This novel is based on true adventures during her first summer with horses. While writing this novel, Heather rescued several starving horses--and continues to fill her life caring for horses. She has written many stories for children, and has two published books: The First Summer with Horses (for the teen reader); and Daisy the Protector Dog (for young children).
Her good friend, Candace Diehl, who shared the adventures described in this novel, is the illustrator. Candace lives with her family on a farm in Oregon.
