Linda Surkitt

My name is Linda, and  I was born in London in the 1950's I have 3 grown up children who are married and have 10 children, between them, so I am a busy grand-mother. These stories were inspired when I was on holiday in wales, and whilst watching the animals play the stories started to form in my mind. My grandchildren loved them, so I thought why not write about them, and thats how they were first thought off. I decided to publish them so other children could have the opportunity  of enjoying them aswell. I also have a web page for you to visit which enables you to see pictures that are in my book, and a sneek preview of my next book. www.lifeinhedgerow.com come and visit.

The hedge had just been cut – it was just before spring. Everyone living in the hedge was full of excitement because it was time to clear out the old nests, get the burrows tidy, and build new nests ready for the coming summer which would bring the new chicks and babies of the season.

The families that lived in and around the hedge all knew each other, and through the years often helped each other with different things. These stories will tell you about some of the events that have taken place throughout the year and the fun, laughter and tears the animals have shared.

It was springtime and there was a rumpus in the swallow’s nest. Mrs Swallow was chirping happily, because her clutch of eggs had hatched. She was busy preening the new chicks, looking at them with pride. She had already decided in her mind what she was going to call them. The little hen chick she would call Miss Chick Downey because she was so soft. The two little male chicks she would call Mac and Duff; they looked a handsome pair.

Mr Swallow had heard the news of the arrivals from the magpie, Maggie Eydawake. She was the head of the hedge. It was as though she had been there forever and she seemed to know everything. She was a big plump bird, with white blades down her side and midnight blue down her back. She would strut up and down the hedge checking all was ok and she picked up anything that shone or sparkled. She lived in the fir tree at the end of the garden next to the oak tree. She did love the smell of pine.

Mrs Swallow greeted Mr Swallow with a peck on his cheek. ‘Hello dear,’ she said ‘don’t you think they are the cutest?’, looking at her chicks with pride and love. Mr Swallow, standing tall chest out as full as it could be, chirped the news out so everyone would know about his new chicks. And with his head held high he started to sing.

Meanwhile in the hedge the other animals were getting together to arrange a party, to celebrate the
