    INTRODUCTION

The Book of The Revelation, the concluding book of the Holy Bible, reveals the great events that bring the history of this present world to a close. The greatest of these events is the Revelation of The Lord Jesus Christ at His Second Advent, or Second Coming. The word revelation, as used for the title of this Scriptural Book, is derived from the Latin revelation, which means disclosure of that which was previously hidden or unknown. The Greek word apokalupsis, from which the English word apocalypse is derived, means essentially the same thing. I believe that The Revelation was written by the beloved Apostle John (under the power and influence of the Holy Spirit) about 95 AD from his exile on the Island of Patmos, where he was sent by Roman law as punishment for preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is the same John who wrote the Gospel and the three Epistles of the New Testament. There are those theologians and others who would disagree with this particular John being the author, and would attribute the writing to another John of notably unknown origin. In the first chapter, verses one and two, the author identifies himself as being a servant of Jesus Christ and one Who bore record (witness) of the Word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all the things that he saw. This is, in my opinion, a very clear description of the Apostle John who wrote of Jesus being the Word made flesh. What other John would qualify as being one who actually witnessed the testimony of Jesus Christ, referring to Him as The Word of God? Additionally, history tells us that the Apostle John was indeed exiled or banished to the Isle of Patmos as the author of The Revelation declared in Revelation 1:9.

The study of the end times of the world is known as Eschatology, derived from the Greek word Eschatos, meaning last and—ology meaning the study of. Eschatology is a vital part of Theology (the study of God and His relation to the world). Theology is also defined as rational interpretation of religious faith, practice, and experience. Any teaching of the Bible as God’s Holy Word would be remiss if not including The Revelation as an integral part of study. Eschatology should be included as regularly and predominantly in one’s study of the Bible as Genesis throughout the Old Testament, as well as any other part of the New Testament, primarily because Eschatology is not limited to the Book of The Revelation, but is included throughout the Bible, and is presented as a dominant theme in many other Old and New Testament Books. For example, Jesus Christ Himself emphasized the importance of having the knowledge of the end times, as we see in the Gospel of Matthew (10:16-23, 13:31-51, 24:1-51). Indeed, most of the parables Jesus taught in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke refer to the subject of Eschatology. Notably, the Old Testament Books of Psalms, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel contain extensive information in the form of prophecy relating to the end times. In fact, the Book of The Revelation has more Old Testament references than any other New Testament Book, with over 70% of the verses containing references to the Old Testament.

Additionally, the Greek word aeon, meaning century (with the connotation of age), may be translated as end of the age. This connotation in the study of The Revelation is important to keep in mind since it refers to the literal destruction of the planet earth as it has been known since its creation, with some human beings being saved from this destruction and everlasting suffering and torment, to live or exist in a new heaven and new earth (Rev. 21:1-5).

While much modern eschatology and apocalyptic teaching involves the violent destruction of the world, Christian eschatology views the end times as the consummation or perfection of God’s Will, beginning with His creation of the world. As ancient Hebrew belief presents, life actually takes a linear (and not a cyclical) path beginning with God’s original creation and heading toward God’s final goal for His creation: the perfecting of the saints through Jesus Christ and His perfect atonement.

So, a study of the Book of The Revelation will reveal a consistent relationship to the rest of the Bible and will provide a closure or culmination of the common thread that runs through the entire Bible: Jesus Christ the Lord, Savior, and King of Kings.

Consummation is literally The Ultimate End, and the end is truly coming, whether you choose to believe it or not. There is nothing that you; or anyone else can do to prevent or avoid it. You may not choose to believe anything the Bible says. Well, your unbelief or denial does not change the real Truth. You may choose not to believe in God. Again, your unbelief or denial does not change the Truth. You are going to face the Ultimate End whether you want to or not; and it is coming soon. When the end does come, you are going to find yourself in one of two positions. You are either going to perish and find yourself in a place of eternal torment and anguish. Or, you will be saved from the holocaust and find yourself in eternal peace and comfort. You actually have the choice in the matter. Unbelief will carry you to the state of suffering and torment. Repentance and faith in Jesus Christ will carry you to eternal salvation. You will choose for yourself.

It is of the utmost importance that everyone studies and understands the issues and facts regarding the Ultimate End of our world and universe. God is going to destroy this world and universe as we know it, and create a New Heaven and New Earth for the security and perfect peace and comfort for His own people. You can be one of God’s own children. All you have to do is follow His Will for your life. Study God’s Word as you read this writing, and let yourself be totally changed and made new by the power and love of God through Jesus Christ.

    CHAPTER I

    OUTLINE OF THE REVELATION

The Revelation of Jesus Christ; which God gave unto Him, to show unto His servants things which must shortly come to pass (Revelation 1:1).

I believe the best introduction to the study of any material is the development of a clear and concise outline of the information presented. I take this opportunity to present an outline of the Scriptural Book of The Revelation. This outline actually closely follows the Table of Contents for this writing. By breaking down the Book into its specific elements of information, I am hopeful that you will be able to better grasp the true meaning being conveyed by God. After all, this is the True Word of God being given here.

Notice that God gave this Revelation to Jesus Christ, Who, in turn, shares it with His servants. Jesus Christ is actually delivering The Revelation, and He is presenting it to His own servants: those people who have been born again of the Spirit by repentance of sin and complete faith and trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Jesus Christ has chosen to use His beloved Apostle John to actually write the words to be shared.

To clarify: The Revelation of Jesus Christ is both revealing Jesus Christ, and that which is revealed by Jesus Christ. Christ has already been revealed to the entire world; has already lived His perfect life without sin; has already given His Life as the perfect and complete sacrifice for the sins of the world; has already defeated sin and death by His Resurrection; and has already ascended to Heaven where He now sits at the right hand of God awaiting His return to this earth in power and great glory, where He will take His rightful and eternal place as King and Ruler over all; for all eternity future. In the future, as presented in the prophecy of The Revelation, Jesus Christ will be revealed as He comes back to this earth in power and great glory.

The Revelation is being given by Jesus Christ, Who is God the Son, as He shares the future consummation of all history as mankind knows it. God, functioning as the eternal Messiah, Jesus Christ, is sharing this profound and sacred Revelation with His own children, as well as anyone who will listen and use these sacred words to actually come into the family of God. Then, the mighty and sacred Word of God presents the Revelation of Jesus Christ as He comes to take His place of authority and reign over the New Heaven, New Earth, and New Jerusalem.

    CHAPTER II

PRINCIPLES FOR STUDY OF THE REVELATION

Blessed is the person that reads and hears the words of this prophecy, and keeps those things which are written in it; for the time is at hand (Revelation 1:3)

As anyone begins a study of the Book of The Revelation and the associated Scriptures of Eschatology, it is critical to identify and apply some very important principles for this study. These principles can provide the Bible student with some very effective methods of study, along with a very effective approach to all Biblical study. Most importantly, read and study your Bible as you follow this study guide! There is no substitute for your own personal study of God’s Word. There is no substitute for the sacred Truth found in the Holy Bible.

Please note that these principles for study of The Revelation apply primarily to the true Christian believer. If you have not been born again of the Spirit as a true child of God, then you will be studying God’s Word under very different precepts. The person who has not been born again of the Spirit
