I dedicate this book to my father, Abe Joseph Sr.; my grandfather Joe H. Joseph; and my great-grandfather Jacob Joseph. Jacob Joseph was the patriarch of the Joseph family. Born in slavery in South Carolina, Jacob was later sold to a plantation owner and lived and worked in southeast Georgia and north Florida. He eventually purchased his freedom and married Isabella Dawson. They raised fourteen children (seven boys and seven girls). Jacob was a farmer and ran a business featuring a technology called the dipping well.
This dipping well was used to sanitize livestock by ridding them of fleas, ticks, and other parasites. Farmers from southeast Georgia and north Florida would bring their livestock to my great-grandfather for treatment.
Joe H. Joseph was Jacob’s oldest son and my grandfather. Joe married Katie, and they also had fourteen children (seven boys and seven girls). My grandfather was also a farmer and sold his produce at market. In addition, he produced and sold turpentine. My father, Abe Joseph Sr., (known as Ham) married my mom, Maude, and they had eight children (five girls and three boys). My father, a World War II army veteran, worked for and retired from the local
