CHAPTER
1
The sun was shining bright orange in the horizon. It slowly rose into the cloudless sky with its outer layer wriggling. Deton was a city of tranquillity and peace. It was situated right beside a dock, all of the boats were used for fishing. The water splashed against the side of the boats with immense power.
A boat called The Express was floating next to the walkway. It belonged to Harry, a man who fished for a living. He got his wages by getting the best fish there was and he was very good at it. Tom, his only son always helps out with the fishing.
Their house has three rooms, a living room, a kitchen and front room. It has a victorian look to it. The living room has two sofas with a glass table in the middle. Pictures of the family hung on the wall, vases sit on tall steel stands. Tom walks in the kitchen where Mary is cooking lunch. He is wearing a fisherman’s outfit, suggesting that it was time to go fishing. Mary turns the gas down and turns to him.
Are you ready?
Mary is a blonde women with a nice figure, she wore a pink top with a pair of jeans.
Yeah, dad’s just gone to get the boat ready
Replies Tom having a drink of water.
Okay, be careful honey
Is that something to tell me?
Tom puts the glass down.
She laughs. No, but it just gives me a piece of mind knowing that you’re going to be fine
Don’t worry mom, I’ll be fine
Mary gives Tom a motherly kiss on the forehead. She watches him stride out of the kitchen, she waits until Tom’s footsteps disappear. When everything is silent, Mary returns to her cooking turning the gas back up.
Tom walks down the walkway through the aisle of boats, he hums a tune which he always had since he started to help his father out. He spots Harry untying the boat, Tom waves to get Harry’s attention.
Dad! Are we ready to go?
Tom shouts.
Of course! Hop in son!
This was an everyday routine for Tom now. He liked it but going out to the open sea was sometimes scary, not to mention the hard work. After stepping in the boat, Tom gets to work right away.
Time to roll!
Shouts his father from the steering room.
I hear you loud and clear!
Shouts back Tom holding on to the side.
The boat slowly begins to drift into the sea. Deton got smaller as they get farther from it, this was a thing Tom saw everyday. After fifteen minutes the small town has become a black dot, it is replaced by the sea. Harry stops the engine and has a glance at the small waves of water.
Tom! time to get the net into the water, let’s go!
Harry shouts as he walks over to the hanging net.
The net was attached to two pillars on the side of the boat, they were huge and bent slightly so that the net could go into the water. Two iron wheels were used to lower the net by turning them. Harry takes hold of one and turns. Harry’s end slowly starts to lower, the ropes holding the net slide around a small wheel on the end of the pillar.
Come on Tom!
Tom turns the wheel and his end begins to go down. Tom can feel his arms begging him to stop, but this was too common and he’d gotten used to it. The net hits the water and disappears.
You took your time, what’s up?
Harry sounded tired.
Nothing, I just had something on my mind
Replies Tom leaning on the side.
What’s on your mind son?
Asks Harry doing the same.
Nothing, I just thought about to pass the time, it’s no big deal
Tom
A sigh. You know that me and your mother are there for you right?
Tom turns his head to Harry. He got a look that said Harry meant what he said.
Of course I do, that’s what mother and fathers are supposed to do aren’t they? Be there for their kids
Yeah
Replies Harry nodding.
Tom looks down at the water, it splashed against the side of the boat with intense power. He couldn’t help but wonder what the sea looked like at night, how dark the water must be and still the fish can swim in it.
Let’s reel in our catch. I hope it’s a lot because we need the money
The desperateness showing in his voice.
Me too
They begin to spin the wheels backwards, the tension building as they did. The water starts to splash violently. The net emerges carrying piles of fish bouncing around.
Ha-ha! Just what I wanted to see!
Explodes Harry.
Dad, we see fish everyday, what’s getting you so happy about this batch?
It’s a fisherman’s way of getting victory son! You’ll understand one day
The net is in reaching distance so Tom reaches out and gets a hold. It was way too heavy for him to pull in. Harry laughs while encouraging him.
Come on son! Put your back into it! It’s only fish!
You forgot to mention that there’s like more than a thousand here!
Tom shouts back.
They all weigh the same, all you need is a little man power
Why don’t you show me by giving me a hand?
Asks Tom when he got too out of breath.
Alright, watch this my boy
Says Harry taking hold of the net.
They both pull with all of their strength, their grunts loud enough that the flapping fish couldn’t be heard over them. Everything is blocked out of their minds so their concentration was a hundred percent. When the net is over the boat, Harry let’s all of the fishes fall onto it. The wave of falling fish scatter all over the floor of the boat.
You see? That’s what you call man power, I still got it
says Harry proudly.
Yeah, you do, why was this one so heavy and not the rest?
Tom stares at the blue water.
I don’t know son, but what I do know is that we’ve got our pay, let’s head back
Tom nods his approval. After a small smile, Harry heads back to the steering room. Tom gazes at the dying fish, their wide eyes staring right back at him with life draining away. The boat begins to move again. As Tom looks at the back of the boat he spots the wake behind them. At that moment a urge to explore this vast other worldly place enters his mind and he wonders whether he ever will or will not.
CHAPTER
2
Tom enters the house and calls out to Mary. He left Harry behind to let him collect the pay. His mother answers from the front room, she was watching television with a glass of orange juice. She turns her head to the doorway putting the glass down.
So how’d it go? Catch anything worth your while?
Yeah, filled the whole boat
Tom replies taking of his wet boots.
That’s great, I have a feeling that you’ll be a fine fisherman. Are you hungry? Want me to make you anything?
She stands up with her hands together.
No. I’m just going for a walk. I have to meet somebody
Who is it or is it a bit confidential?
Asks Mary teasingly.
Confidential
Replies Tom reluctantly.
Mary folds her arms with a knowing look, one of her eyebrows raises which made Tom uncomfortable.
Don’t worry. I won’t embarrass you anymore, but I have one more question
Yeah
Where’s your father? He hasn’t eaten all day
He’s getting the money. He’ll be back soon. I’ll just go and change
Sure honey
Tom runs up the stairs with hard footsteps. Mary walks to the window with a hint of concern on her
