    Chapter 1:

    Shadow Howling

The forest was dark and the ground was covered with moss. A timber wolf named Luna was walking through the forest. She had a fur coat the color of tree bark. As Luna walked through the forest, she saw very tall trees. Some were knocked over with branches lying across the path. The floor of the forest was covered with brightly colored leaves of orange, red, brown, and green.

It was autumn and Luna was hunting deer for her family. It was for Shadow’s party. Shadow was Luna’s younger brother, and the party would be a great celebration for him. He was coming of age and it was time for him to howl at his first moon. A wolf comes to age at twenty-four moons (one moon equals one month).

Luna remembered her first moon. She was just a pup with light brown fur and yellow eyes that sparkled. She remembered the leaves falling from the trees. She remembered the moss-covered ceremonial rock that she had to howl on. It was light gray and reflected her shadow. She stood tall, ears flattened to her head, and proudly held her head and tail high. She howled a beautiful howl, and then her family joined in. After her howl, Luna and her family walked over to the deer
