You may be thinking, what was the first step? That was making the decision to do the research and gather all the information you could to help land the position you have been seeking.
While it is true that the procedures in this book will be a great benefit to job seekers of all ages, the primary purpose of this book is to help baby boomers land their dream job. The Road to Controlling Your Career will help baby boomers to achieve two critical goals. 1- Identify and organize your skills and achievements. 2- Be able to articulate those skills and achievements in an interview and as part of your elevator speech (commercial).
For those who are employed while looking for another job, you must make the time to complete the proven processes and procedures we will cover in this guide. Remember, we are not talking about going for any job available; we are talking about you getting your dream job.
We will cover how to build a winning resume, how to create a Cover letter, constructing your Elevator Speech
( your commercial
) and developing a Thank you letter. You will also learn a great process for preparing for the interviews.
We will cover different types of interviews you may go through during your job search. We will review some important points on body language. Included is an extensive list of common interview questions. There is also a great section on how to impress the interviewer with answers that put you in the best possible light and will keep the focus on your skills.
Finally, we will cover how to negotiate your starting salary.
Now, let’s get started on the steps that will lead you to your dream job.

Building Your Resume
missing image fileThere are important documents you need to build before you go to any interview. I use the term build
because this procedure requires a lot of research, critical thinking and condensing all of your experiences and skills into a few pages. It starts with building an impressive resume that grabs the attention of potential employers.
It is my intention to offer enough help through this guide for anyone to build a strong resume and give a command performance in any interview. It is imperative that you have a well-constructed resume ready before you start interviewing.
Here are the generic or basic components you will need for any interview.
Resume
Core Competencies
Objective Statement
Cover letter / Application letter
Elevator speech/commercial
Thank you letter
I am a firm believer that all your focus should be on completing one segment at a time. You will find each completed segment will help you construct the next part of your interview package.
