Out of the Night

Out of the stillness of the night

Came the sound of the night birds trill

It came through the window loud and clear

From the brow of the distant hill.

As I lay there and listened

To his melodious call

The answering trill came in on the wind

Faintly, barely heard at all.

Twas a glorious thing of joy to hear

Such beauty out of sight

It made me know that God was there

In the stillness of the night.

Dorothy Anne Summers

Dorothy Kilgore Pridemore was born in Knott County in the hills of eastern Kentucky. She began writing her poetry after the untimely death of her first son in 1937. Her poetry writing continued as she became the teacher in the one-room schoolhouse near her home. She loved her life as a wife and mother, and she dearly loved God and Nature; they were common topics of her verse, gathered here in The Other Side of Me. Her fondest desire was to have this compilation of her poetry published. Her niece, Dorothy Anne Kilgore-Summers, with the encouragement of her husband, Ralph, is now honoring her Aunt Dorothy’s wish; with the publication of this inspiring poetry collection. She was a very happy lady, and her poems examine the many sides of her life.
