About this ebook
Shirley Lee
Shirley Lee’s lifelong love affair with words began in childhood, when she took many adventures among the books carefully stored on wooden shelves. As a young adult, Shirley still enjoys regular ephemeral escapes from reality, both in reading the work of others and in creating her own.

PROLOGUE
T HE GROUND SHOOK and dirt rose in the cold air. She opened her eyes and looked through her window. The moon still hung high among the oak trees whose leaves swayed rhythmically. She stared at the mud-covered land. Sprouts were starting to grow, making their way through the layered dirt. She could see nothing extraordinary but a bunch of hoofmarks. Cold air leaked in through cracks around the window. She could feel it: spring was coming. It was on its way.
Horses roamed the open field. They travelled constantly, leaving nothing behind but hoofmarks. It was sad to watch them leave. She had always had a strong connection with them. People called her the horse whisperer. The horses would leave this spring and return next winter, as they did every year. Each time they returned, there were a few members added to the herd.
The legend said that horses left the land but always returned. If they did not, then things were bad.
THE LEGEND OF TWO LANDS
O NCE UPON A time, Carisie, the goddess of the wind, invited horses to settle in Camberdice, a magical place where innocents lived. The place was linked to a portal that allowed creatures to travel from Camberdice to Earth. Humans were close allies with equines, who brought peace and hope to Earth and turned what had once been darkness into happiness. A century passed with equines travelling from one end of the portal to the other to visit their human companions.
One day, the Son of Earth was born. He was meant to lead the people and guard them with his name and his power. But he was born on the eclipse. The darkness that blocked out the sun caused him to be evil; the eclipse gave him dark power with which to rule the world.
That same year, Carisie’s daughter was born. She was born with the sun, casting a glow around her. She was meant to connect the people, to defeat the dark with intelligence. But at the age of five, she became lost; she disappeared and left no trace behind. Carisie’s husband died and Carisie and her people lost hope. They believed that Carisie’s daughter, Carisa, had been hauled into Earth. They sealed the portal; they would rather be isolated than be in darkness.
AUGUST
A UGUST HAD SURVIVED on her own for years before being adopted. Her parents had found her on the street somewhere and taken her in. They had wanted a child of their own, so they adopted her and named her August, after the month when they had found her. They didn’t know her her real name or her exact age.
When I found you, you were a strong girl. Your blonde hair glowed like the sun. It almost seemed like you were protected. We believed that God had led us to you. You were a gift to us,
her mom told her. "You used to repeat the same word again and again. Camberdice—I think that’s what you said."
August’s parents, Janette and Jake, were brunette and blond respectively. They estimated that August was five when they adopted her. It was just the three of them in the family. They also had a hound named Dark and a little cat named Bobby.
You’ve always had a strong connection with horses,
her mother said once, when she was eight years old. I wonder why? When you first arrived, you saw a wild horse near our backyard. Instead of running away, you reached out to it. Then whenever that stallion saw you, he ran towards you. You were able to tame him at such a young age!
August’s hair was a bright goldish blonde. Her skin was a light peach, almost white, and her lips were pinkish red. Her eyes were dark purple, which was very unusual. People at school called her a wild child because of her eyes. Others even called her a freak. She hated school; she was not welcomed by anyone. August’s mom would sit beside the bed, listen to August’s worries, and hum songs she made up to soothe her. August’s father always made sure when he picked her up that that she didn’t have bruises and hadn’t been bullied. They loved August and tried to protect her.
A MORNING SURPRISE
A UGUST’S EYES OPENED to face the spinning fan. She dragged herself lazily across the room and into the bathroom. It was a splendid Saturday morning. The winter was ending and soon flowers would be blooming and birds would be chirping happily. She opened her closet, picked out a denim jacket, a T-shirt, and a pair of jeans, and got dressed. As she raced down the stairs towards the living room, she passed a row of paintings on the wall.
August’s mom, Janette, was preparing pancakes in the kitchen. Her dad was reading his newspaper and, as usual, not paying much attention to his surroundings.
Oh, you’re awake. Care for some pancakes before you head out?
Janette greeted
