    How it all started…

    It was the night of Seraphina and Frederick Ferret’s big housewarming party. The Ferret twins had won a new house in a demolition derby, and Frederick invited everyone who had asked for an autograph to come to the party. But Devin Harris objected to going.

    Come on, Devin, said his mother, who had gotten Frederick to autograph her sock. We don’t want to be late!

    What makes you think a dumb party will get me any closer to a genuine championship? asked Devin. Besides, ferrets can’t speak English or walk on their hind legs.

    Frederick and Seraphina can, his twin sister, Latoya, pointed out. Plus, a championship is pretty much all you’ve talked about for the last five months. We’re getting tired of it. Let’s go to the party and have some fun.

    Also, said Devin’s father, "they are trying to be nice." Frederick had signed his empty popcorn bag.

    Alright, fine! shouted Devin. I’ll go if it gets you to stop bothering me about it!

    At the party, Frederick and Seraphina Ferret introduced a new guy in town, Colt Garson, who had recently made the Spillwood High School basketball team. Colt was funny and everyone liked him immediately.

    Devin, on the other hand, was unhappy about not being the center of attention, and decided he wanted nothing more to do with the party. He walked outside to be alone.
