Heather Nelson lives with her family on a farm in the foothills of majestic Mount Hood, Oregon, near the location where this story took place. This novel is based on true adventures during her first summer with horses. While writing this novel, Heather rescued several starving horses--and continues to fill her life caring for horses. She has written many stories for children, and has two published books: The First Summer with Horses (for the teen reader); and Daisy the Protector Dog (for young children). Her good friend, Candace Diehl, who shared the adventures described in this novel, is the illustrator. Candace lives with her family on a farm in Oregon. She is an avid artist and gardener, and uses her property to assists animals in need. “The First Summer with Horses is a story that needs to be shared, and I am pleased to help bring the adventure to life through the illustrations.”
