About this ebook

You will feel the inspiration of Jesus when you read the poems in this book. The poet points to a lifelong love of limericks as the influence behind his poetic endeavors. They are religious, largely inspired by his Christian upbringing. Although his first poem was written at the age of eighty-two, a desire to share his love for Jesus poetically has resulted in a large collection of poems not only about Jesus but also about everyday events in the long life of a dedicated Christian. The poet follows strict rules, so all the poems rhyme and are constructed that they make excellent lyrical and metrical subjects for reading to others.

Author

Jacob Nathaniel Sheperd

Jacob Nathaniel Shepherd, Jr. was born in 1923 in Greensboro, North Carolina. The family’s membership and participation in activities at First Lutheran Church led him to develop a deep and lasting love for Jesus.  He graduated from Greensboro Senior High School at the age of fifteen. As captain and pilot of a B-17 bomber, he flew twenty-five combat missions over Germany. He received an engineering degree from North Carolina State and retired from Blue Bell, Inc. as a corporate vice-president.  He was happily married for forty-seven years to the mother of his seven children, which ended tragically when she died from lung cancer. He remarried in 2005 to a widow whom he met in a church program. They reside in Winnabow, North Carolina.  His poetic endeavors began in 2005, when he wrote a poem as a stewardship message for his church. This first poem became a hymn and is included in his book under the title, “I Have a Friend in Heaven!”

Let A Shepherd Be Your Guide

    My Signature Poem

Let a Shepherd be your guide and stay above the fray.

That’s how you can be so sure that you won’t lose your way.

Follow Jesus on that narrow path and watch just where He goes.

Please don’t do as others do and never step on His toes!

Jesus travels far and wide, He’s always on the move.

He’s watching out for those in need, to share with them His love.

If you’re down and out and need His help, be sure to let Him know.

He will soon be at your side with His blessings to bestow!

There is no greater love than His, it’s there for one and all.

He’s travelling around the universe and waiting for a call.

If some poor soul has lost his way and doesn’t know what to do,

Jesus wants to make his day and He will pull him through!

Down here on earth we sometimes feel that we are so secure.

We have Aflac, Geico, triple A, and many more for sure.

We don’t hesitate to call on them in fact we use them all.

We pay these folks a tidy sum for instant help to be there when we call!

I often call on Jesus when I need some good advice.

I get down on my knees and pray to Him in Paradise.

Even though I know He’s busy He always takes the time

To listen to me while I make my case and doesn’t charge a dime!

I thank my lucky stars each day for Jesus knows my name.

He knows that I’m a sinner but loves me just the same.

When I confess to Him that I’ve gone wrong, it happens every day,

He says to me so lovingly Don’t worry child, you didn’t forget to pray!

    Introduction

I began writing poetry about five years ago when the first poem I wrote had a good reception from all the folks in my Church. I had written that poem to present as part of the Stewardship Campaign.

In my long lifetime of 89 years, I have packed a multitude of information into my memory cells, and so far they are remaining quite intact, and as a result, I have a very handy slate of things to write about. My primary interest in life is and has been for a long time my love for Jesus Christ and how He was prepared by God to lead us all into Heaven when our earthly journey is finished. However, my long life has also enabled me to be involved in a myriad of enterprises and interests, which gives me a generous supply of subjects just waiting to be poetically magnified.

I choose to do my story telling through the medium of poetry, and I believe in rhyming, metrically sound verses, and can generally tell a story in six verses of four lines each. The large majority of my poems are Christian in content, based on my love and devotion to Jesus. However, my total collection covers a real variety of subjects.

I have an e-mail lineup of approximately 100 who receive my poems as soon as they are written. In addition, I speak regularly to five or six local Assisted Living Homes, and the metric quality of my poems makes for good vocal presentation. My poems are very readable and I published a small devotional book a year ago which was received quite well locally.

This new book is largely about my love for Jesus, and how we should live in order to receive His Blessing and acceptance into Heaven when we finish our earthly journey. There is a poem for every day of the year, with special content poems on all holidays. Not all of the poems are religious, nor is the reader bound to follow the daily order. In fact if you desire, you can read any poem in the book on any day, finding a proper devotion as you see fit, following Jesus’ declaration that we all have free will! I have included my interpretation of the Lord’s Prayer in the beginning pages to be used in a devotional!

Enhance your devotional with a Hymn from the center of the book!

    Book Summary

You will feel the inspiration of Jesus when you read the poems in this book. The poet points to a lifelong love of limericks as the influence behind his poetic endeavors……they are religious largely inspired by his Christian upbringing . Although his first poem was written at the age of 82, a desire to share his love for Jesus poetically has resulted in a large collection of poems not only about Jesus but also about everyday events in the long life of a dedicated Christian . The poet follows strict rules in that all the poems rhyme and are so constructed that they make excellent lyrical and metrical subjects for reading to others. You may be so inclined but if not, try it…..you’ll like it!

    First Things First

The first day of the year is here again so we must begin anew

To make our plans and resolutions for things we want to do.

We lived up to what we resolved last year, did not skip a one.

Some of them required persistence but most of them were fun!

It feels real good to reach our goals, to hold our head up high.

Don’t resolve to reach the moon unless you expect to fly.

Even then you may fall short and have to change your plans,

But if you’re bound to travel pick out some nearby foreign lands!

If you’re like me you’ve been abroad but you haven’t seen it all.

Most of your travels are limited to the nearby downtown mall.

Pick out a resort and pack your bag, be sure to take your phone.

Always include your significant other, you dare not travel alone!

Most of us won’t have to travel for we have things to do at home.

Just ask the speaker of the house and you won’t have to roam.

These are made to order projects but don’t fit your bucket list,

But once your mate outlines everything she won’t have to insist!

Oh yes, our home is certainly our castle and we like for it to be,

The envy of the neighborhood and a delight for all to see.

When visitors come and enter the door, the tour will then begin.

Just be sure you’ve put your playthings away, that would be a sin!

When the day is over, I think I’m through, resolutions are all made.

Next year is going to be a struggle, I’m sure some of them will fade.

Home Depot and Lowe’s will send me invitations, come back for more,

I’ll be parking on their doorstep waiting for them to open the door!

    A Broken Heart

Have you ever had a broken heart, one that would not mend?

Sometimes it makes you feel so bad you wish the world would end.

Don’t despair, there is a cure, but it may take a while.

While you’re healing, play the field, don’t let it cramp your style!

Victims of a broken heart sometimes can’t take the heat.

Drastic measures won’t help the cause, you must accept defeat.

The object of a failed romance is better left alone.

Stay out of sight and for goodness sake, stay off the telephone!

The only treatment that I know about comes to us from above.

It is the real live loving touch of Jesus with His love.

He takes our wounded heart with Him and gives it tender care.

When He returns it with His love, it’s now in good repair!

Most broken hearts are victims of a badly failed affair.

We’re better off to take our lumps, it’s really not so rare.

Find a lonesome someone who’s a victim too, and get back on the ball.

When one door closes it is true, another opens, you won’t miss out at all!

I know for sure without a doubt, that Jesus plays a hand.

He keeps in touch with all our moves and helps us when He can.

Don’t ever be afraid to call on Him, He loves to be of aid,

And all of those with broken hearts will remember the price He paid!

Broken hearts and broken dreams are somewhat much the same.

They both result from sad affairs, it’s hard to place the blame.

It’s best if we will just admit, if we want to survive,

After all that we’ve been through, we’re lucky to be alive!

    A New Year Is Underway

It’s the third day of the new year, things seem to be on track.

Resolutions that we made are set in stone, there is no turning back.

Hold on, you say, you need more time, can you have another day?

Just ask the Judge, He’s up in Heaven, get on your knees and pray!

Today is one of those crucial times when plans are being made.

We all will doubtless need some help, where can we get some aid?

Don’t let yourself be misled by the forces that seek your doom,

Just follow the Master of our fate, He’s in that Upper Room!

The greatest power the world has ever known is now at our command.

We have access this very day to the King of the Promised Land.

Don’t feel you must do the planning all alone, He is by your side.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help for Jesus wants to be your guide!

When I look back upon my life and view where I have been,

I’m still around by the Grace of God, for Jesus is my friend.

I’ve made some decisions that were wrong and I see in afterthought,

That without Jesus helping me, much damage I could have wrought!

I offer thanks right here and now to Jesus and all my friends.

Some wonderful folks have gone aloft to a life that never ends.

To all of us, as we begin this New Year, let’s take Jesus by the hand .

He’ll lead our precious USA to the future with good leaders in command!

Some folks say I mix my religion with too much politics,

But you can be sure that I haven’t joined a bunch of heretics.

I always pray that Jesus will help our leaders keep our nation whole,

While He continues to provide to each of us, salvation of our soul!

    A Plan For Today

Speak to Jesus right away when you wake up each day,

Let Him know you’re still around, He’ll hear you when you pray.

Tell Him all about your problems and ask for His advice.

Don’t wait until your troubles mount and you can’t pay the price!

Jesus wants us all to lead a life that’s free of sin,

So we must always let Him know the kind of fix we’re in.

It would work much better if we’d just tell Him in advance

What it is we’re about to do and what’s the circumstance!

Everyone should know and be aware that Jesus knows our plan

And we should also know that He’ll always help us if He can.

Tell Jesus what you’re striving for and ask if He approves.

There may be a better way, He says, if you just make some moves!

Jesus was a carpenter, a working man like me.

I’m sure He was a crafty man, there in Galilee.

He doesn’t speak a lot about those days when He was young.

We’ve heard much more about the cross on which He hung!

I love to talk with Jesus and hear Him call my name.

Without His love and good advice life would not have been the same.

I’ve always tried to do what’s right, to help some others too.

I’m thankful that Jesus has been close by to tell me what to do!

It’s wonderful to have the Lord to tell me I’m okay.

Without the love He’s shown for me I wouldn’t be here today.

I need to pray to let Him know that He is still my King.

I love you Lord with all my heart and thanks for everything!

    A Prayer For A Friend

Dedicated to the family of Bruce John Cartier

Goodbye Bruce my very dear friend.

You have reached a very glorious end.

You can bet we’ll miss your smiling face,

But you are now at home in a wonderful place!

I’m sure that dear Jesus took your hand,

And led you down that road to the Promised Land.

In the twinkling of an eye He cured your ills.

No longer must you take those pills!

There comes a time when we all must go.

Our days must end down here below.

We leave behind our family and friends,

But we go to that land where life never ends!

We never know when our time will come.

Today for many, tomorrow for some.

They are waiting in Heaven for us to arrive.

All our friends who’ve died and gone are now alive!

We who love Jesus are said to be born again.

At that birth He takes away all our sin.

We start life anew in the Promised Land,

Where Jesus will greet us with a helping hand!

So Bruce, I really don’t want to say goodbye.

That word always upsets and makes me cry.

So I’ll just say once more, "so long my friend,

It’s just the beginning and not the end!

    A Triple Crown Affair

I’ve been around the world and back but I like it here at home.

As I’ve aged I’ve settled down and am not so inclined to roam,

But yes, I still like to travel to see things I’ve heard about.

I do like to sleep in my own bed, of that there is no doubt!

A major perk of travelling is the chance to make new friends.

You broaden your horizon and of course friendship never ends.

Sometimes new friends I make are friends of friends I’ve had before.

Renewing contacts that had been lost bring back days of yore!

Let’s all admit right here and now we like to think about the past.

We keep scrapbooks about our yesterdays for memories fade so fast.

We pause to reminisce as we come to a happy smiling face.

It may be someone who’s now in Heaven, their memory you can’t erase!

We’ve just returned from a wonderful trip to the mountains of our state.

Chetola Lodge in Blowing Rock, the venue, and it was first rate,

To celebrate the birthday of an American Icon, Bob Timberlake his name,

Known around the world for his talents which have brought him fame!

This was an Our State Magazine affair, for which they’re famous too.

They like to feature home grown things of interest to me and you.

This magazine should be a coffee table staple in everybody’s home.

If you read it cover to cover then you won’t need to roam!

Bring all the ingredients together in one place and you have all you need.

Home grown Bob Timberlake, worthy of honor in our state indeed.

Chetola Lodge was last week the most interesting place to be,

Sponsored by Our State Magazine known from the mountains to the sea!

    A Valuable Asset

I find it hard to write about and yet it’s as simple as can be.

A very valuable thing it’s true and it’s given to us free.

It’s handed to us every day and we all will get the same.

Use it or lose it is a rule and we all must play the game!

You cannot put it in the bank you have to use it now.

Making plans for using it is tough, it isn’t when but how.

You can sit and let it multiply but it will only melt away.

Just like that ice cube always does once it leaves the tray!

Our package of this asset is given to us early every day.

It behooves us well to get up early and start to make it pay.

A sleepy head is penalized and pays a hefty price.

Participation is required and it’s not like shooting dice!

Although everyone has the same amount some say it’s not enough

For them to finish what they started they often need more stuff.

Complaints arise, you’ve heard them all, it’s usually an excuse,

But when you really boil it down it has to do with use!

Although the packages that we all get have equal content therein,

Some folks just waste the contents and don’t know how to begin.

You see them sitting on a park bench throwing their assets away.

For some this is a way of life and they pursue it day by day!

This asset that we are given every day comes to us from above.

It’s worth much more than its weight in gold and comes to us with love.

We never know how much is left in our account it’s not for us to say.

When we’ve used up all our T I M E we’ll go to Heaven to stay!

There’s A Fork In The Road To Eternity

The devil is alive and well he’s loading transports bound for hell.

Don’t buy a ticket, he’s got so many he needs to sell,

That he’ll soon be giving them away just to suck you in.

If you accept, you’re on the hook, heading for a life of sin!

Please don’t buy his bill of goods keep searching for a better choice.

Somewhere in the marketplace you’re bound to hear the Master’s voice.

That soothing tone is crystal clear and a sweet message it conveys.

This is something you can accept and it offers brighter days!

The devil won’t give up without a fight, on that one you can bet.

He’s got lots of things to offer that you haven’t even seen just yet.

He’s putting more agents on the job but offering the same old pitch.

Just sign your name on the dotted line my friend and we will make you rich!

To so many folks that’s an offer too good for them to refuse.

They figure, Oh what the hell, what have I got to lose?

They board the first transport that comes along and soon are on their way.

It’s not too long before they discover that someone always has to pay!

In the meantime Jesus is hard at work using a very different approach.

He is offering a different class of goods that’s certified above reproach.

When you sign in with Him you soon will earn your set of wings,

And when you first set foot in Heaven’s gate the Hallelujah Chorus sings!

We all do have a choice you know, which fork in the road do we take.

One fork is the wide open road to hell, please don’t make that mistake.

Please take the narrow one that leads uphill, let Jesus take your hand.

You see, that becomes the golden road that leads us to the Promised Land!

    All Through The Years

I know that Jesus wants me to write about His love for us.

It’s all about that perfect love that raised us from the dust.

Jesus learned His lessons well and knew what He must do,

To teach us all that God is love and that fact we know is true!

Mankind began with Adam, his story we know quite well.

We can trace his family until today, there is a lot to tell.

The Old Testament is his record book, it contains his family tree.

A new book started when Jesus came, another of God’s decree!

Jesus studied the Old Testament and spoke of things to come.

He talked about His Father’s love and about our Heavenly home.

He formed a tight-knit group of men, Apostles they were called.

When they gathered to hear Him speak crowds were quite enthralled!

Jesus had but three short years to get His story told.

His followers loved to hear Him speak about the men of old.

They formed a fellowship that will never die, it flourishes today,

And we still celebrate His lowly birth, it’s known as Christmas day!

The New Testament tells the story of Jesus’ life on earth.

I’ve never heard a single soul refute the story of His birth.

Our Holy Bible, the Old, The New, the greatest story ever told,

Continues to sustain us every day, it’s worth its weight in gold!

If you want to have a happy life then place your trust in Him,

The one that God sent as a Babe to take away our sin.

Don’t let the evil forces of this world change your good outlook.

You can always find an answer in the Bible, that very precious book!

    An Ode To Pastor Sam

I like to think of days gone by when I was just a kid.

Life for everyone was pleasant then and we enjoyed what we did.

It’s true we had some problems but all were within our reach.

If we could make it through the week we’d get to hear Sam Sox preach!

Now Pastor Sam was my dearest friend, he taught me quite a lot.

He was my mentor in many ways his advice was the best I ever got.

My Mom and Dad, they loved him too, for he was a friend to all.

Never too busy to sit and chat, always at your beck and call!

Sam and I played lots of golf, it was our favorite sport.

Neither of us were very good, that’s true I must report,

But we would always do our best to play a decent game.

The good thing was we were
