Dedications
To my wife, Stacy, for putting up with me and taking care of me for the past thirty-five years and for inspiring me to become the person I am today.
To my unbelievable kids, Alexa and Michael, for putting up with my in life
speeches and giving me the tools and experiences to learn and grow from. You have inspired me through your own achievements to set the bar even higher for myself.
Special thanks to my friends for putting up with my competitive but loving nature; Salty for asking the question, Why don’t you write a book?
; my brother Mark for telling me to publish it; DK for allowing me to read it to you; the thousands of inspiring people whom I have observed, learned from, and quoted in my book; and all the people who will read this book and hopefully gain some insight into their own abilities to improve their own lives through the inspiration of others.
Lastly, I dedicate this book to Nan and Gramps for showing me all the unconditional love anyone could hope for and teaching me an appreciation for life in the process.
Introduction
I AM WRITING THIS BOOK because as I have gotten older, I have noticed things that seem so obvious to me now that didn’t before. I figured that someone could benefit from my experiences and reality checks in a world filled with confusion. I’m not saying that I’m smarter than you or better looking or more successful. I am no more an expert than anyone else, but I have definite opinions that make a lot of sense to me, and I think some of them will make sense to you. This is a collection of observations, experiences, and advice mixed in with inspirational quotes and a sense of humor. If you don’t have a sense of humor or are not looking to be inspired and haven’t bent the first page, you could try returning it.
You bent the first page, didn’t you? Oh, well then, what have you got to lose? It’s a New York mentality, been there, done that school of thought. It was less about writing a book and more about sharing my perspective. The purpose was not to provide a blueprint. I’ve grown tired of all the fad diets, misinformation, irresponsible reporting, political rhetoric, and downright bullshit! Somewhat inspired by the
Just Say No" campaign aimed at drugs, which was started by First Lady Nancy Reagan. I like that bottom line, black-or-white approach—enough with the excuses and reasoning. Just say no. You could finish this book on a shuttle flight before you land—or in the bathroom (one good colonoscopy prep should get you through). It’s more of an inspirational handbook. I tried to take Bono’s advice and write as if I were dead. Seems like a more honest approach and the best way to write without compromise. Personally, I have always found inspiration from the poetry of classic rock-and-roll lyrics (fewer artists inspire me today), and I’ve tried to share some of my favorites, as well as other inspirational quotes from a variety of sources.
Call me a relic, call me what you will / Say I’m old fashion, say I’m over the hill. / Today’s music ain’t got the same soul / I like that old time rock and roll.
—Bob Seger, Old Time Rock and Roll
My hope is that this book inspires some of you to understand that you have the power to change the way you live your life—to understand that it’s within all of us to make the choices that dictate our lives. All aspects of your life are a reflection of the choices you make. If you want a different result, then you have to make a different choice.
Life is a sum of all your choices.
—Albert Camus, Nobel Prize–winning journalist
A healthy and balanced approach to diet/fitness, work routine, and family life is all up to the choices you make. Self-discipline, moderation, and logic are the keys to a balanced lifestyle. The only tools that you will need are initiative and the will to succeed. If some of the content seems cliché and obvious, that’s because it is. This is not rocket science! Simplification, instead of complication, is easier to achieve than you think. I urge you not to skim or speed-read this book, as you might miss the intended context or the true meaning behind a great quote.
I must confess that I have never read a self-help
book and don’t care much for the term (sounds too desperate and negative). I prefer to think of this book as a positive-thinking, inspirational avenue to self-awareness.
Awareness implies knowledge gained through one’s own perceptions or by means of information. Once you’re aware that the answers are within all of us, you will hopefully gain the insight and self-confidence to attain a sustainable healthy and balanced lifestyle. Life is a journey as well as a process. It may take you some time to realize that the power has always been within. Just as Dorothy from
