    Part One:

    What Is Attitude?

    Where Is Attitude Born?

    Introduction

    What Is Attitude?

Edward Lavin, in his book Life Meditations, defines attitude as, The first face we show to the outside world. Attitude is a word that we are accustomed to hearing in most conversations. It is also explained as a person’s state of mind. How I look at a situation has a great impact on my reaction to the information I receive concerning the matter. It can be used as a complaint or a compliment. It is the difference between promotion and demotion. However, the word attitude can be difficult to explain because it is related to our feelings.

What’s the difference between laughing about something and crying about it? Attitude. Which would you rather do? People who usually laugh easily are generally ones that you can talk to easily. Some of us look at life as an adventure to be enjoyed or a problem to be solved. There are infinite possibilities for living. Living in Adventure Land or Problemville starts with building a positive attitude toward yourself and others, with the understanding of why you feel the way you do and how your temperament can motivate you into action. The choice is yours. The key is attitude. We will examine important aspects of attitude and see how it can affect our lives in positive and negative ways.

    Where is Attitude Born?

The mind of each person is really the man himself.

Mary, twenty years old, committed suicide to end her problems. She shut herself in an idling car. She left behind a three-page letter addressed to her parents that stated the following:

When I was five years old you told me that I would never amount to anything in this life. I guess you were right.

This attitude seems to be natural to infants. Babies jump into this world excited and curious to explore the entire world around them. Values, biases, fears, and judgments are acquired primarily from people we admire or with whom we can identify. These people can be parents, teachers, friends, or colleagues who play a meaningful role in our lives. It is good if this identification is positive. If it is not, then the person has influenced us negatively.

Have you heard the expression Attitude is everything? It is a belief that is true when it comes to overcoming obstacles and achieving your goals. With a positive attitude, you can accomplish anything. On the other hand, a negative disposition can be a greater obstacle than any technical challenge. It can separate you from your goals. If you find yourself blaming others for your failures, or if you expect someone else to solve your problems, then your negative attitude may be your biggest struggle. No matter how talented, intelligent, or deserving you are, if you have a bad attitude, your Ship of Dreams will sink faster than the Titanic. A negative disposition can sap your confidence to solve even the minor perplexity in your life. A person’s attitude is a reflection of how he or she will interact with people through the years. In addition, your mind-set is made up of your emotions and your feelings. It is within your mind that your moods develop. The mind is your attitude sanctuary.

When you have a pure, sincere motivation, you will have the right view toward others. You will demonstrate kindness, compassion, love, and respect.
