in order to pursue my Postgraduate medical training at New York

New York. Now, looking back upon the vast time-span of the five
decades gone by, I can hardly believe that our national landscape has
undergone a sea change. According to an old Oriental adage, Even
Mother Nature changes in a decades time, thus the inevitable
changes have turned at least five times over beyond recognition.
America as we know it today is a drastically different country
from what we observed back in the 60s: many a thing that was
acceptable back then is no longer even permissible, or downright
illegal. Indeed, it goes without saying that the last half a century has
been both tumultuous and cataclysmal in U.S. history.
I have lived in Springfield, IL for 38 years since 1974 in a
professional move from Honolulu, Hawaii and I became a U.S.
citizen in 1976 when we celebrated the Bicentennial. I am still very
grateful to my adopted country for what she has done for me and
my family. My two children were born, raised and educated in this
blessed nation. Nothing gives me more pleasure and happiness than
to see them vigorously strive for their own professional careers.
As we live in a diverse, pluralistic society, aptly called melting
pot or tossed salad, I, myself, am always determined to be an
active Player in the Great American Game of Life rather than being
an idle or passive spectator. For nearly quarter a century, whatever
social issues or subjects might come along to grab my attention, I
havent hesitated to express my personal or professional opinion or
viewpoint by writing to the Editor of newspapers, local and national,
magazines, periodicals as well as professional journals. My letters
and communications number altogether a little over 120. Now, I
xxii
call them collectively, JUST MY TWO CENTS. Most of them
were published in the respective media, and my readers responses,
whether favorable or critical, are also included. If indicated, some
references are provided for further elucidation.
I am well aware that my voice is feeble or hardly audible like
a voice in the wilderness. Yet, I believe that I leave behind my
footprints on the Prairie that I have traversed thus far.
This book would not have come into existence without the loving
and faithful support of my beloved wife, Young, who is always the
source of my strength. My special thanks go to Aimie Trussell and
Ms. Sara Barger who shared unselfishly their precious time with
me in the preparation of the manuscript. I will always be grateful to
them for their generous help.

S. KOREA MELEE
WAS A DISGRACE
(The State Journal-Register, October 2, 1988)
The eyes of the whole world are now fixed upon Seoul, Korea, the site of the 24th Olympiad. Needless to say, Korea’s hosting of the games comes as icing on the cake as she is inching toward democratization. Its opening ceremony was spectacular beyond description.
Korea has once again demonstrated her ingenuity and prowess, flaunting to the entire world its miraculous economic comeback. Such a fantastic gala with opening ceremony has made us Korean-Americans proud of our Korean heritage.
Hardly a week into the Games enters a disgrace. I am now referring to a boxing match on September 22 and its ring melee that followed. A Korean boxer by the name of Byun Jong-II plopped down in the ring for 67 minutes to protest against a 4-1 decision, thus earning the dubious reputation of a world record. The boxer felt the decision was grossly unfair and five other Korean officials even took part in the physical attack on referee Keith Walker.
I just happened to watch the match on TV. It’s beyond the stretch of my wildest imagination that such a chaotic mob scene would ever take place at the gymnasium. I don’t believe any decent person could shrug it off as one of those lapses of knee-jerk reaction and confusion. As one of the anchormen quipped, A gold medal for the worst behavior goes to the hosting country.
I would say that this most unfortunate incident has brought out the worst in Koreans. It amounts to their national disgrace.
We were and still are worried about ever-present dangers of sabotage against the Olympics from Communist North Korea. Ironically, South Koreans have so far found their worst enemy inside and among themselves. This boxing mishap already cost the president of the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) his job. They are reported to be looking into possible legal action against the coaches and boxer involved.
It is our fervent wish that the Korean image abroad won’t be tarred with the same brush. We pray that Korea conclude the Olympic Games with a bang, not a whimper.
WE’RE ALL UPROOTED
(Illinois Times, December 1-7, 1988)
The featured article of the November 10-16, 1988 Illinois Times by Maija Devine (See Seoul food
) had the Korean community literally up in arms.
I also find the article smacking of much self-serving, being loaded with misinformation, prejudices, and flagrant arrogance to the point of bigotry. The story reminds
