The writing of this book is long over due. I wish that I had it in hand thirty-two years ago when the ‘love of my life’ and I got married, way back when. I could have also used a great text like this myself, when I begin pastoral ministry, almost thirty years ago. This book is written with almost thirty years experience as being a minister, including experience as an official wedding celebrant. The text is actually intentionally written from three different perspectives.
First and foremost it is written for couples who are engaged to be married. I trust that you will consider it as a great textbook for your upcoming wedding ceremony.
Secondly, this book is written for friends and families of those getting married so you will understand more of the details that need to be looked after, when planning a wedding. I trust that you too will see this book as a textbook.
Last but not least, this book is written for a ‘teaching’ tool for my fellow wedding celebrants out there who like me are offering the service of officiating at wedding ceremonies. I trust that all the information contained herein will be both educational and inspirational. Enjoy!
FOREWORD
by
Dr. Mary Speed
Dr. Freake’s book: Wonderful Weddings & Afterward Wonders fosters quiet reflection and endorses passionate intimacies. Written from his plethora of experience in pastoral work, the reader senses that he has heard it all.
Fortunately Dr. Freake is generous in his portrayals of what works and does not work for wonderful wedding celebrations. Read to remind yourself and others that these days of preparation afford times of joy for the couple that they will recount for years on end.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The writing of this text like all of my others has never been the results of my individual efforts. Thankfulness is hereby expressed first and foremost to the Spirit for His divine help. This blessing of help includes but is not limited to: wisdom, guidance, and strength, time management, courage, insight, flexibility, creativity, determination and perseverance . . . etc.
Appreciation is also expressed to my family who has supported me on numerous occasions when I just had to sit at the computer and write . . .
Thanks! I love you all.
PROLOGUE
"For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh." Emphasis mine.
Genesis 2:24 (NIV)
As one can readily see, the biblical patterns of marriage include the three notions of: leaving, cleaving and weaving . . .
DEDICATION
This book is warmly dedicated to my four children, (three daughters and one son). May each one of you find and marry the ideal spouse with whom you will live your lives to the fullest. No need to look for the perfect person because he or she likely does not exist.
Be sure to ask God to help you in the careful selection of your spouse. May you follow the example of your dad and not settle for less than the best of who God has for you!
INTRODUCTION
Another book . . . , do we need yet another one? While most would agree that a book on meaningful marriages might reach the bestseller list, it must be noted here that this book is not about marriage. It is rather about weddings, usually what proceeds a marriage.
As a Wedding Celebrant, I have officiated at lots of weddings. I have performed weddings for all kinds of people such as bikers, firefighters, teachers, police officers, and many others both rich and poor. I have conducted wedding celebrations in both official languages of English and French and on an occasion or two even bilingually, so as to include all in attendance.
I have also been privileged and
