CHAPTER 1
AN UNEVEN BATTLE
The sun rose over the horizon on a beautiful Saturday morning, flooding the city of Seattle, Washington with light. A twelve year old boy named Tyson Jenkins lay awake on the bottom of his bunk bed. His fourteen year old brother, Lance, was snoring loudly in the top bunk.
This world was not like your world. Everyone in this world had a special power. Some could fly. Others had super strength. But Tyson had the ability to change into any animal or insect at will, which is called a Changling. Lance had the powers of a ghost. He could fly, walk through walls, and even make his body transparent.
Tyson pulled off his covers, got out of bed and stretched. He was a skinny boy with brown hair and brown eyes. A long brown tail hung down his rear. It was sort of a trademark for Changlings. He wasn’t embarrassed about it, and people thought it was sort of cool. One thing that was slightly embarrassing was the fact that he was a bit lazy-eyed.
He left his and Lance’s bedroom and went downstairs for breakfast. When he entered the kitchen he saw his father, who had telekinetic powers, his mother, who had laser vision, and his thirteen year old sister Misty, who could create and command water, all sitting around the table eating breakfast. Mr. Jenkins was reading the newspaper.
Good morning Tyson!
said Mrs. Jenkins brightly when Tyson entered. She jumped up, got a plate and set it in front of an empty chair. Sit, sit. Have some breakfast.
Tyson said good morning to his family and sat down at the empty seat as his mother began spooning eggs on his plate. He scooped up a couple pieces of bacon, grabbed some toast and poured some orange juice. He began eating in silence.
Lance eventually entered the kitchen and Mrs. Jenkins did the same for him as she did for Tyson.
Mr. Jenkins put down his newspaper and said, So, school next week! Are you three ready?
Not even remotely,
said Lance glumly after taking a sip of his orange juice.
"Well I’m excited, said Misty.
I’m already packed."
That’s my girl,
said Mr. Jenkins. Always a step ahead.
Kiss up,
murmured Lance. Tyson heard him and smiled.
On Monday morning, Tyson and his siblings were going to be leaving for school. It was a boarding school named Cobalt Academy. It was a school for training and enhancing powers, but they still had to learn the basic subjects, like Math and Science. Tyson will be starting sixth grade. Misty will be in her second year at Cobalt, so she will be in the seventh grade. Lance, going to his third year, will be entering eighth grade.
What’s the matter, Lancy boy?
teased Misty. Are you mad because I finished last year with an A average and you finished with a C+?
Stuff it,
said Lance. A C+ is nearly a B-.
Enough you two,
said Mrs. Jenkins. Finish your breakfast before it gets cold.
Lance and Misty glared at each other from across the table as they continued to eat in silence.
So, Tyson,
said Mr. Jenkins. Are you ready to go to your new school?
I guess
, said Tyson. But I’m not sure that I’m ready for boarding school. What if I get homesick?
You’ll be fine, dear
, said Mrs. Jenkins. Besides, Emma’s going too, right? At lease you’ll have your best friend with you.
Yeah….
Emma Givens was Tyson’s best friend. They had been best friends since they were assigned to sit next to each other on the very first day of kindergarten. She had been accepted at Cobalt Academy as well.
Mr. Jenkins opened his newspaper again and disappeared behind it, revealing only his fingers. Tyson finished his breakfast, put his dishes in the sink and headed upstairs to take a shower. It took him half an hour to take a shower and get dressed. Once he was done, he went back downstairs to find that his dad was gone.
Where’s Dad?
he asked his mom.
He had to run a few errands,
replied Mrs. Jenkins. Why?
No reason,
said Tyson. I’m going to see Emma.
Okay. Tell her I said hello.
I will.
He then walked out of the house and set off towards Emma’s house. As he walked, he looked at the kids playing in the streets. Apparently they were playing tag, because one kid tagged another so hard, that he fell to the ground, cutting his arm on the asphalt.
Why’d you do that, J.J.?
said the kid that was pushed.
"Oh, stop being such a girl Moises! said the guy named J.J..
It’s just a scratch!"
Tyson sniggered and kept walking. He reached Emma’s house ten minutes later. After he rang the doorbell, he glanced at the garden. There were a lot of different flowers. There were roses, orchids, sunflowers, and a lot of others. Then he looked over at the mailbox and saw a spider attacking a fly that just got caught in the spider’s web. As the spider continued to attack the fly, the fly buzzed and buzzed, and then it went silent.
Wow, your pretty brutal, aren’t you?
asked Tyson to the spider.
Mind your own business, human.
Tyson rolled his eyes as the door opened. An extremely beautiful black girl answered the door. She had long dark hair and very pretty eyes. She was a bit shorter than Tyson.
Hi Tyson,
she said in a soft voice.
Hi Emma,
said Tyson. I was wondering if you wanted to go to the park and hang out.
Sure,
said Emma in her soft voice. Come in, I have to grab my shoes.
She stepped back to let him inside then closed the door behind him.
Go ahead and sit down,
said Emma. Emmett is in the living room, but just ignore whatever he says.
She turned and darted up the stairs.
Tyson made his way to the living room, where he saw Emma’s ten year old brother, Emmett, sitting on the couch playing with a leaf. He threw the leaf up and levitated it for a second, then pointed his finger at the wall, sending the leaf sailing towards it. The leaf got itself stuck.
Emmett, I told you to stop doing that,
said Mrs. Givens, who had just emerged from the kitchen.
Sorry Mom!
said Emmett jumping up to retrieve the leaf.
Hello Tyson,
said Mrs. Givens kindly. How are you?
Hi Mrs. Givens,
said Tyson. I’m fine, how about you?
I’m great,
replied a smiling Mrs. Givens. Are you ready for school?
Kind of. I’m just glad that Emma is going too.
Just then Emma came back downstairs.
Mom, we’re going to the park for a little while,
she said. We’ll be back later.
She grabbed Tyson’s arm and began pulling him towards the front door.
Hang on guys,
said Mrs. Givens. Could you take Emmett with you? I have to go to a meeting and your father has to go to a dentist appointment.
But he’s ten,
protested Emma. Why can’t he watch himself? I stayed home by myself when I was ten.
Yes, but that was different,
said Mrs. Givens. You are more responsible than Emmett.
Fine,
said Emma. Come on Emmett, put on your shoes.
I’d rather eat my left arm,
said Emmett frowning.
Would you rather eat metal?
said Emma producing a block of metal from her right hand.
Stop it both of you,
said Mrs. Givens. Emmett, go and put on your shoes.
Emmet scowled and stomped upstairs grumbling to himself. He came back down seconds later with his shoes on and a remote controlled toy car.
Tyson and Emma were waiting for him at the front door.
You kids be safe,
said Mrs. Givens as the three of them headed out the door. They walked four blocks to the park, Emmett driving his toy car and using it to chase cats and squirrels (Tyson studiously ignoring that particular part). When they got to the park, Tyson and Emma sat on the swings while Emmett played with his toy car.
Did you get all of your stuff for school yet?
asked Tyson.
Yeah,
replied Emma. I finished school shopping yesterday. Did you?
My mom did all of the school shopping yesterday too,
said Tyson. He watched the toy car run into a tree then asked, Do you know how we’ll be getting there? I’ve always went to your house when my parents took Lance and Misty.
I think we get there by a ship,
said Emma.
Must be one big ship,
said Tyson.
The toy car drove around a trash can and underneath a bench. Then a big foot stepped on it, smashing the windows and breaking the mirrors off.
Hey!
exclaimed Emmett. He ran over to his now destroyed toy car.
It shouldn’t have been in my way, kid,
said the person who stepped on the toy car. Emmett looked up to stare at lanky and freckle-faced quintuplets. They all had curly red hair. Their identical green eyes all stared down at Emmett. They looked no older than fourteen.
Tyson and Emma jumped up and ran over to the group.
Why did you step on his car?
asked Emma stepping in front of Emmett.
It was in my way,
said the middle one. Who are you, his parents?
He and his brothers chuckled.
You’d better pay for that,
said Tyson.
And what if I don’t lazy-eyed boy?
said the bully.
I’ll make you,
said Tyson stepping forward and clenching his fists. Emmett followed.
The quintuplets laughed.
Did you hear that, Maven?
said the one on the far left. He said he’ll make you pay!
Yeah I heard,
said the one called Maven. He held out his hand as a ball of fire appeared. I don’t think you want to mess with us.
His brothers conjured fire balls as well.
Tyson and Emmett stepped a little closer but Emma grabbed both of them. Let’s go. They’re Fire Starters. Mom and Dad will get you a new car Emmet.
She steered both of them in the opposite direction, but as they walked away, a rock hit Tyson in the back of his head. He wheeled around to see the quintuplets roaring with laughter.
Tyson and Emmett both broke free of Emma’s grip and charged towards the quintuplets. Tyson changed into a tiger and Emmett sent his razor leaves flying. The quintuplets scattered in different directions. Maven sent a fire ball at Tyson, but Emma had joined the fight and shielded him with a metal wall.
People watched from everywhere. Some laughed at the quintuplets who were getting beat by Tyson, Emma, and Emmett. Finally, the quintuplets gave up and ran away.
Tyson changed back. Ha. We won.
Don’t ever do that again,
said Emma.
"We won though, didn’t we sis? said Emmett.
Stop complaining."
Yeah well let’s get out of here,
said Tyson. Before security comes.
They agreed and began to run home in triumph. And the security guard was indeed on his way.
CHAPTER 2
NEWS OF A PLANNED ROBBERY
Sunday approached just as bright as Saturday had. Tyson woke at nine and went down for breakfast. He finished within a half hour and went back upstairs to pack for school. Lance walked in a few minutes after Tyson. He climbed the ladder to the top bunk, sat down, and began reading a magazine.
Aren’t you going to pack?
asked Tyson.
I got all day for that,
replied Lance not looking up from his magazine.
Tyson shrugged and began to cut holes in his pants so his tail could stick through.
For his uniform, he had to wear black pants, white button up shirts, ties, either a black sweater or vest, and any kind of shoe as long as it was black or white. Girls had to wear the same in the torso area, but they had to wear skirts instead of pants. Long socks were an option on cold or rainy days. A school hoody was allowed to be worn all day, but it was up to the teachers to let them wear it in class.
Tyson finished packing and left the room. He passed by Misty’s room and saw her doing some weird dance. He shook his head and kept walking. When he passed by his parent’s room, he heard his name and doubled back to eavesdrop.
I don’t know, Allen,
Mrs. Jenkins was saying. You and I both know how Tyson’s temper is, and how high his curiosity level is. Who knows what he might try!
I know, Pearl,
said Mr. Jenkins. But he has to go to school! Regardless if the Witch Sisters were planning to rob Cobalt or not! He needs his education.
But you heard him yesterday,
said Mrs. Jenkins. He’s afraid that he might get homesick. Maybe we should take him out of Cobalt and send him to a local school. I don’t think that he is ready for boarding school just yet.
Pearl, you have to let him grow up sometime,
said Mr. Jenkins.
Mrs. Jenkins sighed then said, Ah, maybe your right, honey. I’ll just tell Lance and Misty to keep an eye on him.
Okay,
said Mr. Jenkins. And besides, Emma is a good kid. She’ll keep him out of trouble.
Tyson heard them kiss, giving him the signal to leave. He dashed downstairs and sat on the couch. He tried to soak in every word he just heard from his parents. Who were the Witch Sisters? When were they going to rob Cobalt? What were they going to rob and more importantly, why?
He snapped out of it when Lance came downstairs.
What’s wrong with you?
asked Lance.
Nothing,
said Tyson. He wanted to change the subject so he said, Emma said that we’ll be getting to the school by a ship.
She was right,
said Lance now floating in midair. It takes a whole day to get there by ship so we spend the night on it. Then we get there the next morning and go up to the school. Sixth graders have to get their keys before they go in the building. Then you take your stuff to your room and come back down to breakfast. Then after breakfast, we start classes.
A bit strict don’t you think?
said Tyson.
Not really,
said Lance. You’ll get used to it.
The doorbell rang just as Mrs. Jenkins came down the stairs. When she opened the door, three people stood on
