Proverbs: “Reconstructed”
Author

Gus Dallas

There are several types of people who write books and who are qualified to do so. First, you have people who grew up with authors. Second, you have people who were educated to be creative writers. Third, you have people who were born to be writers. Author Gus Dallas does not fall into these categories; instead he is a person who hit rock bottom in life and emerged victorious through the power of God. Testimonies from these types of people are very good indicators that the Holy Spirit works miracles in people’s lives. His qualification to write books is the guidance of God. This book is not only the restructuring of the book of Proverbs; it tells the story of situations that every person faces every day. Now you can have the vital information at your fingertips every day. Dallas’s story is like any other in that it ends with a successful conclusion to the hard road he took. He lives in Joplin, Missouri, which is a culmination of many decisions. His life began its foundation in Amarillo, Texas. He lived many places in America, and he chooses to call Texas his home.

How should we read Proverbs? Unfortunately, this book doesn't help. It divorces Proverbs from its context, historically, culturally and canonically. It provides a model of how not to read Proverbs. Essentially it lists all the Proverbs under separate headings such as Abomination, Adultery, Adversity, Advocate, Anger, Answer, Anxiety, Age, Animal, Ant, Apple, Argue, Associations, Atonement, Authority - to list just the A categories. The proverbs are then sorted into these categories under good or bad sections. Such a cut and paste approach may appeal to some; but not to me. It makes Proverbs into a set of cookie promises.

Fortunately, I didn't have to spend money to get this book - I was provided with an electronic review copy. Don't waste your money buying this. If you want to know how to read Proverbs you'd be much better buying Craig Bartholomew's booklet Reading Proverbs with Integrity (Grove Books, 2001). Sadly, it is integrity that this book lacks.

 Preface

The lessons that can be learned from the Bible are some of the greatest gifts that God has given us, and all the information in the Bible is useful for reproof, instruction, etc. Yet not all the books and letters are in an instructional order, making it difficult to navigate through the blessings in store for us. Now, the book of Proverbs is re-arranged and developed in a manner for extracting the much-needed wisdom on an as-needed basis, therefore making it easy to retain the knowledge God has provided for us. The book of Proverbs is a collection of moral and philosophical sayings of a wide range of subjects presented in a poetic from, which was composed from the tenth to the fourth century BC and finally collected about 300 BC. It is probable that Solomon collected and recast many proverbs which sprang from human experience in the earlier ages that were floating past him on the tide of time, and he also authored many new ones from the material of his own experience.

The book of Proverbs sets forth the philosophy of practical life. It is the sign to us that the Bible does not despise common sense and good judgment; in fact, it impresses upon us in the most forcible manner the value of intelligence and the good sense of education. The whole strength of the Hebrew language, and of the sacred authority of the book, is thrown upon these homely truths. It deals of the finer shades of human character so often overlooked by theologians, but so necessary to any true estimate of human life.

The Bible is not confusing, but it can be somewhat intimidating when attempting to decipher it in our own eyes. When trying to claim the knowledge within the book of Proverbs, it is difficult because we use a filing method to learn. At some point in time, many have been instructed to read one Proverb a day. But that does not work. Since we absorb information in a filing system sort of way, not too many people can retain the eclectic information given in each proverb. The format is such that a person cannot learn very easily because the author deviates from topic to topic with no given direction on how to navigate through the pages. Nearly every chapter and verse is grouped with many different subjects and situations, making it very difficult to comprehend. This manuscript puts things in an order whereby a person can quickly reference the information without having to remember the chapter and verse. So, now you can absorb the information because it has been broken down into subjects and is further separated into good verses opposed to bad verses. The value for each verse is that we can learn from the verses which edify us and verses which admonish us. This makes it easy to identify the problem in our lives or just to have our insight affirmed. It is also a proactive way to seek out information from past to present.

The book of Proverbs is commonly referred to as the book of wisdom or wisdom literature. It is the most useful book to learn from for our everyday experiences, small or large, tedious or grand. The teaching power of Proverbs is our best resource in serving our everyday needs. The subject titles are related to whatever life challenges or positive words of wisdom one needs, and the verses relate solely upon the title. The alphabetical format allows for all the information to be recalled quickly and according to your individual circumstances. Pastors are encouraged to use the information as a reference tool help to prepare sermons, counseling sessions, marital ceremonies, and public forums. Parents are encouraged to use the information for themselves as well as to tutor their children as they encounter challenges and/or celebrations of life, from bullying to friendships, educational struggles to learning successes, and many other emotional encounters, all of which aid spiritual growth.

With the new age of technology, life has been put on a fast-paced speed and a right now mentality. We knew these days would come because in the last days knowledge will abound. With the assistance God provides for us, now knowledge can abound in a different way. This manuscript will aid the people of this generation to get the answers they need in their daily lives with a quick and easy way to understand their walk with God. Reconstructed is ultimately the best way to access the scriptural gifts from our heavenly Father offered in Proverbs in order to improve our lives. Before you walk the walk, you must be able to talk the talk. Thanks be to God!
