About this ebook

A holocaust is coming to Earth in the form of a deadly virusone that will bring pandemonium and disaster to all. To survive, a wealthy billionaire named Simion builds a gigantic complex in the side of a mountain. He becomes a modern-day Noah, bringing in two of each living creature and providing protection for all those working on the top-secret project.

When the day of reckoning arrives, one of Simions key people, Zack, is home attending to his fathers funeral. Too far away to make it to the complex, Zack has no choice but to stay put and watch the destruction around him. Incredibly, Zack discovers he is immune to the virus. He finds six other survivors, and the small group is determined to stay alive, no matter the obstacles they face.

The group begins the long, arduous journey to find the compound, but as the years pass and Zack grows more and more confused as to its exact location, hope begins to run out. Yet before his death, Zack passes on the information to his children; now it is up to them to find Simions complex. Only then will the future of the world be secure.

Unique in scope, So It Begins is a riveting tale of how one individuals foresight and intellect becomes mankinds last hope.

Dedicated to my husband for his hard work in helping me.

To my sons and mother because I love them.

You there! the order came from Simion. Put that there, we will move it later. Simion couldn’t believe his great fortune. He could see the tides changing in the world and had been working for years on his pet project.

The purchase of the old mine shaft was just the beginning. He had so much work to do and had done so much already. Most of his equipment had to be helicoptered in. This place was so remote, but that was the beauty of it.

The workers had to be hand picked for this project and had their families with them. The truth was not to be told to them. It was a project for the future. They were told to build a place as if it were a great spaceship getting ready to travel to a distant planet. Everything had to be considered from food, shelter, power and so on. Simion was sure it would be a haven when the war came. It had to be far enough away from the hoards of people escaping from the cities as their food and resources ran out, to find it.

Simion was brilliant beyond his years. The mine was perfect. Most of the heavy digging had been done, now it was getting the power, water, and air and making sure that no one could see it from the outside. He thought of everything, water purification, recycling, everything. The underground spring water was just one of the blessings he had with his old mine.

When they had been excavating the animal area near the spring they discovered huge caverns carved by years gone by. These caverns would serve as the growing domes and the animals could be housed down another tunnel.

Simion felt like Noah getting ready for the great flood, but this had to go far beyond that. Deep in his heart, when the time came, all these people may be the last left on the planet and he was going to make sure they survived.

As he did the hiring, he looked at all kinds of different races and professions. Genetic diversity was maybe the only hope.

Zack Simion yelled. Zack was a good man and an excellent foreman.

Zack went over to the edge and started barking orders. The men complied.

The sun was high in the sky when the lunch bells rang.

The women had been cooking all morning for the men. The children had been in the school that was almost complete now.

The Agro tunnel was well on its way and the women and children had put up the ideas for recreational space.

The helicopters kept coming and so did the supplies, everything from plants to seeds, to wiring. The water would generate power. Simion the ever protective boss overseeing the things he ordered did in fact arrive.

Simion was leaning over a makeshift desk examining some maps when Zack arrived to tell him the masons were well on to finish the outside wall.

Simion smiled. Look here Zack. Do you know why I chose this location?

Zack glanced at the map looking over the topography and realized this mountain range was almost in a full circle and in the middle of a huge valley. He thought for a minute. Simion had made an error in judgement. Why were they on the other side of the range when such a splendid valley was over the top of this mountain? He was about to mention this to Simion when he heard the lunch bell again.

Bells, why bells, he said to Simion?

Simion smiled. Some things in life just have beauty and bells are far nicer than a horn blasting your eardrums out.

They both laughed as they made their way into the old mine.

Well, Zack asked Simion What do you think of the cavern? They found fresh spring water and from the tests it appears to be as fresh as the world is old.

Simion smiled. Yes indeed he replied, Seems it even has a current to it. This had possibilities. His mind was beyond this. He was planning water wheels for electricity that would be further help concealing this place.

Simmy, Simmy, there you are sweetie. Up the hall came Simion’s wife Rainie.

Zack couldn’t believe this woman. She was no asset to Simion. Simion’s dear wife was selfish to the bone. Whatever beauty may have been there was erased by her self-serving over bearing self-righteousness.

Hi there Rainie, Zack said trying to smile. She as usual, gave him the cold glance up and down as if she was asserting her superiority over him. After all, she was the wife of the benefactor of this whole project.

Simmy, when are you taking me to see my friends in the Alps, we have a skiing trip planned and all this construction is so dreary?

Soon Rainie soon, He couldn’t bring himself to tell her that the political state of the world was in a desperate state. Three major countries were all threatening each other. There were so many things the masses were kept blind to. Mass panic would be the result so they had to keep a lot of it quiet.

Let’s go get our lunch. I have worked up a hunger like no other I’ve had for a while. Simion smiled at them and they made their way to the lunchroom.

The sound of the helicopter drifted down the valley to Simion and Rainie. She was beaming and hugged Simion. Don’t worry Simmy, I’ll be back soon, she giggled. I can’t wait to hit the slopes and relax later in the spa. She watched the chopper land and this was the last dust she would have blown in her hair for a while she thought. She blew him a kiss and couldn’t get into the helicopter fast enough.

Simion stared at her as she climbed in and waved at her. He had a foreboding feeling it wouldn’t be for much longer. She would adapt he told himself. He had faith in her.

He turned and headed into the tunnel. The cavern they had exposed was perfect for the Agrodome. He had workers non-stop getting it ready for the garden.

Everything had to be considered, the lights, the humidity and the air, if he was to grow an Eden it had to be perfect. The underground water could be used for a fish farm. Maybe he could give that some thought.

Sir, sir a moment, please Dirk said. He was a short fellow and Simion thought oddly featured, but when it came to animal waste, the man was a genius.

    What is it Dirk?

    Well sir.

    Please Dirk, call me Simion.

Well Simion, the tanks for recycling the animal waste are completed. The tunnels growing the feed Alfalpha and grasses have proven exceptional, as well as productive. We can soon house the animals. The methane from the tanks can provide the gas for everything you want it piped to. The remaining waste can be used for nutrients for future planting. The bio waste from the people can be used as well and the water purifiers are in place now.

What about the workshops Dirk? Has the waste from there been piped in?

Yes sir and it’s a go.

Things are falling into order. The place was coming together well. The air filters would have to be cleaned and monitored. If the air was going out all the time, nothing could get in, but the outside air would still need to be monitored for radioactivity, he thought Thank you Dirk.

Dirk looked up When are you expecting the animals, sir?

Soon, soon, just a few more things then the trial runs. Outer space look out, we are almost out there. If this works, we can travel to distant planets my friend. He hated lying to them, but what other way would it be believable?

Simion headed to the library. Andy my friend how goes it? he asked.

Andy peered up from the books he was working on. Well sir, all the people here is registered. It will be a great honour to be in this book of construction.

Be sure all the members’ families are there. Without the women and children here, the men couldn’t get the work done. Make sure the women that are technicians are also named in there with the men. List them in order of status not gender.

    Already done, Andy replied.

Thank you my good man, Simion added as he left the library and headed to the workshops.

Dee was there with her work clothes covered with sawdust. She was one of the best carpenters he had ever seen. She had a flare for design. He watched as she smoothed the wood with a sander, then stopped and felt the texture with her hand as if she was touching some delicate flower petal. She stopped and turned towards him. The bright smile told him she was pleased with her project.

    Hi there Sim, Dee beamed.

"Hi Dee, are you making any progress?

Yes indeed, she replied. Im just putting the finishing touches on the living quarters, might as well get the feeling of home in here. All this stone in here doesn’t have the homey feeling that a few sticks of furniture can get you. Hey Sim, why are you flying all this wood in with all the wood there is in the valley?

Now Dee, where would the bears sleep if we used up their forest?

    Point taken, she smiled.

Simion went down to the labs. This was his domain. This is where it all would be held together. He had doctors and a full medical centre set up. He had a library full of medical books. They would be the teachers for the next generation. It never hurts to have the doctors ranging in ages. He had the cream of the crop, the best of the best. Things are almost ready. It would be here in the science study tunnel that any problems would be solved and he felt at ease here. He could think without the buzz of the activities going on around in the tunnels. He was thinking of the monorail of some sort driven magnetically, pure, clean and possible. The tunnels one day would be a honeycomb in this mountain. It would be too far to walk.

Just then, Zack strolled in. Hey Sim, look at what I found here in your own kitchens.

Simion looked up and before him were two glasses and a chilled bottle of wine. Zack poured out two glasses and held one to Simion. He took the wine and Zack proposed a toast. To all here and a project worthy of mankind completed.

Simion tapped Zack’s glass and Drank. So Zack are you staying on for the trial run? I could use you here.

Zack stared at him Why not? He said? It’s been a good project might as well see it through to the end. With all the construction near completion, I wasn’t sure you wanted me to stay.

Zack my dear friend, without you it never would have gotten this far. They tapped their glasses and proceeded to finish the bottle. About halfway through the bottle, Zack looked at Simion and said So what got you started here? Was it a military project or government? You never did say.

Simion sat back in his chair. Well, it’s my project. I have paid for the works.

Zack couldn’t believe his ears. He knew Simion was wealth, but this, this was immense and the cost must have been at least a billion or more.

Simion looked at Zack. Come on, I want to show you something. Simion got up and headed out of the office and down a different tunnel.

Zack downed his glass of wine and soon was right behind Simion.

They soon entered the Communications room. Five people staffed it.

    Good evening Sir, Warren spoke.

Zack glanced around. There was a TV screen covering one wall. All had news bulletins and various battles going on all over the world. Zack for the first time realized there was far more to this project than just a case study on interplanetary travel.

Simion crossed his arms and then one hand reached up and ran his fingers through his hair. Here we can see via satellite everything going on in the world.

    Warren, status, please."

The present talks in the east are going well. The west and east are at a stand still. The countries in the north have been developing nuclear power as were some smaller countries.

Thanks Warren. Everything is still okay then?

Simion turned to Zack. You see my friend he said as he turned and started walking down the hall, it is my belief that the greed for oil and gold will soon drive one of these countries to start a war. When this happens the world will fall into chaos.

Zack was kind of stunned. "Are you telling me the world on the verge of a nuclear war?

I believe so Zack, yes I do believe so.

So, this whole thing is a nuclear shelter then?

Something like that Zack, yes, something like that.

Zack stood looking at this man. He wasn’t sure if he was losing it or if he was telling the truth.

I would appreciate it if you kept this to yourself Zack. I can trust you in this?

Zack was still not sure what to think, but he agreed. He pondered what he had just been told and though, Well, Simion could do what he wanted with his money. People had been predicting doomsday for ever. Simion was still a good guy and his money was as good as anyone’s. It paid the bills.

Simion looked up and said I have a few things to do. I will talk to you later. He walked down the tunnel and entered his office again. Before closing the door, Zack heard him say Get my wife on the line please and the door closed.

Zack wasn’t sure what to think about what was going on here for real. He had agreed to keep quiet and headed to the carpentry tunnel.

Dee, as usual, was looking over some plans. Zack loved how her brow furrowed when she was designing something. She was charming. He loved her matter her fact ways and how she called a spade a spade. It was refreshing to have a woman so straightforward. She had deep green eyes and auburn hair. It was shoulder length and bounced a little when she walked. Her slim figure was always concealed in her coveralls and steel-toed sneakers.

He walked up behind her and slowly encased her in his arms.

With a start, she turned and that bright smile Zack so enjoyed beamed at him. He kissed and he felt her melting. Oh, how he loved her and knew she loved him.

You know relationships between co-workers are not in the best taste? she whispered. He laughed and she did too. Then out of the blue, she looked at him and said we need to get married and the sooner the better.

He stood there holding her close when he realized what she was saying. He hugged her tight and lifted her a few inches off the ground. He said I love you.

I guess it’s I love you too she smiled. In her mind somewhere it was a relief. She wanted what was happening. Let’s keep this quiet she said to Zack and smiled. Whatever you want my woodcarver. They laughed.

Why don’t you go get some rest, Dee said to Zack? I have to figure this out and you look like you need some.

Zack kissed her on the cheek and headed out the door.

Boy, this was the day for things to happen, Simion first and now Dee. With all these secrets, I think I need another drink.

Zack headed to the kitchen. He had some brandy there and he could use one.

Down two more tunnels and he was there. He rounded the corner and there sat Simion. He was drinking coffee and talking with the head cook about the amount of stores in the back. Paula assured him everything was in order and he sat back down looking at the papers before him. Zack could see the strain.

Zack, Simion said, Come look at this will you?

Zack sat down across from him and glanced at the paper work. What do you think? How long to build this do you think? Well, three weeks at least, if we have to excavate more tunnels. No, no, no we can build it here. This is still all open. Zack had to agree it was a better spot closer to the living area. I want people to have the ability to do whatever crafts, hobbies they wish.

Simion thought of everything. Zack couldn’t believe he was so devoted to this. Maybe he knew something most of the rest did not.

Out of the blue, Simion said Rainie is coming back thank goodness. I don’t like her flittering here and there. She wastes her time so much. With so much to do, she still wants to play. Well Zack said, She is younger than you Simion and women will be women."

A smile crossed both their faces.

Did you know that Rainie could sculpt and paint wonderfully Zack? She is amazing.

Zack couldn’t see how this man could love her so much, but then to each their own. He asked Simion, So when were you married? We’ve been married ten years now and it’s the best move I ever made.

Zack didn’t like Rainie much, but she wasn’t his wife thank everything Holy.

Simion stared at Zack, When are you going to bite the bullet and get yourself a wife? Actually, there is someone and we are going to get married as soon as we can. Speaking of which, Simion, I need to have a few weeks off.

Simion looked at Zack Do I know this lucky lady? Zack smiled, Well, here’s a secret for you. It’s Dee and we need to get married as soon as possible.

Simion laughed, You and Dee, that’s grand. You have picked a wonderful person. She’s a doll. I like her, Simion said.

How come you need to get married? Before the words left his mouth the realization hit him. Well, well, well he said. I think I understand. You two come to my office in the morning.

Zack’s mouth fell open. He wasn’t sure if he should have told him. Before Zack could say anything, Simion got up and said See you two in the morning.

Zack thought, well I guess its walking paper time. How is he going to tell Dee? She asked him to keep it quiet, because she lover her job here.

    He did need that drink.

Zack headed for the living quarters, he had to talk to Dee. She was going to be furious. I just best tell her and be done with it. If they had to go, his parent’s farm would be a good place until they could get something better. Dad was getting up in years and mom was not that spry anymore. They wanted him home for sometime now. The farm was great; peaceful and quiet. I wonder if it still had the old phone line or if mom had upgraded to cell phones yet?

It was at this time he arrived at Dee’s dorm. Tap, tap Dee, Dee he said. Doors open Zack come in. I was just ready to jump into the shower. Pour yourself a drink and make me one too. I think there is some Mango juice in the fridge, Hun. With that Dee turned on the shower.

Zack poured two drinks of juice and moved to the table. How do I tell her He thought as he got up; running his hands over his head? He paced while Dee showered.

The water turned off. Dee said Did you get some time off? What did Sim say? Was he ticked off about you leaving? I’ll see him tomorrow. I ran late tonight, got a wall unit for the school I want to finish.

Dee stepped out of the shower room, towel drying her hair and wearing a purple fuzzy wrap. Dee, sit down please Zack said. From the look on Zack’s face, she said What’s wrong? Simion want us both in his office in the morning. I kinda, well sort of…told him, Dee. It just slipped out. I’m sorry.

Dee looked at Zack. Well, she said, to the office we go. If he fires us, it’s not the only job in the world. We are great at what we do. I’m not worried, besides I will have to leave soon anyway. I didn’t want to work full time till the baby comes.

Zack knew now why he loved her. Relief spread over him. I love you he said and leaned over the table and kissed her.

Ah, get out of here you; I’m calling it an early night. If Simion wants to fire me he is going to be firing a woman that’s had a good night’s beauty sleep.

    They laughed.

Ok sweetie, I’ll pick you up at eight sharp. With that he clicked his heals and saluted. Dee threw a towel at him. Go on with you then.

He opened the door and headed towards his office. Well that never hurt at all he thought smugly.

On arriving at his office he sat at his desk and gave out a sigh. If nothing else it had been a great project. Simion had been a great boss and he had found Dee; losses and gains.

He started thinking about what Simion said about the state of the world affairs. Simion was a brilliant man and his wealth had afforded him contacts the world over. Zack hadn’t paid much mind of the news in the past few years. He had been too busy here. He yawned, maybe he should head to bed, and it’s been a long day. He leaned back in his chair with his feet on his desk and drifted off to sleep.

Simion had been up for hours. Rainie was due to arrive at noon. He had a surprise for Zack and Dee as well. He stood up, ah yes I put it there he thought. It was a ring from his mother, just a small band and intricately carved. Rainie was not fond of his mother’s jewellery, so why not give it to Zack for Dee? She would appreciate that he knew that.

Tap, tap on the door. Come in Simion said.

    Zack and Dee walked in.

Sit down Simion said. Simion Zack started. Simion looked at him. Before we get started here, I want to give you something. Zack stood, staring at him confused.

Simion opened a small ring box and gave it to Zack. It was my mother’s and I want you and Dee to have it. You will need to get married here. Did you know that I’m a justice of the peace Zack? Simion beamed at Dee, Ok, over here you two.

Simion read the vows and had the papers signed. When the ceremony was over, Simion brought out a tray with three glasses on it. After the toast to the bride and good health, long life, etc…they drank. To Dee’s surprise it was apple juice. What a day. Married and still employed she thought. What will happen next?

Warren appeared at the door. Zack, there is a message in the communications room for you. I hate to interrupt, but it’s important. Zack looked at Dee, then at Simion. I guess I had best see what it is.

Zack followed Warren to the communications room, Here it is sir Warren said. Zack read the following words. Come home, father is in a bad way. I don’t believe he is long for this world, son. Please hurry, love mom. Zack couldn’t believe his eyes. He sighed and thanked Warren. He then headed back to Simion’s office.

When he arrived, Simion and Dee were laughing. Simion looked over and said not bad news I hope? Dee knew by the look on his face that something was wrong. What is it? Dee asked. Yes what is it? Simion asked.

It’s my father, he is in a bad way and my mother wants me to come home. I’ll start packing Dee said. No, no Dee, you stay here. It might be mother is over reacting.

Simion spoke up Well Rainie is due shortly. You can go back out on the chopper that’s bringing her in. Fine, Simion, thank you. Dee I need to speak to you, excuse us Simion please and thank you for everything. You are a good man. Simion smiled, you get back here, and we need you.

I will, I promise you that. He looked at his wife Dee. When he got out in the hallway, Zack looked at Dee. It will be probably be ok, but if not I will send for you right away. Dee looked at him and replied Ok, but let me know right away. She hugged him. I have to pack, that chopper will be here in 30 minutes.

He was throwing his shaving gear into his bag as Dee watched. Some wedding night for you Zack said. No worries she replied. You will be back soon, we are not eighteen years old and moonstruck you know. Yes I know Dee, but it wasn’t really how I thought it would be. Variety is the spice of life she said. It was just like Dee to be so cool and collected.

They were approaching the chopper pad. Zack looked into Dee’s eyes and knew he would never love another like he loved her. He pulled her to him and kissed her.

Simmy, Simmy Rainie stopped in her tracks and looked at Zack and Dee. Well, well she said as she passed. Simion met her at the door and they went inside.

"Come on Sir, we’ve got to go, a storm is moving in and we have a four hour flight ahead of us.

Zack threw his bags in and kissed Dee one more time. She turned and walked into the complex. Dee was not a wishy washy, but she did think she got a bit ripped off on her wedding day.

She walked down the hall, Simion, who had been talking to Rainie, told her to hold up. Minute dear Simion said to Rainie. Simion walked over to Dee and hugged her. It’s ok Sim Dee said. He will be back before we know it. Simion smiled and said yes he will.

Rainie stood there looking, what’s going on here? One skiing trip and she moves in on the men she thought. Simmy, are you leaving me standing here all night? No dear, not at all he replied. You go rest Dee, we will talk later. Dee nodded and headed for her dorm. Well finally I have your undivided attention Rainie said. Simion smiled You must tell me what’s been going on around here. Let’s get some lunch and at that the bell rang. It’s good to have you home dear Simion said and kissed her on the cheek. He tucked her arm under his and they headed to the lunch room.

The chopper pilot was right, the cloud cover was thick. Zack never paid much attention to the scenery, he always seemed to be reading something that was work related and now he had the chance to look, but the clouds were covering everything.

You do much flying out here? Zack asked the pilot. Yes sir, a lot of heli-logging in this area; not much else. A few souls looking for remote fishing spots, but that’s about it.

Zack sat back and let his thoughts drift. He started thinking about his dad, how happy he always was. Zack was a success although he never took to the farm his father was proud of him. Mother never seemed to mind, not much riled her. She was a rock, steadfast. Dee reminded him of her.

What a turn of events, things never seemed to stop amazing him. He thought of the baby; hope it’s a girl and it looks just like Dee.

It wasn’t long before the pilot said we will be landing soon, sir. It was Simion’s private landing strip and a jet was waiting to take him further. Then a three hour drive to his hometown and we will see how dad is.

The day passed and Zack finally arrived at Cambry. It was a small little town of no consequence. He left his rental car in the driveway and made his way to the house. He strolled through the door and no one was home. Mom must be with dad.

He went out to his car and grabbed his luggage and put it in the hall foyer. It was a long day, jet lag still got him. He went to the fridge, grabbed a cold soda and lay on the couch. It wasn’t long before he was sleeping.

Zack, Zack, dear Zack. Zack opened his eyes and there was his mom. He sat up, smiled and hugged her. How is dad he asked? Not doing well sweetie. I’ve been told to get his affairs in order his mom told him; Zack sighed. Then this is it, dad was passing. He could feel the tears welling up inside, but he had to be strong for his mom. We will go see him tomorrow Zack agreed. He got up and said Want some tea mom? That would be lovely dear, I’m so tired tonight. It’s been a long day." Zack headed for the kitchen.

He wanted to tell his mother about Dee, but thought he would wait a few days. The next days would surely be a strain. He took the tea and they sat in the living room as mom talked of father’s condition.

Zack and his mother spent the next day visiting father and getting things in order. He could see the strain it put on her as she spoke with lawyers, of course she would have to notify the friends and the few relatives of this. When she walked out of the post office after posting the mail to the ones who lived in York, Zack thought how pale and frail she had become. He had been gone too long he thought.

Zack helped her into the car and headed east to the farm. On their arrival, mom soon had the kettle on. Then it came, the phone call they were dreading. Mother answered and after a few moments he heard her say Thank you for the call, yes I will be fine, my son is here with me.

Zack went to the kitchen and sat at the table with his mom. She wept softly. It’s done then she said. I’m glad he passed so quickly. I don’t think I could have endured him to linger for a long time. They spoke little, both understanding each others pain. Finishing her tea, his mother said I think I’ll go lay down for a while. She went to her room and closed the door. Zack knew she needed to be alone.

He got up and went to the porch. Looking out over the farm he thought of Dee. I better fill her in on what’s going on. He got out his cell phone and it wasn’t long before Dee was on the other end. Hi sweetie, are things going ok? Is father alright? Your mom? she inquired. Dee are you sitting down? Oh dear! she said. Go ahead Zack. Well father passed away today, we will be having the funeral in three days. Dee said I’ll start packing. No, no Dee you stay there, I’ll be back soon. I don’t want you to come at the moment. It’s pretty hectic and I haven’t even told mom about you yet. With everything that’s been going on I couldn’t just blurt it out. I will miss and love you. I love you too Zack, I guess I could make the school furniture while you are gone. Zack smiled Dee, never mind I will call soon. I love you. Love you too. Bye, Bye.

Zack wondered if she would like it here. He never cared for the farm. Not enough to do, other than just work, but then Dee would make home happy wherever it was.

He was now strolling around the farm. Father had sold most of the animals. They only had a few chickens left. Mom loved her chickens. He smiled to himself. He spent the evening of the porch, thinking of the days he had spent here when he was young.

The next few days passed quickly and mom never had to cook anything. The neighbours and people from the church brought plenty. Zack was glad there were so many people coming and going, it kept his mind off the funeral.

Tomorrow we bury him mom said. Zack looked at her. Tomorrow will be a long day she said and with the wake after. Yes was all Zack could say, there wasn’t much too say and too much talk would just make them cry. So they just sat in quiet contemplation of things that had been and never would be again.

Zack had phoned Dee several times in the last week. She told him how Simion had the place busy as ever with all the animals and plants. They were just working out the last minute details before he started up full force. Simion had assured Zack that he still needed him, but told him to take his time.

The funeral went well and his dad was laid to rest. Zack had fears of them dropping the casket. Thank goodness nothing happened for mom’s sake.

The wake was hectic, full of old stories and the good times they all shared. After the last person left, mom closed the door, went to her chair and cried her heart out. After an hour or two, Zack wasn’t sure how long, she went to bed.

Zack, alone now did his crying, being quiet so as not to disturb his mom. He lay there for hours before sleep finally took hold.

Zack was up late, his mom was up early and they sat at the table not saying much. The farm is yours now she said. Zack told her No it’s yours. So you are leaving again? she said. Mom I need to talk to you, but it just didn’t seem like the right time. What is it Zack? she replied. Well I’m married. He said. Married, my goodness Zack, why didn’t you tell me?

It was then the phone rang. Is your mother there? the voice said. Yes, yes, I will get her, one moment please. Yes, yes, yes, we are feeling fine, Ok thank you Frank. Mother hung up the phone. Oh my, it seems there is a flu epidemic, lots of folks are sick. Gee, when it rains it pours.

The phone rang again; it was Zack’s cell this time. Zack it’s me Simion, you had better get to the TV and see what’s going on. Some things are not right he said. People are getting sick, seems its world wide. Zack said to Simion do me a favour and keep her there with you my friend. Sure, no problem, but you better get back here soon Zack. I don’t like what’s going on Simion said. Yes, I just need a couple more days. I have to get my mother to town, she will probably be better off there. Right, call me and keep me informed, my good man Simion replied Sure will. Don’t waste too much time Zack.

Zack wasn’t sure what to do. Mother, that was my boss, he seems to think this is more than just a flu epidemic. Who has a TV around here? Mother thought for a moment that would be Hazel, the third farm on the right. Let me get my purse.

It wasn’t long before they were at Hazel’s and she was more than glad to have company. She had been a widow for many years now. Hazel mom said We need to watch your TV for a while. Hazel just looked at them and said Sure, come into the living room.

Zack turned it on and went through the channels until he found the news broadcast. This is SKTS news broadcast. People are being advised to stay in their homes. It appears we are having a nation wide pandemic going on. Do not go to the city. Only go to seek medical help. The military has been called out to keep the riots under control. Please stay at home. If you the flu like symptoms, only then seek medical help. We will update this bulletin in one hour.

Zack cell phone rang again, it was Dee. Simion closed up the project. He has told everyone if they wished to go, now is the time. I want to come to you Zack she was crying. Oh my God, no Dee, stay there. You will be safe there. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. I just have to get mom closer to town. Oh Zack I want to be with you she cried more. It’s ok Dee you stay where you are.

It was then his mother said in a loud voice You listen to him; this is your mother talking. Did you hear her Dee? Yes, yes she said still weeping. I’ll be back soon he told her and Hugs too he said as he heard the click of the phone.

Hazel, mom and Zack sat on the couch. My goodness, what is happening in the world? Hazel said It’s just like after the wars, we had many sick then too. Yes that’s the truth Zack’s mom said. They said to stay home, guess that may help not spread it more.

Oh my goodness, Freda said Hazel, how unkind, I’m sorry for your loss. Zack’s mom smiled slightly at Hazel Thank you lets make some tea.

The two women headed for the kitchen. Hazel looked at Zack Are you going to look at that idiot box all day? Zack smiled yeah, I want to see the next bulletin. I will bring you some tea, Zack nodded.

The hour passed and the next bulletin was worse than the first. People in the big cities were panicking. There were riots and now it seemed that the whole world had out breaks. The scientists were working around the clock.

Zack, Freda and Hazel stood in the living room, stunned. Hazel spoke first good God, what’s the matter with people? All that crazy business will not help. They are afraid Freda said. Folks get crazy when they are afraid.

Zack was stunned, he knew there was more to this than they knew. The two old women had no idea what really was going on. It was Cambry, all the cities, major cities in all the countries. This was not just a simple flu outbreak.

Zack got on the phone, Simion, my God, what’s going on? Simion replied They did it, they finally did it. It’s a virus, man made. They let is loose. Zack are you sick? No, no, not yet Zack said. Then get masks, this is going to be bad, really bad. Any idea what might help? Zack asked. As far as we can tell, it’s attacking everyone, only some are not affected. Not sure yet, but will keep you informed. Thanks Zack said. Get back here Simion said. I have to get my mom safe. Zack, don’t wait too long, it’s getting worse. I’ll keep in touch.

Zack looked at the two women in the kitchen, and couldn’t believe what was happening. He just couldn’t leave them. He wanted to get back to Dee, to safety. This was turning really bad.

Mom, we have to go he said abruptly. Hazel looked at Freda, Ok, ok let’s go home. Freda said Thank you Hazel, I’ll call you tomorrow. He knew his mom had no idea what was going on. How would she? Oh, my God, he thought.

Zack was driving back to the farm too fast and his mom made him slow down. Zack just what do you think you can do today? This day’s half over. Zack looked at her We are leaving as soon as we pack. His mom just looked at him. She chose not to argue in the car, but when they get home she thought.

It wasn’t long before Zack pulled into the farm. He helped his mom out of the car and they made their way to the house.

Once inside Zack started to get his things together. I’m not going, his mother said. What, what did you say? I’m not going anywhere she replied. Mom there is a virus loose out there and it’s killing people Zack said. I’m not going she announced again. Look mom, maybe you don’t understand, we have to leave. We can go to where I work its safe there. Zack I’m not going. The TV said stay put. Do you think for one minute that they would say that if they want people travelling, passing it to others? Everything I know is here; I’m not going to run away because of that flu bug. We worked hard to build this place. I’m not going to run; besides I’m too old and tired."

Zack was beside himself with frustration. How could he make her understand? Well we will talk in the morning, it will be alright she told him and closed the door to her room.

Zack could have screamed with frustration. He pulled out his cell phone. Argh, the batteries were dead. He went to his mom’s phone, picked up the receiver and thought, maybe she was right. What could they do tonight, really?

He sat down. How did things get so out of order? He was so happy, Dee, and now the baby. He still wished for a girl, then dad and now this. I need a drink; there was just cola, water and tea. Pick one he thought.

He grabbed a cola and headed for the porch for some fresh air. What was he doing? Simion said, get a mask. He needed a list. He had to try and get some masks, batteries and gas. He had to phone Simion. He would have to send the jet and chopper. He lingered over the list. What would mom need? By now it was late and tomorrow was going to be tough.

He woke to the telephone. His mom answered, Yes, Oh dear, Yes, now Hazel, I’ll be right there.

Zack she said, noting that he was awake. That was Hazel. Drive me over there would you? Mom we have to pack, we need to go. You are driving me to Hazel’s. I don’t want to hear another word.

She grabbed her shawl and purse and was already at the door. Zack thought, I will get what we need from town, while she is there. Then we are going he thought no more excuses.

Zack pulled in the drive and stopped the car. I’m running into town while you are here. No she said. What Zack replied? No, come in.

Zack turned off the car. His mom was already on her way in. She never knocked, just walked in. There inside was Hazel. She sat in a chair by the phone. Zack, make some tea please his mom said.

As he passed, he knew Hazel was sick. After an hour or so, Freda had convinced Hazel to go to the hospital. Zack helped her get into the car. Zack was scared; he didn’t want to touch her. She had the virus. This was getting worse by the minute.

For crying out loud Zack, help me, his mom hollered at him. He did and they soon had her in the car and on their way to the small medical centre in Cambry.

It’s ok Hazel, I won’t leave you Freda assured her. She wasn’t sure she could hear what she had said, but she pulled the blanket around Hazel; it will be ok, you’ll see."

They had driven what seemed to be ages and finally arrived at the medical centre. It was pandemonium, there were sick people everywhere. All sick, Zack couldn’t believe it. How could it spread so fast? He knew he was in trouble, big trouble. He sat there with his mom and Hazel, looking at the people.

We have to leave mom, now. I’m not leaving Zack. It was about then he realized that his mom was sick too. Good God, she had the virus too. He wanted to run, but he couldn’t leave her.

He looked around and knew he was going to die. It seemed forever before a nurse finally came over to them. She said I’m sorry, but there are no doctors available at present. Zack said I beg your pardon. Where are they? Is this not a hospital? The nurse looked at Zack and said They are all sick, sir. She was looking at Hazel. Oh dear, then she looked at Freda. Please bring this woman Zack looked at the nurse but they both are sick. She looked at Zack There is nothing we can do for this one. It was then Zack realized that Hazel was dead.

He picked up his mom and followed the nurse, there were people everywhere. The nurse stumbled, she almost fell. Are you ok Zack asked? Put her here and Zack laid his mom on a stretcher. He noted that the nurse did not look well. Are you ok? She looked up and said I’m dying like the rest, the doctors are gone and there is no one to help.

Is this woman a relative? Yes, she is my mom. She is passing, I’m sorry; there is nothing I can do. She started to leave. Zack grabbed her arm, where are you going he demanded? Just here she said and sat down and closed her eyes. You best talk to her, she hasn’t long."

Zack was horrified. He couldn’t leave his mom as she lay dying. He stood beside her for the longest time. She never spoke, she never opened her eyes again; she just died.

He wasn’t sure how long he stood there, but when he turned to the nurse, she was dead. He had to get out here. He lovingly wrapped his mom in the blankets. He headed to the door and stumbled over the people coming in. He made his way to the parking lot and placed his mom’s body in the back seat. He got into the car and regrouped. He said to himself, ok I have to get to Dee. There is nothing left here now. He needed to call her, pay phone, batteries and gas.

The town looked deserted as he pulled out of the parking lot. He saw the most horrible sights. They were putting bodies outside. He couldn’t see how many but, it was rows and rows. My God he thought. His hands were shaking as he drove through the deserted streets.

He needed a phone, every pay phone was damaged or not working. He knew he needed gas, but the line-ups at the pumps were crazy. The people were sitting outside their cars yelling and screaming, some looked dead. Most of the stores were cleaned out. Windows were broken. The one and only police car he saw was just sitting, lights flashing and the officer looked dead on the ground. He needed to get out of here and back to the farm. Gas, he would have to have gas, maybe batteries.

He started to head out of town. It was then he saw a young woman running and two men chasing her. He pulled passed the men to her and frantically motioned to her to get in the car. She did, while the car was still moving. She was shaking, they took my car and they took everything. She started to sob. I just wanted some gas. I would have paid. Calm down Zack said. So much for that idea he thought.

Zack reached into the back seat and grabbed his mother’s shawl. Here, wrap up, it will make you feel better. Are you going to die like the others she said? It was a plea for help and he could not do anything. I have no idea and by the way I’m Zack. Hi she said, I’m Jo Ann, my friends call me Jo. Zack smiled, Jo it is. We need gas soon or we will be walking, any ideas Jo? We can try another farm she said. I just got a bad one and you are here now. Zack had to give her credit; she didn’t want to give up.

Well my folks have a farm about an hour away; at this point Im not sure what to do. There, there, let’s try that one she said and Zack pulled down the drive. This time they were lucky, it had a gas tank. He pulled up and noted money on the ground by the tank. "Hello, hello, is there anyone here?

Zack saw a small house and started towards it. That’s far enough he heard. He stopped in his tracks. I need some gas Zack said. Well, it’s over there, leave the money on the ground. Don’t come back up here or I will blow you away. No problem, no problem, I just want some gas. He back up all the way to the pump. He opened the gas cap and started to put in the gas. There wasn’t much left, but he got some, it was better than none. He took out his wallet and added his twenty to the money on the ground. Your tank is empty now Zack yelled and made his way to the driver’s seat. It didn’t take long to turn around and soon they were on the road again.

We have half a tank that will get us to my farm he said. He looked over to Jo, she seemed lost. She had red hair and he thought she was fairly tall; not all that slim, maybe she worked, he thought.

It was Jo who spoke next, Are we going to die like all the rest? Zack hadn’t really believed he was going to live, but she was right. They weren’t sick yet and enough people around them had died already. What was going on? He had to get to a phone. I don’t know Jo, I really don’t know. Thanks for saving me Jo told him. The only consolation I have for those two men is that they looked sick too. Zack thought how cold that sounded, but it was the truth down to the bone. They were considered the dregs of society. Society, what society? At the rate people were dying was there going to be a society when the smoke cleared?

Jo, how many folks did you see that were not sick? Zack asked her. Two, maybe three in the past day, that includes you Jo replied. Do you feel sick too? No, no, not at all, just maybe sick and tired of being afraid. Zack could understand that. He was afraid, terrified was more like it.

The farm was in sight and relief fell over Zack as they got closer. He pulled up the drive. I need a phone. He ran in and picked up the receiver. The line was dead. After a few moments he realized that there were no operators to connect them. My God, it has spread that far. He hung up the receiver and started rummaging through the drawers, looking for batteries.

Jo, by this time was standing in the doorway, looking, watching him. What are you looking for? Batteries, just some darn batteries he said. She lived out here with dad all this time and have no batteries. Jo could see the strain was getting to him. Sit down please, sit down Zack said. Maybe some tea or something might help and then we can look together.

Zack sat and looked out the kitchen window. He was going to go crazy, he thought. Jo, talking in the background was just there; he never heard words, just the sound of her voice. Zack wasn’t a quitter, at work, if the problem seemed too big; he always found avenues around them. He had to do that now; he had to think of a way back to Dee. It was life.

Just then he noticed mother’s chickens, they were dead too. What had they done with this virus? Had they not thought it through? They have killed off the world. Simion was right, he knew it all along. The masses were just fodder for the powerful, he thought.

Zack, Zack did you hear me? Jo said. No, what did you say? Zack replied. She stood her hands on her hips Look, we have to get something together here. It seems to me we have to think of somewhere to go. There are a lot of folks that have to be left, don’t you think? There must be somewhere they are gathering. Look Zack, we are not sick. There must be others in the same boat.

Sit down here Jo; I want to talk to you. Zack began with the story of Simion building the station. He related to her most of the things going on there. After that he began to tell her what he thought would happen next. People will be moving from the cities and will take what they want along the way. Of course, if there are any people left. There probably will be survivors as they were still alive. In my best judgement, I feel we should start making our way there. A question I have at this point is where are some stupid batteries so I can call there? She laughed and he smiled.

Ok, a systematic search is my suggestion Jo replies. Right Zack said. After searching for an hour, Zack said This is useless, there isn’t any here. Ok Jo piped up. Then we have to get some kind of survival pack going. Zack had been placing items on the table: a flashlight, a compass, several maps, a first aid kit and other things. Your powers of deduction are great Zack smiled We need some better clothes and bed rolls. Just remember what we will probably have to carry what we have. The gas is almost out in the car. Right, Oh! Jo replied. Jo was in the cupboards now looking for food, light, easy to carry and nutritious. Can goods were out, but a few to start would help.

By evening they had accumulated almost everything they might need.

Zack was studying the old road maps. He tried to remember the maps Simion had shown him. What he could remember seeing, from the plane and chopper. From here he was sure it was at least 800 miles west and 400 miles north. The mountains all looked the same. Simion’s maps were topographical, not regular ones like these. He stared for a long time, looking for what he saw on Simion’s maps that day.

Jo finally said Zack get some rest, tomorrow will be a long day. Yeah, you’re right. You rest too Jo. Then Jo said You won’t leave me, will you Zack? I, well, you won’t leave me until we get to our folks? Zack looked at her and said Jo, it’s Ok, I won’t leave you. He smiled and they settled in for the night.

Jo took his mom and dad’s room. Zack knew he had to bury his mom. He headed outside and dug her grave. He carefully placed her into the ground and cover her over. This was the end of everything he had known.

    Chapter 2

Simion had his hands full; he was in constant contact with Warren. The reports of the complex kept him sorting through the continual files on his computer. He would have to let everyone know the seriousness of the events outside.

All chose to remain after the broadcast; many feared returning to the outside. Simion knew that there was enough work to keep their minds occupied. Still he felt sorry for the ones out there.

Warren stepped in to Simion’s office and said You better come and see this.

Simion made into the next room. Simion glanced at the screens, some just static and others reporting massive deaths or pleading for help.

Warren looked at Simion Four more screens down, mean the cities are falling fast. I’m surprised we still have these few, with mass power outages everywhere out there shutting down. Simion looked at Warren They won’t last long. I fear there won’t be enough people left to operate anything. Thank you Warren and Simion returned to his desk.

Simion thought of Zack. What a shame, he should have contacted them by now. Dee would be asking about him and he had nothing to tell her. How unfair this was for her. He couldn’t even say if he was alive.

It was Rainie that appeared next, Simmy, she cooed. Simion’s patience was near its end with her. Since he closed the complex, she had pestered him continually. Rainie please, I have so much work to do. Work, work, work she was yelling. That’s all you do, you never want to have any fun.

That was it; Simion stood up, walked over and grabbed her arm. He half dragged her to the communications room, Look here he dragged her to the screens. You see that one and this one? Look at this one, Rainie, doesn’t it look like fun they are having?

Rainie looked at the pile of bodies; the panicked newsmen; the riots. She tried to look away, but Simion held her there.

He finally pulled her through his office and into the complex. He waved his arm across the room. This is it, this or that, Pick one.

She just stood and started to cry. Simion took a couple breaths and drew her into his arms. She was such a child for being such a woman. She sobbed "I’m sorry, I will be an asset
