Avoiding Stress: Strategies for Life Extension
()
About this ebook
For the most part, this book will show you a way to avoid having too much stress in your life. It does not promise to make life stress free. Instead, it gives you a method of living by certain formulas and concepts designed to help you cope with the trials and tribulations of everyday life. It is meant to help with the common dilemmas found in a society that is not beset with life and death decisions at every turn. Using the ideas,
methods, formulas and concepts suggested in this book makes it possible to live life in a reasonably relaxed manner.
Joseph Rosner
Dr. Rosner is an eighty-one-year-old New York-born psychologist and hypnotherapist who has lived through the Great Depression, fought in WW II, traveled to over twenty countries and has now voted in fifteen presidential elections. He has decades of experience in managing stress and of helping others overcome their own problems with stress. This book is a product of his wisdom and the work of his family and of many 'graduated' patients who believe in Dr. Rosner's outlook on life and the importance of sharing that outlook with others.

Introduction
Because I am a hypnotherapist at heart, the format of this book is that of a mini-hypnosis session. A book as a hypnotic device is an unusual concept. Throughout the text, you will find concepts repeated and reinforced, perhaps more like the lyrics of a song than like an essay. But try to allow the words and concepts to sink in. When confronted with an upsetting situation, I want you to hear my words, When we are objective, we will usually be able to solve the problem,
calmly stated in the back of your mind. The book is brief so that it can be read over and over again, and hopefully you will find the stories meaningful, and the ideas comforting. Many of these are not my ideas, but the ideas of my father, and I still hear him speaking to me, and find these strategies comforting and calming in my own life.
If
By Rudyard Kipling
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream–and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the will which says to them: Hold on!
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings–nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a man, my son!
Session One: The Meaning of Life
Recently, after eighty-one years of life, I realized the meaning of life is solving problems. And success at solving life’s problems is a good functional definition for success in life.
Mental Health
As a therapist, my goal is to express to you the secrets to mental health that will help you make the right decisions so that you will solve life’s problems and achieve success and happiness. Mental health means that we use reason, not emotion, to solve our problems.
Don’t let rage be your first response. When fear, rage or guilt makes our decisions, we lose. Dependency follows.
It’s not easy to discard the emotional response we typically use because emotions comfort us and overwhelm reason. Our use of emotions, not reason, makes us a prisoner of these emotions. Thus we are dependent and not free of them as a pattern of our life. It takes some practice. But when we are objective, we will usually be able to solve the problem.
The Search for Objectivity
