As a kid, I would go into this imaginary place. I would have such vivid events in my mind, that they seemed so surreal to me. Even as an adult. When I have to endure life's obstacles and hurdle's. My four cornered room is my head. And I've learned in life to not allow one to rent free space there. It's only for me. What I can say about myself, is that I'm a very giving person. I love the Lord, and I love to make people happy, smile, and laugh. So one can say I have a sense of humor. Even when I feel like crying sometimes. I've always taking on other's problems, and before I know it, they've became mine. I have always been a Diva, or what one might call a shopaholic. But, I believe in Blessing anyone in need. So, I guess I would say that a lot of Carol's character in this book is me.

I would like to take the time to express my very great appreciation to my Daughter. For her valuable and constructive suggestions when I started on this Manuscript in 2004. Her willingness to give her time so generously has been very much appreciated. And last, but not least, for believing in me. When so many others doubted me. I love you so very much.

    Prelude

After her vital signs were okay, Carol started coming around, and the Paramedic asked her some questions about where she was, and her name, she responded while getting up from the sofa. Rodney and the Paramedic assisted her to make sure she was able to stand. Remembering what was happening before she fainted Carol, then ask Joe, whom had made, Client of the week, how was Jake and Tucker?

Joe told her that Tucker had been air-lifted to the hospital, and Jake was transported by ambulance, and he didn’t know their condition. What happen? And why is Ray body still here? Asked Carol. The Detective explain to Carol that the body was not available for recovery, until they did a full investigation of the crime scene, and after that The Medical Examiner’s Office would send a Coroner over to retrieve the body.

Rodney was trying to keep Carol as calm as possible. The Detective in charge question Carol about Ray’s immediate family. Carol, then went into the control room were the clients files were stored to get Ray’s emergency contact information. After answering questions from the Detective. Rickey was under Tucker as for as security. Rickey inform Carol and Rodney that the clients were in their rooms, and wasn’t allowed in the hallways.

Bill Yates, who would have been the speaker for the evening entered the building. He was inquiring about what had happen there. Rodney was speaking to him. In the mean time, I was questioning Joe about what happen? I was in Ms. Mitchell office talking about the interview. We heard an altercation outside, following gunshots. Said Joe. And when Ms. Mitchell saw Mr. Smith on the floor, she kind of lost it. Said Joe. And I don’t know how true it is Mrs. Saulsberry. But, I heard one of the clients told Ray about seeing his girl with a guy earlier, and that pissed him off. Said Joe.

I spoke with Bill, and told my husband we needed to get to the hospital. As the four of us was walking out, I thanked Shasta and Terry for coming out. She inform me that Terry and herself was going to trail us to the hospital as well. In my state of being, I appreciated that. Because this was a time when you needed a friend.

While Rodney and I was riding, I told him what Joe had said about Ray. And it was possible that it was what made him angry. I knew it was a matter of time before that nigga snapped. Said Rodney. Are you okay? Asked Rodney. I just feel like this isn’t really happening. I said. And I don’t want to do this anymore. I said. Rodney held my hand while driving.

As we entered the emergency area, I spotted Valerie Mitchell talking to someone. I hugged her as we were crying. Shasta joined us trying to comfort us both. They didn’t know if Tucker was going to make it through the night. Said Valerie crying.

Rodney and Terry was trying to get some information on their condition. I was sitting down with Valerie and Shasta. Valerie was talking while crying. And my mine just drifted off. I was in a zone wondering how something of this magnitude could happen at a center that I founded, and was so passionate about . . . .

    Chapter 1

    The A.A. Conventinon

It had begun to rain as I headed to The Runway Hotel, located at the airport. I had just left the home of my cousin Cynthia. We met up over to Cynthia’s, to plan our upcoming Family Reunion. I was still feeling the affect from the Margarita’s Cynthia had made. Knowing that only a swallow of alcohol would get me tipsy, I started feeling reluctant about going to the hotel, because I would be among a group of A.A., but after playing Fine China my favorite track, and turning up the volume, there was no turning back.

Exiting off the ramp to the airport, I was getting excited, as I was nearing the hotel. Not only was I looking good in my skinny jeans, and a sexy Donna Karen Sweater. I coordinated my outfit with a pair of Gucci Boots, and a matching handbag. Having had a minor car accident the week before, my convertible was in the shop being repaired, so I was driving a rental.

There were honks, everywhere outside in front of the entrance. A car was pulling out close to the door, and I was thinking out loud it must be my lucky day, because I was able to get a parking spot right at the door, especially being that it was raining. After lighting a cigarette, I turned the volume down on my music and called Shasta at home, Shasta Green and I had been BFF for over 19 years. She was only 4 months older than myself. Her daughter Keisha was apparently over to her house, because she answered the phone. Hey Auntie, you are jamming, "Said Keisha. I hit the mute button on the volume, I spoke to Keisha, and we exchange some small talk before her mom picked up an extension. I got it Keisha, said Shasta. You all must be getting out? Asked Keisha. Bye Auntie I love you. Said Keisha. I love you more. I said.

What’s up girl? Said Shasta. Blowing out the smoke from my cigarette, I answered, what’s up is all these fine ass honks I’m looking at, The Lord Is My Shepherd, and I see what I want. Bitch you are crazy, said Shasta. Are you coming to pick me up? Asked Shasta. Why hell no, I said. I came by your house before going to the reunion meeting at my cousins, and you wasn’t ready, I said. Now what did you say was going on there again? Asked Shasta. Okay You remember when Lavell got into that trouble about two years ago selling pills, well he started The Drug Court Program, and I would sometime drop him off to his meetings, which were mandatory, and the people were there because they got busted for selling drugs, or they were users, or they were alcoholics. And my son know I love to play bid wiz, and one day I dropped him off and he said, Mom, I bet I can beat you playing bid wiz, because that was all they did there before meetings, and played dominoes. Anyway, one day I went inside, and the Law Firm I work at is about two miles from it, and every chance I get, I’ve been hanging out every sense, I said.

This is a Convention for all the AA’s all over the United States. They do this once a year, I said. Bill Yates is the hotel manager here, I met him at the facility through Lavell, but I’ve never played with him, I said. He told me about the Convention last week, and I was welcome to come by, and there will be plenty of wiz playing and good food, I said. Is he married? Asked Shasta. I don’t know if that man is married or not, I said. Are you coming or not? I asked. If you are not coming to pick me up, I’m staying in, said Shasta. Well, I’ll just party for both of us, I said.

I entered the lobby of the hotel, and thinking to myself, I should have brought some handcuffs with me, it was fine honks everywhere. I hadn’t seen any familiar faces yet. As I did my modeling strut through the lobby, of course all eyes were on me. Men were winking and blinking. Finally I see a familiar face. Bill walked toward me and said, Hello Lavell’s Mother, I’m glad you could make it. Said Bill.

I could tell he was so mesmerize by me that he didn’t hear my question. I asked him again, was there any wiz playing going on? He then told me that they were playing in room 212. I thanked him and headed toward the elevator.

On the elevator I blew a sigh of relief, and I was hoping Bill didn’t notice I had been drinking, even though I had used some breath mints before leaving my truck. My feet was beginning to hurt, Oh God, what we women have to go through to look beautiful. The elevator door open, and I stepped out hoping that 212 was close, and looking at the room numbers, I had a long walk with 5" heel’s on. Hearing a lot of noise I knew I was getting closer.

It wasn’t hard to find the room because the door was wide open. As I entered the room I notice empty food trays, used paper plates and cups everywhere, and guy’s very loud playing dominos. I spoke to everyone, not seeing any familiar faces. Knowing that wasn’t my cup of tea I said my good byes and headed back to the elevator. My bladder needed some attention, so as I went into the Ladies Room in the lobby I notice so much love among so many people. As I was finishing emptying my bladder, I was washing my hands, it was quite a few ladies in the wash area talking and hugging one another.

A white female introduce herself as Roxie, and told me she was from Las Vegas, and I said wow, I told her I was a Paralegal at Waverly Law Firm down town, and how I came to the Convention to play cards. Roxie wasn’t letting me off so easy. She took me through another part of the hotel and introduce me to other’s that were from St. Louis, Texas, CA, Bloomington, IN.

We continued to engage in conversation and exchange Business Cards, and I was so amazed of so many people from all over U.S. showing so much love to one another. Everyone seem so happy and full of love. Roxie told me that they were able to bring their kids, and the activities the kids had, and I thought it was amazing. We said our goodbyes, and promise to keep in touch.

I was getting ready to leave walking toward the entrance. There was Bill again, you are not leaving this soon? Asked Bill. I told him that I was tired, but I enjoyed myself. And you guys do this every year? I asked. Sense 1992, said Bill.

Bill walked me out to my truck. Most hotels have a non-smoking policy, as I was reaching for a cigarette Bill took it out of my hand, these are not good for you, said Bill. Laughing as I said, I know I need to quit, but I just desire them, I said. Not being blunt, but what is your story? How did you become involved with the center? I asked.

My choice of drugs was crack cocaine, and I was busted for five kilo’s, I did my time. And by the way we haven’t been properly introduce, said Bill. My name is Bill Yates, and I’m an addict that has been sober for 19 years this coming January. I lost my family during my binges, and I hurt a lot of people that loved me more than I was loving myself, Said Bill. When I was released I finished College and got my Associates Degree in Business Administration. And I’ve been in the Hotel Business for the last 10 years, said Bill.

How are these events funded? I asked. Well the AA have always been a non-profit organization, said Bill. For events like this one, we raise money every year just for this one weekend out of a year, said Bill. And of course we have private donors. And a lot of us contribute to ones that can’t afford the trip, said Bill. So you are a Paralegal at the Waverly Law Firm. Said Bill. And how long have you been in that line of work? Asked Bill. Laughing, They charged you an arm and a leg to just sit and talk with you there. Said Bill. Our retainers are very expensive, but wouldn’t you want someone to represent you that can get the job done. I said. I’ve learned in this business especially dealing with Criminal Law, it’s all about who have the most clout. I said. Yeah that’s true, as long as you don’t break the bank in the process. Said Bill.

Well I’m going to go, and I really enjoyed myself. I said. We enjoyed having you, and I always enjoy looking at a beautiful woman. Said Bill. I thank you for the compliment. I said. When are you coming to the facility again? Asked Bill. I don’t know just yet, but maybe one day this week. I said. Here, take one of my cards, and you know you can call me anytime, you might need some hotel accommodations. Said Bill. I might just take you up on that for our up-coming Family Reunion. I said.

When is it? Asked Bill. We had our first meeting tonight, I was elected to be the Chairmen. I said. Well they picked the best person for the job. Said Bill. And I thank you again, this one is going to be hard for me because my Mother passed a few weeks ago. I said. That’s right Lavell told me he had lost his Grandmother. Said Bill. I was sorry to hear of that, especially a sudden death, Said Bill. Yeah we didn’t see that coming, because she hadn’t been sick or anything, she just went to bed one night and didn’t wake up. I said. They call that a Holy Death. Said Bill. And that, she was. I said. Okay we’ll talk again, and I’m serious about the Hotel, we set the date for the first weekend in July of next year. I said. So I will call you and get some prices in a couple of weeks okay. I said. That will be fine, and you be safe. Said Bill.

I could date him, Carol was thinking out loud. Ooh… he is so good looking to me. But I couldn’t because I met him through Lavell, but the wishful thinking was great, knowing I didn’t want anyone but Rodney, even though I gave him a Chinese name One Gong. Smiling, I lit a cigarette and pulled off the lot.

    Chapter 2

    The Visit

Ringing of the phone had awaken me out of a deep sleep. The talking caller I.D. it was Shasta. Wake your ass up, said Shasta. How was the party last night? Asked Shasta. It wasn’t really a party, I said. It was more like a reunion or something for the A.A., I said. I didn’t get a chance to play cards, they were playing dominos instead. I said. But I got to really meet this guy name Bill, he is the Hotel Manager there, and I must say he’s very easy on the eyes. I said. My social life is such a mess right now, that I wouldn’t bring anyone new into my world. I said. Well at least he’s not another Rodney, that’s right it’s Rodney visitation today. Said Shasta. Omg, What time is it? I asked. It is 11:00 a.m. said Shasta. Girl, let me get up from here and jump into the shower. I said. Well, I’m not going to hold you, I’ll get back with you later, and give me a hollow when you get back. Said Shasta. Okay, hang up. I said.

I finish showering and put on a fitted Red Suit, knowing that my intentions were to make Rodney wish that he was on the other side of that glass. Carol thinking out loud.

Being a Legal Assistant allowed me to bypass the waiting area at the Jail. I pulled up in the parking lot down town at 90 Poplar, I got out of my truck, and I had to turn back around to leave my handbag inside to keep from dealing with those lockers. I stood in line to go through screening. Once I go to the window and show my Court Badge, they allow me to go to the elevators to the visiting area. While I was in the booth waiting for Rodney to come out. I started reminiscing about the night before. It was so cool watching all those people from different states under the same roof, and showing love for one another. Everyone was so friendly. Now that’s how it should be. I was thinking out loud while unbuttoning the top of my suit coat, to show my shimmering chest, I position myself in the chair, so that Rodney could see my thighs when he came out.

Slyly looking up, I could see that Rodney was at the door awaiting for the guard to let him in. The door open and another inmate peeked in, to obviously take a look at me. A smiling Rodney came through the door. I picked the phone up, and him as well. He started commenting on how beautiful, and sexy the lady in red looked. I took control of the conversation, and asked about his up-coming court date. We begin to hear noise from the people visiting in the next booth. I stood up as if I was trying to see what was going on, and knowing he was watching my every move. I sat back in the chair knowing in my devious mind, I intended that move on purpose too aroused him.

You are wrong for that Carol. Said Rodney. You need to cut that shit out. Said Rodney. What? I asked. Acting as if I didn’t know what he meant. Stop teasing the hell out of me. Said Rodney. Oh, I’m sorry baby. I said. Yeah, right. Said Rodney.

We both got into some deep conversation touching bases on a lot of issues, and Rodney’s time was
