Foreword
March 10, 2000. The news of my father’s passing hit me like a ton of bricks. At the time, I wasn’t really sure why. I mean, we were not particularly close. Hadn’t I spent years mourning his absence? Looking for love in all the wrong places and coming up short?
The longings I experienced as a child as a result of his absence eventually blended into the normal everyday sorrows of life as I emerged as a young woman and I thought I had done pretty well for myself without him. But when I learned that he was gone at the age of 59…that he died of pending
causes in a rooming house alone, I was engulfed with a wave of sorrow that I was not prepared to handle. Without knowing how to reconcile what I was feeling, I tucked away the pain and continued living.
However, when I read, Epics of a Man, the familiar emotions I experienced when my father died revisited me. But this time, I wasn’t scared of being swept away by the sorrow. As I read Freddie’s dedication to his son, Joshua, I vicariously experienced what if feels like to be blessed by a father and to have that discerning father care enough to anticipate questions I would have about myself and about him and have those answers revealed in a memoir.
Through the safety of the pages, the little girl within me, who had been silent for so many years, emerged. Her tears stained the pages as she cried for moments missed and time wasted. So many questions left unanswered, like: What were your hopes for me? How did you survive Vietnam? Why did you drink? What kind of man should I marry? Did you love my mom? How come the two of you could not stay married and work things out? When you and my mother divorced, why didn’t you fight to be apart of my life? What’s the greatest
