today’s world of work, the term ‘career’ is seen as a continuous process of learning and development. I intend to discuss this more elaborately in chapter five below but, let us here see what each individual contribution to career development means to all of us. Contribution to a career can include:
1. Work experience
2. Community involvement
3. Employment
4. Life roles
5. Enterprise activities
6. Cultural activities
7. Training
8. Interests
9. Sports
10. Volunteer work
