The Days of Mankind - Terry Strapp
Chapter 1
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
—Genesis 1:1
The word beginning signifies a starting point. The text of Genesis chapter 1 verse 1 begins that point of God’s plan for mankind. In verse 1, He created the heaven and the earth as a home for us. According to scripture, there are three heavens. The first is where God dwells (Deut. 26:15); the second is the galaxy comprised of the sun, moon, stars, etc. (Gen. 1:17); and the third is commonly referred to as the sky (Gen. 1:16). The earth, in this text, refers to dry land.
What I find interesting about this verse is how it parallels itself to our introduction to life in that it speaks of a God who is able to create, but what He creates knows nothing of its creator though subjected to His power. (As a matter of fact, John 1:11 says, He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
) As with nature, when we are born, we know nothing of our parents or the world we come to call home. It is through parenting that we identify ourselves with our mothers and fathers or guardians, who in turn introduce us to the world to which we adapt ourselves as members of the human race. Similarly, we can only know God through His Son,
