It Wasn’t My Fault, Honest!
The Tricycle
I don’t know how all this blame started, but for some reason, every time one of my baby brothers got hurt, it was always my fault. The person who thinks that siblings are great must be out of their ever-loving mind. All I ever wanted was someone to play with and have fun with, but for some reason, my job description, according to my mom, was babysitter
!
Having three younger brothers was a royal pain and a job I didn’t choose to tackle. No one asked me if I wanted to be my brothers’ keeper. My only desire was to go and play outside and have fun. Sure, I was the oldest of the second set of kids and a girl. So what? There were seven of us altogether, two girls and five boys. Mom said I marched to a different drummer because I was the middle child. What did that mean anyway?
We moved from Kansas to live in a little town along the southern coast of Texas. My aunt and grandmother lived there too. Mom said the winters were bad for me and I needed a warm climate to stay healthy. I guess that’s where all my bad luck started. So it’s my fault we had to leave our happy home in Kansas and hold up in a tiny two-bedroom duplex in Texas. That’s where it all began!
One day, Mom told me to take my brother Zack out to ride his tricycle and stay to watch him. Geez, I was only five! Thinking it would be better to let him ride in the garage instead of the alley behind the apartment was my first mistake. Who would have thought?
