Pulchritudinous
He heard whispers but couldn’t hear the words. He heard them again but couldn’t see, his eyes covered with cloth and tied tightly. He could smell the earth and feel the cold, he was somewhere underground. The whispers were getting further away and then disappeared. He was alone.
He couldn’t move; hands tied behind his back, legs bound.
Early that morning he’d walked beside the brook, it made a merry tune as it flowed over stones towards the river. The sun peered through the trees, dancing on the water as the branches swayed. He could smell the forest, the grass, the trees even the flowers. It had been a beautiful morning like so many others.
He’d sat down with his back against the trunk of a tree. Thinking how lucky he was, surrounded by such beauty even though he had no one to share it with.
He loved the springtime, flowers of every colour scattered across the ground. The trees filled with leaves, all shades of green. He looked up at the sky, not a cloud in sight.
What would he do today, he’d thought. Perhaps a walk to the cave of light, a place he liked to visit as often as he could. It wasn’t far, only an hour’s walk from the brook.
The cave of light intrigued him; crystals of mauve and pink glowed and hummed. It was a peaceful place, where others would sometimes gather at night but he alone would visit during the day. He would love to be there when they danced and laughed among the crystals, but he had never been welcome.
Rejected by the forest dwellers, he’d learned to live his life alone. Solitude had become his friend. His own thoughts were his companions even though there was no conversation.
He managed very well with this lonely existence for he’d never known it any other way.
He’d heard stories, of a wizard bringing him to the forest as a baby. Stories he’d overheard, for he never spoke with others, they’d always run away when he approached.
He recalled those long winter nights, snow on the ground and a bitter chill in the air. He remembered the wizard bringing him a blanket. The only act of kindness he’d ever known.
As he’d moved towards the cave of light he’d heard a sound, a light breeze whistling through the trees towards him. He stopped and watched as the branches on a tree bend down to touch him. Gently stroking his hair with its’ leaves, it made him smile. The breeze stopped as quickly as it started and he’d pressed on towards the cave.
He remembered walking through a vale of flowers, yellow flowers that had a sweet smell which once again made him smile.
He’d arrived at the cave of light, and entered. The humming was soothing to his ears and the crystals glowed as if by magic. He’d sat and pondered, wondering what would become of him. He had no clothes as forest dwellers had, just what the forest had offered; no shoes on his feet.
He had nothing to his name; in fact he didn’t even have a name that he was aware of.
Perhaps in time others will befriend him, he’d hoped
