    The Power of the Tongue

You and I talk everyday. Talking is a part of everyday life because it is a form of communication that we as people use to express our thoughts or to get a message, point, or idea across. As you know, when you speak you do not see the words rolling out of your mouth. This means that words are spirit and that they go farther than the natural. Words go into your heart and soul. An example of this is when someone tells you they love you. When you hear those words something on the inside of you begins to light up. It makes your heart beat faster and your soul begins to smile (Proverbs 12:25b). Lets look at this same situation from a different perspective. Say someone tells you that they hate you. Someone who is very special to you. When you hear those words your soul gets sad and your heart becomes heavy. Words have the power to affect the inner soul of people.

Whether the words be positive or negative, the effect they have on the inner soul in turn affects the outer appearance or the natural realm. Using the examples from above if someone tells you that they love you there will be a smile on your face and you will be excited and pumped up, but when someone that you love tells you that they don‘t love you your smile will turn into a frown and you won‘t be pumped or up to do anything. Do you see the power that words have?

Proverbs 21:25 says that whoever guards his mouth keeps his soul from trouble. Yes, this means that your words can effect your own life. What you say, you also hear, so those words go into your heart, mind, and soul also. So not only do you sow seeds in others with words, but you’re sowing into your own life. When you encourage someone you are also encouraging yourself. When you down talk someone, you are down talking yourself. How is that when I’m talking about someone else? Listen when you take out of your time to talk about someone else that means you have nothing better to do and that you are insecure about yourself. So insecure that you have to put the spotlight on someone else’s flaws in order to cover up your own. When you talk about someone your sowing guilt because you know its wrong, but your doing it to make yourself look better. There is a reason behind everything we say or do. We are not just saying.

Knowing the power backing our words, we have to learn how to guard our tongue (Prov. 13:3). As stated earlier the things that we sow not only go into others, but we are sowing in our lives too. Mostly its those times where we want to say something so bad that we need to keep our mouth closed (Prov.15:1-2). For example sometimes when people get mad they say anything and then regret that they said it. As children of God we have to realize that we can not afford to blow up or act out on anger because people are watching(Prov.15:28). Am I saying act perfect to please people? No I’m saying remember who you are and whose you are. Remember that you don’t have to let the situation get the best of you. (Prov. 14: 29) (Prov. 15:1) Remember that you serve a God that is able to give you a way of escape out of every temptation. Even the temptation to be angry.(1 Corinthians 10:13). By guarding our tongue we will be able to give words of life
