    Foreword

Dr. Gopalakrishna is a multi-facetted person. I don’t know whether he chose himself or was driven to one particular line that he professes now—that of a plastic surgeon. All I know of his job is that apart from attending to repairing facial and other damages caused by accidents, he adds to the perception of people of their own beauty. But that does not exhaust his creativity. In order to satisfy his creative wander-lust he produced a very good volume of poetry in Hindi, Telugu, and Urdu with Roman version too. That way no one is left out. Well, that can be condoned for that is in line with a quest of beauty.

Now he springs a surprise by bringing out a book on Anagrams. Well in case you, like me you don’t know what an anagram is, ask Google. If you don’t have a computer, look up a dictionary. If you don’t even that, let me explain to you. The New Oxford Advanced Leaner’s Dictionary says an Anagram is a word or phrase made by arranging the letters of another word or phrase in a different order. An anagram of ‘Elvis’ is ‘lives’.

So you see that it is a ‘teaser’ game for cerebral people, or those who want to increase their word power. If you play Scrabble or do crosswords this book can be of immense use. You can play in a group or even alone.

While I was writing this, I suddenly started looking at every word that I had written to see if I could make an anagram out of that. So, you leap from a dictionary to a thesaurus to anagram. It seems to be a very addictive pastime.

As in every case of a person seeking further enlightenment, I went to Google.

A whole new world opened up before me. There are lots of books on the subject and even software to let you enter the kingdom of Anagram. Not only words but also phrases can be subjected to anagram. For example take the phrase: ‘The best things in the world are free’. Its anagram will be: ‘Nail-biting refreshes the feet’. Another example is the infamous name: ‘Osama Bin Laden’ which makes the anagram: ‘Dispensed human’.

So shuffle the pages, get absorbed in a new world and thank the good doctor for that. I congratulate the author on his venture and wait to see what new territory he invades next.

    Narendra Luther

    Writer and former civil servant

    Foreword

One of the reasons English is so widely spoken around the world is that it absorbs influences from all the languages it comes into contact with. Many of our most common words and expressions are borrowed from other languages. Words like jungle and shampoo as well as some with a more obvious lineage like juggernaut and curry originate from Indian languages. English is a very versatile language and it is most interesting (and entertaining, I might add) to see what one differently placed letter can do to the meaning of a word. As Dr Gopalakrishna demonstrates; Running after lucre will give you an ulcer and when education is auctioned, teachers become cheaters and naturally, the student becomes stunted. Anagrams are a great means of expressing ideas in a way that they stay with the readers.

Dr. Gopalakrishna’s book on anagrams is the ideal companion to those (like me!) who are cryptic crossword novices. It will help sharpen wit, while avoiding the (much experienced) frustration of early failure. And if you do enjoy a play on words and the humour it brings, this book would help you spot many a joke!

I do hope readers will find this book helpful. I certainly have used it to add spice to my speeches.
