Faye Callahan

In 1954 Faye Callahan fulfilled her desire to become a schoolteacher and came to a little town in Georgia called Hoboken. Even as a little girl she would line up her dolls and the little kids in the neighborhood and “teach” school. She attended Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Georgia, and received a bachelor of arts in education and a master’s in education from Georgia Southern College, Statesboro, Georgia. She has always felt that the Lord had placed a calling upon her to teach, and her greatest joy is to teach the word of God. She has been a Sunday-school teacher for sixty-two years, teaching every age group, from nursery to adult classes. She now teaches an adult class at Kettle Creek Church in Waycross, Georgia. She tells everyone her next promotion will be to heaven. Her greatest joy is to study the word of God and to present it so that it will be understood and that others will find strength and courage to live for the Lord. As she studied, she would write down her thoughts and findings. Many times later she would be called upon to speak and would draw from these writings. The purpose of this book is to encourage others with their life’s experiences and to know the promises of the Bible are for each child of God. It is her desire that someone will find the courage to go on when life is at its lowest and that God’s word holds all the answers we need to life’s problems.

    Preface

    image_250.jpg

Over the years Faye has had occasions to speak before groups. In Bible College, students were called on to give the devotions at the assembly we had each morning. She would always know when her time was coming, because God would begin moving in her spirit with a message.

Faye has always enjoyed reading and studying the Word of God.

The first part of this book is a collection of some of the studies she has done over the years. It is Faye’s desire that in someway these will be a blessing. The second part of the book is about going through an illness and the grieving period after the death of a loved one. She feels so many people do this every year and it is her desire that is someway this will help someone cope with it.

I would like to thank God for the opportunity to write this book. Without the encouragement of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, I would never have completed it.

I would also like to thank my nephew, W. C. Parnell, for all his help in proofing it. I am grateful that he was willing to take the time to do this for me.

I would also like to thank my family, my many friends and my church family for their prayers, love, and support as I worked on this project.

    Part I

    . . . Mount Up with Wings…

    Isaiah 40:31

    Introduction

    image_250.jpg

Through the years there have been times when I have spoken before my church. Most of the time I would know that I was going to be called upon to speak, because the Lord would begin to implant a message in my heart and I would start working on it before I knew when I was to address my audience.

Part I is a collection of some of those messages. The title, Mount Up with Wings, is taken from Isaiah 40:31 KJV, which reads, But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

I have walked with the Lord for sixty-two years. Sometimes I have even had the strength to run and not grow tired. I have been weak and weary, but I have not fainted. Many times I have had temptations, trials, and problems, some of them of my own making. When I go to the Lord and pray and wait upon Him, He renews my strength and gives me the courage to continue. Then I mount up with wings like an eagle and can travel again.

I hope that you can glean something from these messages to help you in your journey with the Lord. Everything that you have gone through or are now enduring is common to all people. If you are a Christian, you are not alone on the journey. God is faithful. Call upon Him in times of trouble and He will answer.

I am just a simple woman of many years. The Lord has blessed me and kept me throughout this time. He will do the same for you.

All Scripture verses cited are taken from the King James Version of the Bible and the New King James Version unless otherwise noted.

    Chapter 1

    image_250.jpg

    Soar Like an Eagle

It comes to my mind that every time we meet as a congregation, that the odds that the same people will gather any two services are staggeringly small. Someone is not here today; there are new people who come for the first time. The congregation is never exactly the same from one time to next. What a unique and profound responsibility we have to minister under those circumstances! Sometimes we get only one chance to reach a person.

To teach spiritual truths Jesus used parables. He used natural events to teach lessons—a farmer sowing seeds, a prodigal son, and a lost coin. I want to use a bird mentioned in the Bible thirty-two times, the eagle. This majestic bird is an ageless and universal symbol of strength, beauty, authority, and freedom. Christians have used the bird many times in messages and as a lesson for our Christian walk. During my lifetime, I have heard and read many facts about the eagle in my ninth-grade science class. My teacher, an avid fan of the eagle, taught us a many things about the eagle. I want to share some of what I learned.

An eagle’s wings can span up to eight feet from wing tip to wingtip. Its talons are four times stronger than a human’s hand. Eagles have unique physical characteristics uncommon among other birds. They are hatched looking into the sun and with their mouths wide open. They have two sets of eyelids. One is used for hunting while the other is used for flying directly into the sun. They can see for seven miles, which makes them excellent hunters. When pursued, they fly directly into sun, blinding their enemies.
